What irrational fears do you have?

[deleted account] ( 61 moms have responded )

Is there something you are afraid of? Something that makes you just scream or run.

For me its spiders. I saw a spider on the ceiling one night while I was reading a book in bed.

I was okay while it was up there and far away! Well the next time I looked up from my book! It was gone!!! I looked everywhere in that room for it.

I slept on the couch!

What is your fear!

lol ok i have a fear of porcelain dolls... i know its weird and all but they are freaky and some are way to life like for me.

my niece was just over 1yr old and i didnt even know she was up and she came running down the hallway ( and she's a powder white little girl at the time with thick brown hair wearing what looks like a dolls dress) and im in the kitchen making lunch. i saw her out of the corner of my eye and i jumped up on the counter and sceamed. i REALLY thought she was a doll.. she was a little and short and just the right size to be a doll. when she finally came into the kitchen all i could do was laugh....lol

Will not allow my hands or feet to go off the bed when I am sleeping.....I think Poltergeist did that one to me.

You too? After seeing that movie, I wouldn't lie on my side in bed for YEARS -- only on my back, so that nothing could sneak up behind me.

-People in masks. Anything where I can't see someone's face..mascots, Halloween costumes...and it's to the point that I hyperventilate and cry. I have NO idea where it came from.
-Driving beside semi's on the highway. I don't really know that this one is irrational though. I just fear that they wont shoulder check or I am in their blind spot and they will just switch lanes OR the driver will fall asleep and swerve into my lane.
-Guinea Pigs. I don't know what it is about these little bastards-maybe the beady eyes but they actually make me sick to my stomach!

Stephany hilarious about the ferrets...

I have a fear of closed in places....do not like elevators and small rooms...like the nurse who closes the door while you wait endlessly for the doctor to come in.

I do not like to fly but the older I get the better I am handling it. We almost crashed going to Cancun as we tried to land twice during a hurricane. Will never get over it....plane almost rolled over in the air.

Do not like worms.........I can't look at them.

Will not allow my hands or feet to go off the bed when I am sleeping.....I think Poltergeist did that one to me.

Jumping fish out of fish tanks.........could never pick one up.

stephany, i have the water escape plan in my head as well!! i also worry about my car setting on fire while filling it with gas, and how i would get my kids out. i can't open one side of my van doors becasue of the gas pump being there so i would have to waste time and go around the other side and get them that way. i really am paranoid, arent i?, lol!!

I have so many!
-Ferrets. Those bastards scare the shit out of me. It's not normal that they can fit through such tiny spaces. I once saw an article about a guy who stole ferrets from a pet store by shoving them in his pants and I couldn't sleep for 2 nights. Creepy bastards.
-I'm terrified that somebody is going to sneak into our house in the middle of the night and take our kids! I lock all the windows and doors, check them several times over, and if I hear even the slightest sound I arm myself with something (like a broom or a toy bat) and sneak in so I can catch the sicko in the act. (Sometimes I have nightmares about this and, when I wake up, I have to visualize beating the crap out of the wacko before the police show up- and they always show up a little too late- otherwise I can't get through the day without being jumpy at every sound.) My kids are probably going to grow up with a fear of a woman entering their room armed with random toys, ready to attack.
-I'm scared of heights and really tall things. For example, the neighborhood I grew up in had a super huge tree and I nearly had a panic attack every time I had to walk under it.
-Spiders. Snails (I know, they can barely move, but those things are nasty and creepy). Really, most bugs. Oh, and snakes. And wild animals (HELLO- they're wild and unpredictable, which equates to scary as fuck).
-Driving over really long bridges that go over water. I'm scared an earthquake will happen and I'll fall into the water. In fact, I think I'm just scared of driving into water. I've imagined an escape plan that would include having to get both kids out of their carseats and out of the car- scary stuff.
Geez, I've got a ton! I'm sure I'll think of more throughout the day, but for now I'm thoroughly creeped out.

I am afraid of spiders... I have had some pretty bad ones my arm under my wrist had what looked like a large apple sized growth on it from a spider and I almost died from a bite on the back of my thigh (not irrational) although i was afraid of them before that! (however i love snakes) I will not dangle anything off the bed or sleep to close to the edge for fear of the monster under the bed (which isn't there lol) slugs creep me out... I have to kind of leap into bed unless my hubby is there... and injuries involving teeth and nails...

