Rick Perry - you can't make this stuff up...

From a NYT article 12-28-2011

"Energy: The audiences at Mr. Perry’s events seemed somewhat unmoved by parts of his speech that talked about job creation. But when it came to energy and oil, they perked up.

“Every barrel of oil that comes out of those sands in Canada is a barrel of oil that we don’t have to buy from a foreign source,” Mr. Perry said in Clarinda, earning a loud round of enthusiastic applause.

Later, the audience reacted again to Mr. Perry’s assertion that buying so much energy from foreign countries is “not good policy, it’s not good politics and frankly it’s un-American.”

Fair enough Johnny and I told him that. He said some stuff about how it's a smaller amount blah blah blah, but my sinus meds tuned him out.

I do agree that we (in general) should try gearing towards renewable energy sources instead of just oil, oil oil drill baby drill. I can't think of anything else to add right now. I've been out of commisson for a few days

Megan, I am opposed to the pipeline. But I do have to quibble with your husband's suggestion on the tankers. Statistically, there are far more accidents involving them than there are with pipelines. The modern pipelines are equipped with a huge array of sensors that detect spills automatically without someone needing to happen by. The increased truck traffic would also add to the need for oil and the resulting pollution. Unfortunately, unless people do change their habits, push government to start supporting green initiatives, and boycott oil products, the pipeline may be an evil necessity. And sadly the best of a bunch of bad options.

The truth is that it isn't much of a job creator, and the government subsidies that go into building up the oil sands are happening at the expense of other industries. Many major Canadian economists are fearful that Canada is on the way to becoming an oil state without a lot of other economic options to sustain itself when the oil runs out. I see this at my work, where the vast majority of our profits are made in that industry while all the wind farm, solar farm, and other green energy projects being touted 5 years ago have been dropped due to lack of interest and funding. The Canadian government is happy to ruin our environment and economy in the long term for the ease of a quick buck.

Pamela, I understand your fear so, so much. On the PDM thread I started concerning “occupy the courts,” someone posted and it’s so evident that the person did NOT get the reason for the protest, and did NOT understand the trends of lowering middle class and the ever increasing “income” going to the rich.

I’m just sick of the ability of the Wing-nut media to shape and form support for people who don’t need and often don’t want it. I have heard so many rich people say something like, “TAX ME! I can handle it and I want the country to prosper with my help.”

Here’s what I say, and I am repeating some of my post from the other thread:

There is an answer to this problem, but folks would rather listen to the drivel coming from the Right Wing-nut media that says it's "class warfare" against the rich. I'll tell you what, the real class warfare started with Reagan and his "trickle-down" economics that NEVER worked and most economists knew at the time that it would NEVER work.

I feel sorry for the people who cannot see that our elected officials have a vested interest in keeping the rich in their back pockets.

I don’t know if there is a way to educate those who will believe the proven misinformation of the Right-wing-nut media. The selfishness coming from the media and politicians is unconscionable.

Pamela, sometimes we have to put these problems on a shelf and ignore them so that we may live a happier life. It’s okay to take a break from all this dumb stuff and go watch a comedy and laugh it up.

Nice typo by the way, I did notice and wonder; glad you left it. LOL

Didn't you hear? Canada annexed the US so we are now all one happy, trilingual country.

Pamela, a few Canadians want it including Harper. But the Majority of Canada has said no. DH says the main issue with us is that the pipeline will go through so many unpopulated areas- especially in northern AB that there could be a leak and it would take literally weeks for anyone to notice. He's done syzmic, he has cousins who have worked on oil sand rigs and one cousin who died while working on the rigs. He says the best option if the US wants more Canadian oil would be to get oil tankers to come from the oil sands in AB and BC to the Gulf. This would lead to more long term jobs and more economic growth

What has concerned me has been the ability for those controlling the narrative (and they're not liberal by any stretch of the imagination) to convince people to embrace ideas that are against their own interests. That baffles me. As a follower of Jesus I cannot get my head around this free market concept that may be "free" for corporations to do whatever the heck they want to do, even at the expense of our country; but the free market is disastrous for the rest of us. I probably read too much - but we have corporations controlling our food (Monsanto anyone?) and it will only be a matter of time before they control our water. This is bad bad bad. I'm very upset about the NDAA bill Obama signed - with its provision for indefinite detention of citizens. Oh now they say they'll only detain terrorists (like from Al Qaeda) - but how long before OWS protesters are declared "terrorists"? OWS showed up at Grand Central Station in NYC and about 150 were arrested for attempting a "mic check." We're heading into martial law and I blame the conservatives for this because they give head only to their corporate masters, though the corporate masters will turn on them too when they are no longer needed.

My grandma fed her kids onion sandwiches during the depression, I'm always glad we (we meaning my family) aren't there yet. We (as a nation) still have "entitlements" but I know of many people who are not doing well at all.

Maybe we should organize writing campaigns to our Representatives and Senators... let them know what we really think and attempt to keep them educated. The really sad thing is that it doesn't need to be like this.

On Tavis Smiley's show this guy
http://www.earth.columbia.edu/articles/v...
Jeffery Sachs talked about the economy in the US, and it was exactly what I have been seeing and what I know to be the problems.

I don't think the show is on the internet yet, but Sachs has a new book out called "The Price of Civilization."

New thing I found when you are trying to post, there is a little box that asks what community you want to post in; if you do not click that and put PDM or what have you I don't think it will post. Could that be the problem?

I have attempted to start some conversations on PDM and none of them post. I am very grumpy about this. Karla, check out WP's Ezra Klein's post regarding Romney's tax plan - it will save the top 1% $82,000 and cost we peasants...ready for this?...$157 more. Now on one hand, $157 isn't the end of the world. But on the other hand, if we're struggling to even get food on the table...it hurts pretty gd bad.

Isn't that the truth? I have to keep reassuring my boys that all will be well...but will it? They're scaring the heck outta me that's for sure. I have to do a bit more research on the Keystone pipeline - I wasn't aware that Canada didn't want it.

Seriously Canada doesn't want the pipeline? Then how is it getting shoved down the Midwest's throat? Or is it a corporation that's just doing what it wants? We sure as heck don't want it. .

DH says that a better economic plan would be to hire more tanker trucks to transport oil from the oil sands in AB to the gulf coast in TX. It would mean more longer lasting jobs and a larger economic improvement. Dh is also a natural born Canadian who thinks the Republican party is nuts and that the US would be stupid to try and force Canada into anything

Good question! I think if God and the Canadians explained it some Republicans still would not hear it... Perhaps if god put the words in Rush Limbaugh's mouth...um... no even god wouldn't go there. never mind.

I try. Do you think it would be God or the Canadians who would have to explain to Oil industry lobbyists and the Republicans that even if Obama wanted the Keystone pipeline it wouldn't matter because Canada doesn't want it? Because even if Obama approved the pipeline it would be going through Alberta which -despite Perry's obvious lack of geography- is a Canadian province.

And the Canadians didn't kick his ass out? I know that Harper is just itching for a new Conservative (Harper is part of Canada's conservative party ) US president, but other Canadians aren't as earger.

Also Canada has more guns per capita than the US, so good luck getting our oil sands.

ETA: DH says that Canada has been secretly infiltrating the US for years so that soon the annexation will be complete without a shot being fired.
