How do you feel about aging?

I've always been curious: why do people (women especially) get upset about getting older? I'm still what I consider to be young so maybe my views will change, but I've never had an issue with birthdays and turning another year older. When my mom gets depressed about aging I think about how happy I am that she's still here another year especially after watching a close friend lose her mom. How do you feel about aging? Do you get depressed around your birthday because you are getting older?

My biggest problem with aging is simply the number of things that start to hurt that never hurt before. It gets in the way of living my life!

Ageing ... what is that? You are as young as you feel and besides it is just a number. I agree with Kacie - Women are like wine, they just get better as they age!!! It is all good!

Aging only really bothered me one year, and as stupid as it sounds it was my 25th birthday! I cried the entire weekend, but it my defense- I had just gotten divorced, was a single mom, and had to put my college plans on hold- so, I felt like a complete failure! Since then, I have met a wonderful man, have a wonderful little family, and spend every second of my birthday surrounded by them and that makes it worth it! I guess I have learned to embrace the fact that we all get older (it beats the alternative!), because I have 2 great-grandmother's still living (one of whom turned 100 this year), so I am in for the long haul!

@ Meagon
You can use this information to help you. You know what to watch out for. Don't waste this information. My husbands dad died the same way John Ritter did so it was herititary (sp?). My husband had his heart checked out at 46 and he had the condition. He went through heart surgery that saved his life. If it had not been for his dad, he would have never thought about it until I may have been too late. Keep doing all the right things like your doing. You will be fine.

That's true. My mum was 51, bald and three parts dead from leukemia in the last photo taken of her (about 2 months before she died). She looks haggard, but only about 40... and that was because she was end of the road cancer. I'm hoping to age half as well as she did.

Those are about the only good genes I inherited!

Well thanks! I'm actually 41 1/2. lol It's my mother's Japanese genes. I've only got about ten grey hairs that I pull out with tweezers and not many wrinkles. I was 35 when Dale and I were dating. When I met his family and a few family friends, they all thought I was the same age as his sister (26) and commented that it was nice he found a girl his age... He was 24 at the time.

Maybe I've never really been fussed about aging because I age relatively well. Never thought of that before.

Elizabeth, I'm 41 (42 the end of the year) and married to someone 11 years my junior as well! Thankfully, calculating my age is easy. The last number in the year is the last number of my age, and then I just have to remember gow many decades it is. 2011 = 41 Being born in December has finally had an advantage! lol

I do think associating with younger people keeps you younger too. You're only as old as the man you're feeling, as they say!

I am now 40. Once I had hit the magic age of 21, birthdays stopped being about getting older and started being about myself, family and friends saying so many years ago Elizabeth was born and we are so glad she was. Let's celebrate. My 21 year old grandma celebrates the anniversary of her 21st birthday. She was born 88 years ago.

As to my white hairs which are growing in number daily, I wear them proudly. I earned every d*** one of them :)

I don't even think about my age and often times when I'm asked, I have to actually think for a few minutes "okay the year is 2011 and I was born in 70 it's before August so that would make me 40" I don't feel a certain age. I just feel like me. Sometimes me feels pretty old physically though.

I do hang associate mostly with younger people (my hubby is 11 years younger than I am.) It doesn't bother me when they try to harass me about my age or complain about how they are getting old. I use the difference to my advantage. "You need to respect your elders." Or "Listen to the wisdom of the old." My favorite is when there aren't enough chairs for everyone and I make someone give up their chair to their elder.

I don't want to age because I'm afraid of what waits for me. My mom has major medical problems, a lot of which are hereditary, and although I am doing a lot to prevent them, my mom got really sick early in her 40's and had a major heart attack that nearly killed her at 42. My grandmother died early in her 50's. So, aging scares. It seems that the medical problems start in the late 30's, early 40's, and although thats a distant future, every year it gets closer. I'm not afraid of dying. I am afraid of suffering before I do.

Like I said, I do a ton of preventative stuff and visit doctors regularly for check ups because of my paranoia, but that is why I don't like aging.

