I think that this kind of thing is what makes people think it's okay to live however they want with no thought to the consequences of their actions.

Oh, and just to add -- it IS okay to live life however you want, as long as you are not hurting anybody else or yourself. Why should it not be okay for a grown woman to have sex with whoever she damn well pleases, as long as she is protecting herself and her partner?

Abstinence is not a realistic view. I have 2 kids should I be abstinent the rest of my life in case I get pregnant because I don't want anymore kids.

Seriously -- I've heard this argument before so often from people who are conservative. They really seem to be offended by the thought of an unmarried woman having sex without any consequences arising from it. And I just don't get it. Is it a religious thing? Do you think that they're immoral? What is the problem?

College students are grown woman. Why should their having sex have to have "consequences"?

Ohh jeeeeeeeez.....people aren't going to rush out and have sex just because the products are made available. It's like condom machines. People are going to have sex.....I'd rather they be protected.

Cold meds can be very hard to get here, as are some alleregy meds, due to Meth manufacturing. I have to show an I.D. at the pharmacy. My name and number of packages I buy is written down and sent to the sheriff's data base and cross checked with state wide logs. But it has NOTHING to do with my personal safety(or my daughters-she's the one who takes them!) If I have a question about any meds I am given I have to ask, then wait around to talk to the pharmisist. Easier for me to look it up on-line!! Plan-B is probably about the same, handed over no questions asked, unless the pharmacy has a personal interest. Or maybe a tech knows the girls mom......

As I said Jen, maybe YOU have seen it in vending machines, but not here. Our restrictions must be much tighter. And I have no issue with that.

"I see Plan B as requiring similar restrictions. It's not hard to get it, it just means the pharmacists can point out the warnings, and check that you are aware of them."

Pharmacists can also at that point refuse to dispense it because of their religious beliefs, thus imposing their beliefs on you.

I've seen it in vending machines Jodi. You can also buy packets of cold medicine at gas stations next to the condoms and energy drinks.

As I said, you can't get medicines from vending machines here, and MANY medicines are only available by going to the pharmacy counter, including cough syrups and cold medicines. I see Plan B as requiring similar restrictions. It's not hard to get it, it just means the pharmacists can point out the warnings, and check that you are aware of them. Oh, and with many cold meds, we have to provide ID to get them, and you can't buy them in bulk. They are heavily monitored because of their link to illegal drug manufacture. Personally, I don't have an issue with it.

What kind of cold meds are we talking about? Cuz stuff like sudafed and DayQuil etc can all be bought at a Walmart or a gas station. No pharmacist present.

Here you can buy tylenol from a vending machine. They had it in our school in the 90's and I've seen it on the ferry recently. Tylenol has plenty of potential side effects. We can also buy many cold medicines in the convenience store. So to me, plan B out of a vending machine doesn't seem that risky.

Cold medicines aren't available in vending machines, and where I live, you also can't get those without going to a pharmacy either.

Jen - posted on 02/16/2012

But Jodi, people with high blood pressure shouldn't take most cold medicines that you can purchase without even going to the pharmacy window. They are in more danger than someone buying this pill.

Well I hadn't thought of that.

Good point!

I actually have a problem with this because these medications have side effects, and there are some people who shouldn't take them. At least with them available over the counter at a pharmacy, generally a pharmacist will go through a checklist of side effect with you, and give you advice on when to see a doctor if necessary, etc. There are also certain people who need to consult a healthcare provider before taking it (such as those with diabetes, on other medications, etc.). I just think people would be more likely to ignore these warnings if they are purchasing from a vending machine.

A large majority of girls are now 19 when they get out of HS, almost all are 18. I'm sure a boy could buy it for his younger gf, or a girl can buy it for a friend, but it is not hard to get now. A visit to a clinic will usually be all it takes. Any female can lie and get it for anyone they want. It isn't like they can do a pregnancy test!

The ONLY thing a clinic has the advantage in is STD testing, and those take repeat appointments that are normally not followed through with!

Can't teens get abortions without parental knowledge anyways?

Deborah - posted on 02/14/2012

I think it's a great idea. Since Plan B cannot terminate an existing pregnancy, there really isn't any ethical guidelines to taking it, not in my opinion. Besides, a lot of stuff happens on a college campus, and girls should have the option. I know a lot of colleges have an open policy with parents, so using a vending machine instead of the clinic is a good idea. College students are adults, and don't have to answer to their parents for their actions.

In my opinion it is no different than birth control. Just because you take it after intercourse doesn't really make a difference in the ethical implications. College campuses are likely the top place where "What did I do THAT for?" questions happen more often than other places. Those kids are there to get an education. Speaking from experience, having children before you graduate college is a monumental challenge to overcome. Having the option of a 'day after birth control' pill is a spectacular idea.

IF they're worried about underage access, all they would have to do is install a scanner where they have to scan their college ID or license before the product will be dispensed. That way, even if someone underage does get access, at least someone else knows about them taking it.

I think its a good idea. even for teens. teens can buy condoms at any age. so why not PlanB.

Teens should totally have access to these machines. Who needs a teen pregnancy because you accidentally forgot to use a condom/were raped by someone who didn't use a condom? There are a lot of things at a pharmacy/supermrket that don't need a prescription that can be harmful if taken together or too much of.

Jasmine - posted on 02/12/2012

Well I know it's available without a prescription for women over 17, but how do they know that girls under 17 are finding these machines and getting the pill? Not that I don't think teenage girls shouldn't have access but i"m just curious abou the logistics

You're more likely to get sick from taking too much tylenol than the plan B. it can't be said enough that it is not the abortion pill, it cannot cannot cannot terminate a pregnancy.

I am not very familiar with Plan B. Are there any contraindications? All drugs have side effects. I imagine that if you are a girl who is desperate you won't necessarily be looking at this with a critical eye but pharmaceuticals generally require a certain amount of caution. That is why there are pharmacies and doctors. I do not have a problem with acetaminophen dispensed this way so it's not as though I have a hard fast rule about this but neither am I quick to say 'easy access, great idea.' These are drugs.

I love this! This is amazing!

I would like to see traditional BC pills in there too, but this is a wonderful start. No holier than thou pharmacists refusing to give it to you for "moral" reasons, no judgements, just access to what you need. Awesome. ♥

Uh no. Medicactions shouldn't be given out like candy. I don't care what it is for. That is just asking for abuse. It is plain stupidity.

Plan B is not different then the regular pill in how it works.

It will prevent implantation or kill sperm, or prevent ovulation etc just like the pill.

If you're already pregnant it won't abort the child.

Woopse I thought it was a high school!

Well if they're over 18 then what's the controversy!

Sure my kids will hopefully go to college and if they need a plan b pill I'd be fine with them using it.

Laura, you won't be allowing your kids to go to college? This isn't a public school.

Well since my kids wont be going to schools I say I'm all for it!

I still am holing out for abstinence for my kids but fact is mot teens are sexually active so I think this is a good idea to prevent unplanned pregnancies.

It not help them protect against stds but its something!

I don't like it. I just don't.

But, I don't think it will encourage a girl that doesn't want it. It will make it easier for girls who do want it, but most would get it one way or another. I think Plan B is safer than a traditional abortion, and so I would prefer it. I would not picket against it or whatever.

I wish they would put traditional BC in there, though, at least in addition to. I know several girls who would use it. It can be gotten for free at many clinics, but just like plan b, the girls are too worried about the exams or stigma to go get it.

Great idea. It will allow the women to access it safely, without feeling that they are being judged, and in a timely fashion. Might even bring down the abortion rate.
