The patriot act gives the American government the right to do anything they want to "terrorists" (spy on them, torture them, detain them) yet never defines what a terrorist is...for the record EVERY country, government, region has a different definition of terrorism. (and most of them contain some kind of provision that a terrorist is against the government) I'd be careful what I say if I were you...GW screwed your right to disagree with Obama (thank god he's NOT what the far right has painted him to be)

The USA Patriot Act has been a blessing for us. There has been 23 plots foiled since it was inacted. Think about how many lives have been saved.
I've also just read up on what it actually is about and find nothing that is against a person's freedom or human rights.
As for the fact that a lot of us here in the States not trusting our goverment. How can you trust them on this, when they first said that they would not be covering illegals, then the R's wanted to have written in wording to ensure this it was shot down. Now there are D's that want to cover them. They are using the medicare fee-for-service as their base plan for the health care bill. This is a system that has been shown for excessive fraud. They have not put in any safe guards to prevent this.
These are some of the problems that the R's and blue dogs D's want to get fixed before signing on this bill. This is not a bad thing to request. They need to fix and get things right now before things get too bad.
Then for the topic of this post. You should see O'Reilly and Glenn Beck go at it too. They dissagree on things too.

Exactly, human rights and freedom were stomped all over in the Patiort Act but it got rammed through. Same with the preemptive strike in Iraq. The only good thing about W was he didn't care about public opinion and got stuff done. Obama needs some of that attitude.

That is EXACTLY why I'm for smaller government. I don't trust them to have too much power.
You're not for a smaller government...you are for a government that agrees with you even though you are in the minority. The republican government has been expanding the power of the government for years.
Where were the Teabaggers when Bush passed the Patriot Act?

"I don't trust the government" is a conversation killer...there's nothing anyone can say to that. It proves that no matter what Obama does the right has already decided he is wrong.
You're worried about giving too much power to the government, but you've given COMPLETE control over to the corporations..good idea, they have much purer intentions.

Because like I already said I don't trust our government. Once that's in place they can change the rules as they please until it's the ONLY option left. It might not have to go back to a vote or anything.
Well, I don't trust our insurance companies. They've already made it clear that they are not acting in our best interest.

That attitude is why nothing major will likely be done in the near future. Not enough people will ever agree on a solution. No options will ever be good enough for a certain segment of the population. So what's the point right?
Jenny - posted on 10/07/2009
This issue has nothing to do with power over the people and everything to do with allowing all citizens access to health care. Saying it has anythnig to do with government control of the citizens or a power struggle is a red herring.
So who out there is against the public option and doesn't have access to insurance? I'm betting zero to nobody.

Nobody is, Dana....that's why people are fighting like hell to not let anything get more out of control than it already is! The gov't, either party, doesn't let go of power once they've gotten it. That's why we are not willing to give them even more, especially when we see how they've jacked it all up.....show me something that works well, sticks to budget, and is more cost effective than the private sector, and then I'll be willing to give them a whirl. I don't see that happening in my lifetime, however.

Christa I don't see where Dana used your name or posted directly at you. There are a lot of people who do not look into things themselves and go off what others say. Whether those people are educated or biased in the discussions is not always clear either. Though some obviously aren't.
They are not hiding behind a public option. It is a huge ordeal to switch over to a universal health care system. It may be the first step in getting one in place or it could just be that and always stay with that. No one can see into the future. /:)
However if the people want to see the bill by all means push to see it.
Amie - posted on 10/07/2009
At least someone on that news station is forcing them to admit it's not a government take over. It's a public option. Huge, huge difference.
If you want government take over, get a universal health care system. That's not in the bill though is it? No it's not.. they want to provide a low cost, public option.
Even the single payer plan that was kicking around for awhile is not a government run system.
Here is what they are though:
Government run - all hospitals are owned by the government and all doctors are government employees.
Single payer - government funds all health care but hospitals and doctors remain private.
Public Option - government funds one of many insurance plans in the market place.
Because a public option is what is on the table I will never understand why they keep comparing the states to Canada and other countries that have some form of universal health care. It is not the same, it is comparing apples to oranges. Our system works for us, it is not what Obama is trying to do to the states, leave other countries out of it.
