TLC's new reality show: Polygamist Family "Sister Wives"
MOST HELPFUL POSTS
They're not sisters. They just call themselves 'Sister wives'. Polygamy is not for me but I'm not really sure why it's illegal. As long as it's consensual, not abusive and the marriages would have been legal otherwise (ie not family members and no child brides), I don't see the problem.

"Do they let their children watch?"
Uh, do you let your children watch you have sex with your spouse? I get that this is a new family dynamic but let's not go crazy and think that they are sexually inappropriate with their children...that's just silly.

I've been watching it. I really liked it. The new fiancee is in a house that is one block away from the big house that they all live in.
And initially the 3 wives weren't thrilled with the new woman, but in the interviews they did this week they said it was because she was living 5 hours away so he would be gone for several days to visit her. Now that she is living on the same block only one is having jealousy issues.
I agree that all the children seem wonderful. They are well adjusted and call all of the women mom and are comforable with their entire family.
I personally don't believe that multiple marraiges should be illegal as long as it is between consenting adults.
Utah's Attorney General is quoted as saying, "one of the reason for not prosecuting polygamy in Utah, is the lack of funding and resources from legal expenses to finding placement homes for the wives and children while they sort out if there are victims."

Anika, I agree - I think it's silly that polygamy is illegal. Esp when it's consensual.
But I'm wondering if the argument against it is kind of like prostitution in that it's something that generally affects disadvantaged women, and therefore, is a form of persecution.
edited to add: Sorry, I've seen it. When I read my last post it seems like I haven't. I was excited to find out if anyone else was watching lol.
I know! It was so interesting. Especially the way their house was set up. They do seem like a nice family. The one thing I noticed is that they are very supportive of their children and whatever they decide to do (the polygamy lifestyle or not). I have it on onDemand so I'm hooked.

ok...so they all have "apartments" within one huge house. He is currently "courting" a fourth wife...and none of the present wives seem too happy about it. The kids seem lovely, two of the mothers work (I think) and the third is a student, one of the oldest daughters has already come out and said NEVER! (to polygamy)
I liked it.

Maybe they will give this guy a show:
Winston Blackmore, head of Canada's largest polygamist group, has an estimated 25 wives plus 121 children. And despite criticism of plural marriages, the group says polygamy is as moral a lifestyle as any other, which it's determined to prove to the world.
121 kids thats just crazy.
For the records morons believe that if they live a polygamist life they will be kings and queens in the after life.

I agree that it is totally bizarre to have a reality show about an illegal situation. Perhaps not all of the marriages are legal or something like that.
I know that in some countries/cultures it is normal to have several wives. The men are expected to have several wives because that is there way of contributing to society (feeding and clothing as many as they can). I think the women like it because you've got live in girlfriends. But nonetheless it all seems so twisted and it makes me angry that this guy just keeps going off and finding more wives! Don't think I could watch the show.

About the thread though and this show. TLC has lost me when they went into the reality show realm. when Jon and Kate + 8 wasn't enough they had to have more with 19 and counting to top that.. and now they have to have sister wives so now they can have 19 and counting sister wives + 50 kids.
On a personal level, being raised with only brothers i understand men view sex like a basketball game. there isn't any emotion or intimacy unless it's needed by the offense to get through the defense. So i'm not jealous if my husband were to have sex with other women, matter of fact, it would give me a break once in a while. Plus i'd have help with cooking, cleaning, gardening, i might have time for a project, it could bring more money into the household and we could put back retirement.. i could finally have a sister!!! My husband would have more to worry about being jealous of me and her than me of him and her.

Yea she is a bit untidy, and pretty lenient with them... but they're all pretty good kids (slightly lazy teenage boys can be typical). She is really remarkable for everything she does... the last marathon showed the whole LP Olympics thing... I bet Kate would have just ditched. Amy made it happen and won medals in the Olympics too. I'm just impressed with her lol she's a pretty cool human being - imo :p
anywaysssssssss........ wayyyyyy off topic ! Sorry !

Ya, Jo, I totally hear ya on that. TLC used to be one of my fav channels to sit back and watch, but now I rarely ever tune into it. Although I do like "Quints by surprise" and "table for 12", but havn't seen that one on in a while. Just such a refreshing show after watching the "Jon and Kate" train wreak. But most of TLC's shows are just repeats after repeats, even their decorating shows are all from `05 or `06. Blah! Rather watch the Food network.

i cant wait to watch it. im curious how there going to get into the religious part of it as the reason they take more then one wife is because they need more then one to go to the celestial kingdom there heaven to become kings and queens often this is sold to the wives that the better they are to there sister wives not normaly acualy sisters the better they will do in heaven. There also is a ton of child abuse involved with pilogomy because of how underground it is it should be brought out. Often the men are given wives to marry they dont always chose them as there often gifts. That said this family will probably not go into any of this but mostly women have there own rooms if they can afford a house that big.

