Just out of curiosity - towels or tampons?

I've always been a towels girl myself. I've never been comfortable or confident with tampons but know some people swear by them.

Hey while we're being personal why not go the whole hog - what's your prefered method of birth control right now?

I am on the pill which makes the period light, too light i feel for a tampon, i have trouble with comfort when i have a tampon in, it just never seems to go right, and ive had two kids so yeh. I dunno as long as u use a non plastic based pad or towel i really dont have a prob with towels, in summer ive often used tampons so i could swim or because of a case of thrush that may be worse with a towel

Well I guess I'm having an abortion every month and loving every second of it because i absolutely love my iud! Anyways that was an ignorant comment way off the subject.

I don't know if I could ever use a diva cup. Seems kinda nasty to me...just couldn't imagine cleaning it out I hate pulling tampons out and i hate pads too which its why i don't like having a period at all.

Lately I've been using pads more, but for most of the time I use tampons.

Right now we aren't using anything (TTC). Otherwise it is NFP. I don't like the idea of hormonal, I'm highly against IUDs (basically abortion sticks), and hubby is highly allergic to latex.

To answer bothof your questions at once;Nothing!! Goodnessthat sounds smug ,but I was bleeding so heavily after trying a heap of different pills my doctor suggested a mirena. Its a tiny wee thing that has a small dose of hormones and is inserted into your uterus. it lasts 5 years , is as effective as a tubal and after 6months no periods for me ( this happens to 50% of women using it i'm told) Before i had the heavy bleeding i liked the tampons with the applicator thingy. It was less uncomfortable and just felt cleaner to me

I usually wear both at the same time as I'm paranoid about my tampon leaking. I started using pads first at age 13 and used tampons from age 14.

As for birth control I have the implanon implant which has been great so far and when it's finished we plan on tyring for our second and last child =] I was recommended to have the implanon because when I came off the pill my periods didn't return in the time we were trying for a baby. I'd been on it since age 13 for my PCOS.

I wear tampons overnight. No TSS here in the past 12 years. ;/

I agree, Christina! I don't usually wear tampons overnight because my period isn't that heavy, but I have before when I was younger. You just don't want to leave them in too long and I'm a frequent pee-er lol so I use the bathroom once a night usually. I started out with pads then switched to tampons as a teen. I've never heard of this diva cup. I will have to look into that.

Birth control I use NFP (natural family planning). I've been on the pill and I've tried nuvaring and I hate the way hormonal birth control makes me feel. I have PCOS, but it seems that a pregnancy has helped my body regulate which makes me very happy. Before my pregnancy if I wasn't on the pill I had to take Metformin to regulate the hormones, but so far I'm doing well on my own.

Had a long conversation with my sis on the phone yesterday about the diva/moon cup - she at least had heard it before and has been thinking of getting for a while she just hasn't known anyone who had used it and was a little wary. But I told her of all the women on here who are using it no problems so think we are both going to buy it - thanks ladies!

That's not true, Amy. You can wear tampons overnight! You just can't leave them in longer than 8 hours at a time. I've never heard anyone say that was the reason to not wear them..

Amy - posted on 04/07/2010

For my period I use neither. Tampons freak me out and you can't wear them overnight due to TSS, and pads feel like your wearing a diaper. I use a Menstrual cup, a DivaCup to be exact and it's the best thing that ever happened to me! I bought one for like 30 dollars or something and never have to buy another nasty product again (well except for the first 6 months after giving birth). It's also the "green" way to go, It's super comfortable, and I haven't had a bloody underwear in ages! WHOOT!

As for birth control I prefer the pill, I like to take it everyday and know I've taken it. I have, however, started to look at different options for after I deliver my baby to get me buy till we do something more deffinate, like Essure.

I started with pads (towels?) when young, then switched to tampons in my teens, then back to pads after children. Tampons wouldnt stay up anymore and were uncomfortable lol

The pads they make today are so thin and discreet I dont even know Im wearing them half the time.

As to birth control, my preferred was the withdrawel method cause I hated the pill, but now my hubby has had the snip so we are all safe! lol

As for birth control, being pregnant is control enough lol. when I am not preggers and not looking to be preganant we use condoms... b/c I refuse to take B/C until I am done having kids but even then my boyfriend will get a vascetomy

Tried to use tampons a few times during my life but couldn't do it. Trying to insert them makes me squeamish so I have always used pads. Yes it might be a little messier but as someone mentioned tampons are unhealthy to put up there. This might be TMI but I actually like when I can feel my menses coming out because it helps me to know how much longer my period will last. You can't get that with tampons. I am actually looking into washable cloth pads which are environmentally friendly.

Depends on the flow, sometimes both, usually tampons, at the end a pad.

Getting my husband snipped and considering an IUD also. If I so much as sneeze with him in the room, we could end up expecting.

I started out with pads, moved onto tampons when I got the hang of them and then after having Gracie, I have only had a couple light periods since then, because I am BF'ing so I used pads.

For birthcontrol, I started out with just condoms. Turns out I am incredibly allergic to most kinds so we tried the pull-out method, but the first time we tried that, I go pregnant with Gracie. Apparently I am very fertile. :P

After Gracie I was put on Micronor, the progesterin only pill but I just stopped taking it because I have a feeling that I may be pregnant anyway... I'll start taking it again if it turns out I am not.

As for the brand I use... whatever is on sale. :P Usually that means Tampax and Always.

I go half and half - on my REALLY bad days I wear a pad - but the rest of the time tampons. I keep both in my purse at all times.

