Where are the good neighborhoods at?

I'm currently living in the Rockwood area of Gresham due to my being on rent subsidy. My lease and subsidy end in July and I'm looking to move when that happens. The neighborhood I live in right now is awful; I'm right in the middle of gangland and I fear for my safety & my children's safety on a daily basis. What are some good neighborhoods in Oregon? I'd like to stay in Portland, but can move as far out as Oregon City or Salem. Help!!

Thank you! Yeah, I'm slowly learning the the further into Gresham I go, the worse it gets! And I work in the Hollywood district, so I hear all about that fun little area from my co workers (real estate agents, thank goodness!).

Try the Belmont district, it's not terrible and there's lots of fun stuff to do around that area! You can also try certain parts of North Portland like out towards St. Johns. It's not so gang affiliated and most of the people that do look like gang bangers are middle school kids that are harmless. Stay away from 102nd and up "the numbers", your area, NE, and most of 82nd.