I never really kept up with the Roloff's, I tend to catch their marathon's when I'm doing laundry and put the TV on a channel and leave it there, so I catch up all at once.
I agree that TLC seems to be grasping for ratings. Their multiple's shows bomb - especially after J&K+8 bombed.
Their baby stories and wedding shows are ok to watch, sometimes, but get replayed and same'ole'd way too much.
Then there's the little people shows... some tattoo'ing shows, some cake shows and then the crap of the craptastical........ "Sister Wives"
The Learning Channel is turning into Total Le Crap
I haven't been able to keep up with LPBW as much as I used to. They took it off my onDemand ugh! I kind of feel like TLC is grasping for ratings. It just doesn't seem like the normal "feel good" shows they usually do. Although Jon & Kate went way down hill and she's still on TV.

The only problem that I see with this show / situation is that the children will ultimately pay for the parents 15 minutes of fame.
Has no one learned from Jon & Kate's adventure with having a TLC show...?
I'm glad that the Roloff's (Little People Big World) are done with TLC after this season, that family is just too damn adorable and I hope they make it through the season intact and happier than they ever were. (Even though I think Matt's a butt head and Amy could do better.) Sorry a lil off topic lol
@Brenda. It's not legal in Utah. Though I read the authoraties choose to focus on abuse within those communities instead of enforcing that law. I don't know why. Maybe because it forces it further underground which could result in increased abuse of children and wives?

ok... i kknow not everyone is religous (and i am not but i do believe some things) and those that are are not all the same religion..but God said to hate the sin and not the sinner...to love your neighbor.... that being said i had to ask my husband what he thought on this subject and i was really amazed that he is against it for himself... he said to each their own. (i think i just fell a little more inlove with him)
and just an fyi its not illegal in all the states. i do believe it is very legal in Utah.

Polygomy is not for me. But, I have no problem with them showing this show. It is illegal but it still happens. It can give an educational aspect to polygomy. I would probably watch it becuase I bet it will be very interesting.

To each their own. As long as everyone is freely consenting and not being forced into the situation, then I have no problem with it. My husband can get me a sister wife as long as she has her own room in the basement, doesn't have any physical contact with him, and does all the housework ;-) (Just in case there's any confusion, I am joking)

I had a dream a couple nites ago that my sister and the guy I am seeing slept together. I woke up in such a tizzy and went to go downstairs to kick her ass...then I realized she is in Switzerland and it was 3 in the morning...so yea. That pretty much sums up how I feel about sharing a guy with ANYONE!
Diane - posted on 09/11/2010
I would like to know the sleeping arrangements and how often each woman get to have sex with him....LOL
Does he rotate on a set schedule? Do they draw straws? Do they all sleep together in a few king sized beds pushed together? Do they let their children watch? Don't laugh.......who really knows.
He said there was jealousy. LMAO
He is not even good looking......
They can do whatever they like and they might even be a nice family, but the idea of a man having his way with that many women doesn't sit well with me. It would annoy me too much to sit through on a regular basis, but I might watch it one time for morbid curiostiy.

What I have an issue with, if it's illegal why do they have a show on national tv advertising it! I think it's not for me. However if it's consensual and everyone is above the adult age, I dont know why it's such a big deal. Just dont make me feel sorry for you in anyway if all of the sudden you as one of the wives start to feel jealous or upset at the situation.
Leah - posted on 09/11/2010
Looks like an amazing show! I will for sure watch it! If the 'wives' have been all married to this guy for 15 years plus (exception with the new soon-to-be wife), then I'm sure they've found a way to make it work. And they all knew what they were getting into. My husband always jokes that he would love to have another wife besides me lol, I'm sure its all men's fantasy! But for the women, I'm sure its not for everyone, just like having kids isn't, being a SAHM isn't etc etc. It takes a different kind of woman but a big thumbs up from me if they are happy!
I couldn't imagine having 3 daughters (I'm assuming the last 14 yr old was a girl???) all age 14! WOW!!!! So if they are trying to "hide" this from the outside world do they all live in seperate houses? If I actually had cable I would probably watch it just to be less confused about the situation...but have NO desire to mimic them!!! YUCK!
