Starting out... how to advertise?

I have very little contact right now with "the outside world" being a SAHM, to 2 kids under 2. I want to create a flier (?) or something to promote my photo skills. How do you go about doing it to really capture the eye appeal? How did you first start garnering business? Even the first client?

I am going to start taking the kids to a Mommy and Me type class... but even then it's hard to make contacts.

Thanks so much!

I agree with everyone else. Start small, local. That way you won't be overwhelmed. I recommend getting free postcard flyers from Vista Print to advertise a free session and then get some free business cards there too! Go around to local businesses and post your card on their boards or leave them at the counters! Coffee shops, florists, art stores, wherever! Network with people but make sure you have something concrete for them to see. Start a blog up for free and start posting you pictures there so you can at least have a "website" to put on your business cards for prospective clients to see your work.

I started with friends, and did referral cards. Most of my clients still come from word of mouth.

Hi

I made a flyer and dragged the pram and the dog around popping them in letter boxes with very little sucess. If you can get a bit more direct i think its more useful.

I made a wedding flyer, and a baby photography(offering free portrait shoot) and gave it to my local florist, she gives them to prospective bride clients, and when baby flowers get delivered. I in return have done some free photography for her.

Another way to get clients is tell absolutely everyone you come in contact with you are a photographer, it is my most sucessful means of getting work. When you take the kids to the playgound, chat to other mums, and let them know...

Its so hard when you are juggling lillte ones and trying to get work, but you can do it.

Good Luck

I think a great way to start is to post an ad in your community paper. Not the big city paper, but most communities have a smaller paper for your neighborhood or general area. This cost will be lower than the bigger paper, but will still reach quite a few people.

If you see this, leave this form field blank.