I got my tubes tied when I was married - but looking into reversal as my fiancee would like to have more children

Like you all care, but other people are doing it, so I am too :)

TAMPAX Pearl for tampons, Stayfree Ultra Thin (w/ wings) for tampon backup and Always scented Dry-Weave liners for everyday use (they have a cottony-dry cover that keeps you feeling fabulous :)

I'm a tampon girl but I'm thinking of trying the Mooncup (same thing as diva cup I suppose) I've used tampons since I was about 17.

I hate the messiness of pads, they're horrible, but I do use them at night when I have heavy bleeding.

As for birth control, my hubby had the snip a few months ago!!!! I was on depo provera to cover us for the mean time. No more bubbas here :-(

When I get my flow back once breastfeeding lessens, I will be using a Diva Cup.

As for birth control: Although breastfeeding has kept me from ovulating thus far, my husband had a vasectomy, as well.

I used to use tampons...but ever since my son was born, I have used pads. I tried the mega tampons (since my flow has increased quite a bit) and hate them. The last time I used one, I went to a wedding and wore a dress that would have easily shown my boyshort undies, so I used a tampon with a thong...which I haven't worn since, haha!
Preferred birth control was the pill. I have to take a prescription everyday anyways (for epilepsy) so I had no problem taking them. After this baby is born, I am going to look into an IUD of some sort. I want the Implanon, but my OB doesn't have those, so we will see. I hate condoms...even with a lubricant, I get so dried out. It gets annoying to have to stop a few times to "re-lube", so we don't use them. No complaints from my husband for stopping those! :D

I was a little nervous starting this thread thinking people might say "I'm not bloody telling her that!" but am so pleased you've all shared, thanks guys.

@Christina I'm going to get my tubes tied - hopefully. They already turned me down once saying I was too young but I'm not giving up and have another appointment for next month.

I've never heard od the diva cup either but am so going to look into whether or not you can get it in the UK - it sounds great and I love the thought of no pads or tampons filling up the trash.

And I'm really pleased to hear there are so many others using the rythme/ pull out method/ condoms. I thought we were the only people who didn't use birth control 100% of the time. Just be warned though we've ended up with 4 kids because of it lol!!!
Not chancing it right now though because I deffinetly couldn't handle a fifth!

As for me I've always used Tampons... Tampax Pearl to be specific. (TMI)

Also on the Mirena for about a year now and don't really have to wear anything. Oddly enough I have a Doctors appt today to talk about getting it removed. NOT looking foward to the monthly visitor coming back into town!

well....I use tampons for the first 2 days of my period. Then I use pads/pantyliners because I literally only spot for maybe 2 or 3 days after and tampons were just too uncomfortable.

Birth control....hmmmm well when I was younger it was first the pill, I'm not good at remembering to take it. Then I did the shot, I gained like 20 lbs and it dropped my sex drive down to ZERO! My grandmother died after this and we found out that she died because of a blood clot, and my sister got diagnosed with having blood clots so with a family history of them I stopped all hormones. So then I just used condoms. When I got married the first time we stopped ALL BC...got pregnant 3 times and had 2 miscarriages. Still didn't use birth control in ANY form...and didn't get pregnant again. Divorced, I used condoms...then I started dating my current hubby...the one time the condom broke on us (we were in Iraq and NOT trying to get pregnant at all) I get pregnant...after I had the baby I still didn't go on BC and of course 2 1/2 months after giving birth I got pregnant again. So right now the fact that I am pregnant is our BC...after the baby is born he WILL use condoms until I can get an IUD put in.

They have regular condoms that are latex-free that aren't made out of lambskin. Lambskin condoms are only effective for preventing pregnancy, not STDs (for those of you who aren't married or in a lifelong commitment with someone).

I started using tampons once I became sexually active. They're great, but I like the idea of Diva Cups... maybe I'll look into them.

As far as birth control... after my daughter was born, I went on the mini pill, until she was about 13 months old. Now she is 15 months old, and we only use condoms. But we use the lambskin condoms, because latex gives me yeast infections.

I've researched the Diva Cup before.. Not sure if that's something I want to try. I'd rather flush a tampon down the toilet instead of washing something out. Takes less time. Maybe when my son is a little older it wouldn't be so bad. But for now, not sure.

@Gillian.. Yeah, my cousins were the same way. Both of them had to quit taking birth control in any form. But my husband and I use the condoms with spermicide. Like I said, I hope it works for a while. It would be ideal for us to wait to have anymore kids until after we PCS, which could be a year from now, maybe a little longer. Are you going to get your tubes tied or just get your eggs removed?

Ok ladies, the Diva Cup is a soft silicone cup (kinda looks like an rounded upside down ice cream cone) that you use just like a tampon. You squeeze it a little to get it in and then it expands, but you don't really feel it because it is so flexible. It has a little stem on it that you use to pull it out, and you just tip the contents into the toilet. You can keep it in for 12 hours, and it is wonderful for over nights!
@ Lisa, you could use it for a light flow, I used mine right after I had my Mirena put it, and I was just barely spotting. I get a bit of a reaction to all pads so I couldn't wear a pantie liner for longer than a day. But really if it is that light I don't think I would worry about it. You could also try light fabric pads.
@ LaCi You only insert the cup a few inches, a tampon goes up much higher. The cup itself is only about 2.5 inches (and you can trim the stem)
Here is the site for it; but you can probably find them locally. I found some for sale in a tea shop of all places lol

So for those of you who wear the Diva cup- would it be worth it for someone who has an incredibly light flow? I only use panty liners and my period usually lasts only three days.

We were using ecological breastfeeding for our birth control up until just this month since I got my period back after 17months of nursing woo!. Now we're using condoms.
