When my son Colby turned 1 we had a luau, mostly because it was one of my first themed parties and luau's are fairly easy to accomplish and in May there are an abundance of Luau novelty items at our local dollar stores. I've posted some pictures of various aspects of the party; the tablescape was largely done with food art- I carved a watermelon to look like a tiki head ( if it was an adult party this melon would have had a hole cut in the top and a bottle of rum poured in. Adults Only!) I also used carrots, green bell peppers, and the bottom of a pineapple to make the palm trees. I used another watermelon and cut it in to three pieces then using skewers mounted them to create and 3 tiered tray to holed bits of fruit. Another one of my favorite aspects to this table scape is one of the smallest details, I took beautifully shaped orange juice bottles straight from the supermarket and ran them under hot water to remove the labels the using the contour of the bottle I made new custom labels; one with a hula boy and another with a hula girl! I also made the cake myself by just taking a sheet cake and icing it with blue icing that had not been well blended ( the color streaks added depth and water like waves) then in one corner I sprinkled brown sugar to look like sand, then we added a hula girl and a surf board figurine to top it off. For the Pinata I used to tea bag boxes and taped them together then using multi colored tissue paper and some tiki head cut outs from the dollar tree I glued them all together to create a fun looking Tiki Head Pinata! Another fun addition that sadly I have to pictures of, was a set of old 2 litter bottles that I cleaned up and decorated with tropical birds and various letters from my sons name, then we lined them up and the kids used a real coconut to go Bowling with- they had alot of fun. Lastly what party would be complete with out a photo opt! So I got a six foot Tiki man on thin vinyl ( from the dollar store!!) and everyone stood in front of it to got their pictures taken with my Digi then before the party was over I printed up the photos and put them in paper picture frames that I decorated with tropical birds and passed them out as Thank You gifts to the adults while the kids got favor bags and really cute battery operated latterns that looked like tiki heads and monkeys and such. It was one of the best parties I ever threw and it was the party that gave me the bug! Now its a business that I run and I work parties for other people, but this party was my humble beginning. Thank you for letting me share it with you!

I love it! Tiki parties are so fun and colorful and I love the Watermelon idea. Thank you for sharing. Tiki parties are great for any occasion in the summer. Keep those ideas commin' and good luck with your business. It's great when you can do something you love for a living.