Went to Reunion tower in Dallas, took the elevator up, and refused to get out of the elevator. I HATE heights. I feel like I'm going to be sucked out the window or something. *shudders*

Hehe =] I had a bit moment the other day with my fear of the stairs with gaps in...We went on a daytrip to Carlisle and we needed to go over a bridge to get across the main road...we didn't know there was a subway at that time. Well the stairs we had to walk up were the ones with gaps in...I got halfway and started crying lmao! Steven (my husband) thought it was funny. We were also with our two friends James and Kelly who actually showed some sympathy lol! On the way back we discovered the subway thank god and I got Steven back by throwing a toy spider on him which he thought was real!

Seaweed! - convinced it wants to wrap around my feet and pull me under, i know, crazy.
Badgers - nasty little attitudes on feet! i had an incident with one.
And catching my toes in the car door - I always wear flip flops.

[deleted account]

When i was young it was red cars..lol..seriously..for over a year i was afraid to see them or be in a red car..i would have nightmares about a red car coming after me&being in a car crash too.

One day after shopping i was in the back,we have a big family so two boxes of bread were on either side of me..i had no belt on and we were crashed into by a red car on the wrong side of the road..on our side..i was 8 i think..the two boxes of bread saved my life..i got wedged between them stopping me from going through the window screen.

I was never afraid of red cars from that day..you would think i would be worse but no.

Now i dont have any fears..nothing to make me a complete wreck over lol.

[deleted account]

Oh, and I also do the running leap into bed thing... And I can't sleep unless my feet are covered, and forget about even trying to sleep with anything hanging off the bed - not gonna happen!!! I also always check on the kids before I go to bed to make sure their feet are covered too!

[deleted account]

Oh man, so I have issues with my irrational fears!

On our honeymoon, I almost drowned my hubby while we were snorkeling in Hawaii because I was terrified that sharks would come get me... despite the fact we were in very shallow water with lots of tourists (Waikiki beach)... THEY ARE OUT THERE!!!

Ghosts are creepy and I am constantly in fear of them in my house... even though the ONLY ghost encounter I have ever had was really far away from where I live now and in a building with a very dark and violent past (it's actually been on Ghost Hunters and they saw what I saw when I was a little kid!)... I KNOW in my head that my house isn't haunted, but I STILL get freaked out from time to time! Crap, now I have to go to bed thinking about scary ghosts because I wrote this!!!

Dinosaurs WILL come back and they WILL come find me and get me! I do not use port-a-potties because of this (think Jurrasic Park)...

Vampires are our there and as I lock up every night I turn off the light and whisper out the door "You're not welcome here!" before slaming it shut and locking it really quickly...

That's it... for now... My hubby seems to think we should go watch this movie called Wolfman (with Benecio Del Torro) tomorrow night... I may have to add warewolves to my list after that...

[deleted account]

I thought of another one. I've got this fear that when I'm looking out of a window when it's dark outside someone will come up to the window and scare me!

I do the bad man thing too! when I was younger I used to put layers and layers of blankets over me, so that if someone broke into my house and stabbed me, they would just get the blankets! I have the worst irrational fears, I feel quite insane at time, I can't be by myself of a night, I convince myself I will be raped or murdered. (I have an array of household home made weapons!) I hate spiders, bugs, snakes, horses,(most animals really) heights, dust, chalk, flour, driving fast, driving in the rain, swimming, all of these things make me cringe, some make me cry, others I scream and run away like a baby.

Yeah I hate earthquakes or the thought of them. If I hear a creak in the house, I automatically think it's the start of an earthquake and go into panic mode.

The bad thing is is that this baby is SO super-active, that sometimes she'll be kicking/moving so much that I wake up in the middle of the night thinking it's an earthquake, when it's just the baby shaking me :P But really, it scares me!

The about to pop balloon thing, yeah that makes me cringe. Not really a phobia, but I don't like it one bit. Other things that make me cringe: People putting any sort of fabric in their mouth. If my kid chews on his blanket my mouth hurts and my stomach turns. Being in the same room as someone clipping their nails. gag. I have to remove myself from those situations.

I'm scared of balloons.

Go ahead, you can laugh.

It's not even the balloons, per se, but if they're in a situation where it looks like they're going to pop. So a balloon just floating there doesn't bother me.

But if someone is blowing up a balloon, especially if they're blowing it up to the point where it looks like it could pop, or if a kid is squeezing a balloon...anything like that, and my heart races, I get really anxious, and almost feel like I'm going to cry.

