A man in San Fran is donating his sperm for free to couples who can't afford traditional IVF. He's in trouble for doing so because the government thinks it's a business even though no money is changing hands. Both and he the couple using his sperm know what's going on.

How is this different than him having sex and getting people pregnant? It seems way more responsible to me because in this case the baby is wanted and he is helping couples get pregnant. Thoughts on this? Should the government regulate stuff like this? If they do then shouldn't they just go ahead and regulate who/how we have sex? Would you except a sperm donation like this if you couldn't get pregnant and couldn't afford other feritility options?

I get your point. I'm just saying the same thing could happen from one night stands.

No you can't regulate sex.
The way I see it, if your going to have sex and you don't want to get pregnant- use a condom or don't have sex at all.

Well how would you feel if say for example your bio parents adopted you out. You fall in love with a guy and start a family with him then you decide to trace your roots and find out that your partner is either your brother or cousin- these things happen. That's why sperm and egg donations are regulated so these types of situations don't happen.

It's not just men who are at fault when, for example, a one night stands happen and the woman falls pregnant. How is she going to approach the subject when her child(ren) get older and they find out that their Mother doesn't know who their father is because their Mother had unprotected sex with a man who happens to be their father? Or it could be a family friend she falls pregnant to and they don't get along because she chose to go through with the pregnancy, then she decides he is a unfit father and prevents him from seeing his child (if he is then fair enough but their is a sterio type out there when people find out if a woman is a solo parent)? That's the other thing that really pisses me off. When you've got Solo mother's who are not getting along with their children's father- they refer to them as a sperm donor. A sperm donor is a man who goes to a clinic and donates his sperm- you purchase it and use his sperm to get pregnant! Sperm donor's aren't free!

Then shouldn't having sex be regulated (if you're worried about long lost siblings falling in love)? There are plenty of people who sleep around and father tons of children with multiple partners, but don't keep in touch with them. Some mothers don't even know who the father of their children are. Where do you draw the line?

I forgot to add, some countries don't pay the donor for their donations.

There is a reason why it HAS to be regulated!
You don't have to go through IVF clinics to get pregnant. If your using a Sperm or Egg donor then you can get some thing written up by Laywers/Attorney's to cover you legally.

The other reason why it has to be regulated so that the offspring (that is what they are called) don't end up meeting each other and having a sexual relationship that can result in them having children together.
Also clinics screen donor's and both parties have to have counselling.
There is a huge process involved. Donor's have to have blood tests etc to make sure that they are not passing down any diseases etc.

Because there is a chance that two people conceived using the same sperm/egg donor, there is usually a limit to how many times they can donate. Also each donor has a code that identifies them so when a offspring comes looking then they can match.
This is another reason why parents should tell their children that they had 'special people' help them to have children.

Good point Brianna. I personally don't care. If they want to regulate it and force this couple to make sure they aren't related by bloodwork, fine. But I see at as not much of a big deal. Like the Sara D. said, same as just getting someone pregnant.

i would not feel comftorable just taking a random donation,im not a expert, but how do i know for sure that this donor doesnt have HIV, at least the traditional way that sort of thing is screened.

i dont think its just because of money.. Fertility doctors keep track of who is the father of who so that parents can find out about other siblings so that there is no incest happening. i read that in many other countrys sperm doners are only allowed to father 10 kids so try to avoid the chance that there could be incest between his unknowning kids down the line..