Sherri, I get ya. I did my ankles as a kid (went through a period of breaking alternating ankles every other year for a total of 4 broken ankles, starting from age 8).

Oh my, you're so right about dressing different as you get older. I've seen the "mutton disguised as lamb" look and it's just horrifying. Since I'm a jeans and t-shirt type, I hadn't thought of that either.

I saw another example of aging the other day. There comes a time when a woman shouldn't wear a teeny tiny bikini, even if she is thin. There was this woman who is probably a grandma (maybe 60s) wearing a bikini at the beach. Her saggy leather bag looking skin looked awful and the triangle top wasn't helping lift her sagging boobs. She's obviously been a beach bunny all her life, but I think she needs to find a more appropriate swimsuit. She could still wear a bikini, just not those little triangle ones.

I just want to finish my nursing it so I feel like I've done something with my life and don't owe the government money for a degree I don't have. I have my cert 3 in aged care so it's not worth it to go back to aged care and pay more for daycare than I'd made. I've been thinking about doing drug testing or something or phlebotomy just to do something interesting a few days a week rather than housework and being driven mad by kids all day.

Just certainly things that are appropriate for teens and early 20's to do, wear etc. that just isn't okay anymore for a 30 yr old something, mother, wife etc.

Plus after a severe injury to my ankle that will never be the same the rest of my life. I will never be able to play volleyball, kick ball, baseball any sort of running on uneven surfaces. It has a lot to do with my body not going to able to repair itself as well because I am older vs. if the injury happened at a much younger age.

Jodi, why do I find that hard to believe? lol If it's any consolation, I'm going to be doing my second semester at the age of 42 (end of this year). I think we're just keeping ourselves young! :-)

Emma, you don't have to finish uni to start working you know. I didn't end up finishing in my early 20s because it was too expensive (in the US). I had taken a year off to make some money and ended up not going back until a decade later. The job I started to pay for uni ended up being a 9 year career and I was making a six figure salary by the time I was 24... without a degree. If I can do it, anyone can!

The degree should be for you. Making money can be done with or without a degree.

Nothing wrong with being a mature aged student hahaha I just want to get uni over with before I turn 30 and make my own money instead of just staying home wishing I'd finished before the kids. Just some of these were really annoying especially the fighting with the lecturer and other students about anything and everything.

Thanks Emma! I know I'm old. :-P Remember, I enroled into uni a few weeks ago... and I'm 41. Having said that, I remember when I was in uni at age 19 and one of my classmates was a 67 year old granny. She rocked!

Loureen, I couldn't do the splits when I was 9!

Sara, with my second pregnancy, I stood in one spot too long and passed out, cracked a rib from coughing too hard and strained my back picking up my then toddler the "wrong way". Pregnancy does weird things to a body!

I think pregnancy is a preview into getting older. I pulled a muscle in my chest today just by bending over and dusting something (and apparently standing up too fast). I could hardly breathe for quite some time. I'm sore and slow and can't get around very easily. Maybe I won't like this aging thing...lol.

Sherri, what kind of things can't you do now that you could when you were younger? I can't think of anything I can't do now that I couldn't do then off the top of my head. Well, I can't put my foot behind my head any more, but that's about it. Hmm, I'll have to think about this.

Age never bothered me and still doesn't, but when I turned 35 I had a little freak out. That lasted a couple days and then it was back to normal. Then, I turned 40. About a month before my 40th birthday I was upset and for a couple weeks after my birthday I mourned "being old". Then I got over it. I don't know why I had these episodes and they just seemed to come out of the blue. I suppose it has to do with the realization of my own mortality.

Overall, I'm now 41 and it doesn't matter. It never mattered, except for those few weeks. Our age shouldn't matter as long as we are taking care of ourselves and having fun with our kids. I believe in making the most out of the time I do have, not worrying about when that time is going to end.

I have been just trying to sleep it off, but it isn't working very well. kids are good though. I won't know if my nephews will be promoted but everyone else has been. How are you doing?