Haha even though I was melting with heat during my pregnancy (typical the year we have a good summer I happen to be pregnant) and had to have my legs propped on pilliows too, I still had to slip my feet under the duvet even though they were the only thing underneath it :-)

I used to have the "bad man" phobia too that made me cover my feet! In fact up until I was probably 20 or 21 I had to have the sheet over my ears! I don't know why, but I couldn't feel safe enough to fall asleep unless my ears were covered. Feet too. Until I got pregnant and I couldn't cover them because I had to have them propped up on pillows, so since then I've been fine.

Lol you guys reminded me of more random phobias!
I HAVE to check under the bed before I go to sleep. If I don't I will lay there not sleeping until I check. I also don't leisurely walk to the bed after turning out the lights; I leap because that way the thing under my bed (even tho I already checked!) won't be able to grab my feet! I also can't hang my feet or hands off the bed (because the [non existent] thing under my bed will grab them if they are dangling...)

[deleted account]

Oh Brandy I know it is so illogical and I REALLY try not to do it but end up having to because if I don't then I just cannot sleep - I laugh at myself I am rediculous lmao.

Oh and after a little thought I have concluded that 'the bad man' I hide my feet from is in fact the monsters that live under my bed (I have actually lost the plot) gqtm.

If you hold it up to your ear and squish it back and forth between your fingers it makes a sound. lol. I had an ear infection when I was younger and the doctor told my mom to put the drops in the put cotton balls in my ears before bed and I couldn't do it.

Joanna, I have the cotton ball thingy too! Can't stand the texture or that sound!! UGGGHHH!

And Toni, I was literally laughing out while reading your post because I use to do the exact same thing when my fiance was gone!! And I used to do the feet thing but don't anymore. I watched this show called obsessed and there was a woman on there whose husband passed away and she went a little crazy with it and thought she had to say the same prayer the exact same way every night with her kids or something bad might happen to them and it would be her fault and she would check everything in the house twice then end up getting out of bed to recheck the locks, sneak into her kids' rooms to recheck closets. So, I ended up being more afraid of ending up like her than I was that somebody was hiding in the shower waiting for me to go to sleep. lol.

I'm afraid of spiders.

[deleted account]

This isn't about me, but I watched a programme once about phobias and there was this guy who was afraid of tins of baked beans! Poor man. His kids used to find them in the supermarket and chase him around the store! LOL. And for all you people out there afraid of spiders, move to New Zealand. We only have 1 poisonous spider which you never see and the other spiders are tiny and you hardly see them. We also have no snakes!

[deleted account]

You guys have reminded me of more irrational fears I have lol.

If I am home alone I have to check every room and then shut the door behind me before I go to bed (this is after checking the locks on the doors and windows several times) because there is obviously going to be some psycho hiding in my house cos the hubby is out - then I have to sleep with the TV on so I can't hear said psycho...

...another is my feet have to be covered at night because I have a fear that 'the bad man' (I have no idea who this is or how he got in my house) will get me BUT if the blanket is over my feet I'm safe (I'm a wierdo I know).

Bridges Joanna you can't go under them I can't go over them - I HAVE to run across all bridges I need to cross and I have to be central not near the edge - if I am driving then I start getting panicky that I may have to stop on the bridge - I actually closed my eyes when driving over the forth Bridge in Scotland (bloody scary).

Haha, you guys are making these "irrational fear" topics just for me, aren't you?

Cotton balls. I hate the sound and feel of them. I think it's a texture thing. But the thought of touching one sends me into panic mode. I also hate having to pick things up from a poofier type of carpet, like stickers. My husband is the crumb/sticker/messy carpet cleaner. I just can't stand the texture of the fibers in my fingers. Ugh.

I'm also terrified of parking in parking structures or being stuck in traffic under a bridge. I think it stems back to seeing a movie about earthquakes when I was younger, where the bridge crumbled and trapped/killed people underneath. But I will not stop under a bridge. I will change lanes, get very close to the car in front of me, or just wait and hold up traffic, just so I don't have to be stopped under a bridge on the freeway. Stupid California. Stupid earthquakes.

Death is my MAJOR fear. It's like a debilitating fear. If I think about it too much, I have a panic attack. :(

I'm also, like Kati, terrified of driving beside, ahead of or behind Semis or other large trucks, especially trucks hauling wood. I'm always afraid that one of the logs is going to slide off and go through my windshield . :(
