My 3 year old isn't embarrassed because she's always nursed. It's normal for her. If someone said something that tried to make her feel shameful they would no longer see me or my child. All of my family has been very supportive.

Most third worl countries breastfeed into the toddler years at leat 2years. This, as American media is, is extreme. It's meant to get your atten tion. NO most mothers don't breastfeed that long but apparently a few do. To me, it's not about what the kid wants but what is good for the child. Mothers'' milk is not necessary once the child is eating solids completely. That does not mean the child does not get the bondind benefits. WHy would a childe so old need to bond in such a way? That is up to the mother and child. I will stop breastfeeding at one year. I have determined that. Not all mother's have given such a deadline. It is up to the mother and child. AFter a certain age, though, one must wonder why the child feels the need. AT 3 my son was already independant and didn't want to be seen as a baby. SUrely if breastfeeding at 3 got out he would be decimated publically. WOuld he? What is the age that children would be embarassed? and why? Tht is the more interesting point. If the child still feels comfortable about it and so does the mother, who's to say what is wrong? I would feel uncomfortable but others may not.

People can do whatever they want but honestly do we really need it splashed all over the place so we are literally slapped in the face with it. Like every mom who doesn't breastfeed at least until their children are toddlers has done something wrong. UGH!!

I am fine with the photo. The caption is lame, but it is meant to stir the pot. If you read the photographers notes in the mag, the funny pose makes a lot more sense. Mothering doesn't have just one position. The rest of life just moves right along- breastfeeding doesn't cause a time warp. What irked me was the spin on the Dr.Sears article. It did nothing to capture the true essence of intuitive mothering. The other photos were very good.

I hate the title (Mom Enough?), that the kid is made out to look like he's 10 years old, and that the mom is standing like she's better than everyone else. It's obvious the photo was taken to create controversy-- and all it will do is make nursing moms look bad, AGAIN. I really think a picture of the mom nursing her 3 year old in his PJs, holding his blankie, would have been much more inline with the attached parenting philosophy (that she's trying to promote).

I think people can do whatever they want to do. I just don't think it needs to be splashed all over the place....especially when the caption "Are You Mom Enough?" implies that I need to breastfeed my son for 15 yrs or I'm not a good mom. RIDICULOUS. I BF my son until he was almost 2...I got a lot of grief for it, & finally stopped because it was A) Ruining my boobs (lol), & B) He was getting too "self-aware" & smart for me to be comfortable with it. He is now almost 6 & I cannot IMAGINE nursing him now. He's bright, funny, & I don't think I would feel comfortable having him read a book out loud to me & then nursing >.< CREEPY.
To each their own. I'm just a little tired of the fanatics, on either side of the issue.

I don't, personally, have a problem with the picture, but I do have a problem with the caption and the fact that this will do nothing to help promote tolerance and understanding towards extended breastfeeding or breastfeeding at all.

I think it's great. It would be awesome if our culture started putting children's needs ahead of parent's wants instead of the other way around. I also think it would be great if more people realized what boobs were really designed for--(Hint--it's NOT selling cars and beer).
