I am letting my daughter go to California with my in laws for a week this summer to finally meet her great grandma and her great aunt who to this point have only seen pictures of her (she's 21 months) I'm not concerned with letting her go with them because we lived with them for the year or so of her life and they watch her while I'm in school (I'm a full time college student). What I would like to know is what should I be sure to send with her besides the obvious of clothes, a few toys, swimsuit, and floaties?

a picture of you, a favorite stuffed animal or blanket. something that specifically reminds her of home.

will she be travelling by car or plane? if she is travelling by plane, she may need a special pillow or ear plugs for lift off.

I would also sleep in a shirt for a couple nights and throw that in, just in case she gets home sick and misses you.

Don't forget suscreen! It's amazing to me how many people without kids don't have it. Oh! Don't forget baby medicines and to write down the proper dosage- again, most adults don't have infant tylenol on hand :)
I used to go to CA every summer with my grandparents, what a wonderful time I had! I remember my dad alwasy let me use his Polaroid camera to take pics on the journey and while there- it's just point and click, so it was super easy. Now as an adult I can look back at the things I found important during those summers LOL!

They are driving from Dallas, Texas to Fresno, California. So far everyone has thought of things I haven't thank you.

Are they flying or driving? If they are driving, a portable DVD player might be a life saver for them. Also, a neck pillow for the trip there. Pictures of you, in case she starts to miss you. It can help to calm her.

I wouldn't worry about packing tons of clothes. If she's with the in-laws, a washer/dryer will be available. That should save room in the suitcase. Also, I would only pack enough diapers and wipes for the journey. Send money for them to buy her diapers while she's there. Again, saves room. Maybe write down her routine and favorite foods, just to help them out. My MIL is always grateful when I let her know routine and food preference changes. Pack a sippie cup or bottle, whichever you use. If she has a lovey, make sure to pack that as well. Anything you forget, they can get at the store.

Either way if it's a long distance a few new toys for her to play with on the way would be nice (don't let her see them till she's in the car and getting a little fussy). Also, if she doesn't have a container for food/snacks for traveling that can help a lot as well. Our son has one where he can put his hands in to get the food out but if he tips it upside down the food stays in. This was very nice for us on trips.
