Um since it is Government funded the government has every right to go in and audit. When/If they find it lacking then take the necessary steps. It's the government's money, either play by the rules or the money is yanked. It's that simple. I will never understand why this concept is lost in America.
A front for organized crime? LOL! Ok then... takes a lot more than advising prostitutes how to apply for homes and cheat on their taxes to equal organized crime. The extremes being thrust out there all the time is getting ridiculous.

Agreed Amie, not to mention in a large organisation you are bound to have bad apples but that does not mean that ACORN itself is. Are schools and churches fronts for underaged sex parties because a few teachers and preachers have crossed the line with minors? Nope. It's always about the individuals involved.

I would say biased and lazy. Newsrooms, from what I've heard, keep on lowering their budgets, which means they don't send people out to investigate as they once did. They wait and see what rolls out from the wires. I think their bias is not always recognized by themselves either. Like fish don't know they are wet, journalists don't know they are biased.

Statement from Bertha Lewis, Chief Organizer, ACORN Regarding Recent News Reports
September 12, 2009

The relentless attacks on ACORN's members, its staff and the policies and positions we promote are unprecedented. An international entertainment conglomerate, disguising itself as a "news" agency (Fox), has expended millions, if not tens of millions of dollars, in their attempt to destroy the largest community organization of Black, Latino, poor and working families in the country. It is not coincidence that the most recent attacks have been launched just when health care reform is gaining traction. It is clear they've had these tapes for months.

We are their Willy Horton for 2009. We are the boogeyman for the right-wing and its echo chambers. If ACORN did not exist, the right-wing would have needed to create us in order to achieve their agenda, their missions, their ideal, retrograde America. This recent scam, which was attempted in San Diego, Los Angeles, Miami, New York, Philadelphia to name a few places, had failed for months before the results we've all recently seen. I am appalled and angry; I cannot and I will not defend the actions of the workers depicted in the video, who have since been terminated. But it is clear that the videos are doctored, edited, and in no way the result of the fabricated story being portrayed by conservative activist "filmmaker" O'Keefe and his partner in crime. And, in fact, a crime it was - our lawyers believe a felony - and we will be taking legal action against Fox and their co-conspirators.

We will not be intimidated by this international conglomerate, which has made as its mission the destruction of our organization. ACORN members are committed to the empowerment of their communities - Black, Latino, poor, and working families – at the deepest level. We are an organization committed to halting the foreclosure crisis and keeping people in their homes. We are an organization committed to ensuring quality, affordable health care for every American. We are an organization that will not be stopped in our commitment to our members and our communities which has included:

* Helping hundreds of thousands of African-American and Latino voters register to vote and get to the polls in recent years;
* Preparing, since 2004, approximately 150,000 free tax returns totaling $190 million in refunds and increased earned income tax credit participation;
* Providing effective foreclosure prevention advocacy saving thousands of American families from losing their homes to foreclosure.

AGREED. Too many people cry wolf on it and call anything and everything racism. All it does is marginalize true racism.

I agree with that too. It's making real racism lose importance when anything involving more than one race is being called racism. People are getting sick of hearing the word.

BTW - the 'race' card is getting pretty old and tattered. Pretty soon it will fall apart and people will realize just how ridiculous it was to use it as many times as they have. *shakes head*

At least that's something we can agree on.

While racism is still an issue it's not an issue everytime people of different races are involved.

Thanks for bringing that up Traci. I'm getting tired of being called a bigot, lunatic, crazy right winger etc because I see the facts. If people want to believe their own nonsense, then let them.

I said they have every right to go in and do so. The government has every right to audit any business or organization if they so choose. Unless your ways are so backwards down there from here. But I can't see that.

For a free country you guys sure don't seem to be all that free if this crap goes on all the time. If you don't have control then you really aren't all that free are you?

It's like the case with social services in the last couple years in my city. Higher ups and a few workers were fired for doing up false case files and collecting the money themselves. Does that mean the entire of Social services is corrupt? No. It means those people are. They were fired and brought up on charges and now get to sit in jail while their possessions are sold off to repay their debt to taxpayers. That's how it should be done.

Also, no one was talking about race until you brought it up. It seems to be an epidemic lately in the states for everyone to equate something with race or racism. As for those whistle blowers. Um are they doing interviews or have they signed affidavits and going through the courts?

Amie, you are mistaken.  ACORN gets money through the gov't through various means, but the gov't doesn't audit it.  Like I said, House Judiciary Chairman John Conyers (D-surprise, surprise) said the powers that be decided against it.  Heck, there are 8 members of ACORN who were kicked out because they wanted to check the books and the higher ups in ACORN won't let them!!!  Look up the ACORN 8, check them out.  They are whistle blowers in all this.  And for all those who accuse ACORN naysayers of racism....they're all black as well :)  One of them in fact said ACORN is run like a plantation.  It's all the black folks doing the ground work, while the rich white guys--Dale and Wade Radthke rake in all the money....Some wonderful investigative reporting has been done by someone who shall remain nameless (once I utter the name, most will stop listening).

And to Jenny who seems to think this is just a bunch of bad apples.....so far, the same sting was done in FOUR cities, all with similar results.....so go ahead and keep believing that.  The people are corrupt thugs.  Corrupt thugs who our prez says will be involved in shaping policy.  I sleep great at night knowing that....

I'm a conservative Independent. I vote according to my values and according to a particular candidates values/track record.

It is a non-governmental organization, but still an 'unofficial' arm of the Democratic party. It is a front for organized crime and it is evident since there is yet another undercover tape just released today. It's high time for a congressional investigation.

And BTW  - I will reiterate again.  I am an INDEPENDENT.

Since it's a non-governmental organization I don't get how this arm of the government I keep hearing comes into play. Just because it has liberal leanings and gets funded does not mean the government runs it and is an arm of the government.

I have no idea why you stating you're an indepedent (who seems to follow the republican side) has any bearing on anything. It also does not seem to be a correct statement. If you follow a certain political sides leaning then just stating you are independent doesn't make it so.

Do your news media not have a code of conduct they must follow? I'm guessing not, at least no where near what ours is.
Our biggest news station (CTV) has a 24 page document on Code of Conduct for all employees. From the floor men to the journalists. With penalties in place should any of them breach the code of conduct.
CBC (another news station) is a crown corporation. (Government funded) It is also publicly traded so in essence it is the public's station.

"The problem is we have a lazy media"

It really is that bad, Amie. The corruption that flows in and out of Washington is just terrible. Both sides of the aisle are guilty of it. I think our political apathy is to blame for it. It's all about money in Washington. All these organizations are all funneling money to this org or another. ACORN is only a small piece of it. SEIU is another large part of it. CCI. The list goes on....

The problem is we have a lazy media. The mainstream news media doesn't report or investigate this stuff. So how are ordinary citizens supposed to even hear about this stuff? People work, have jobs, have families, homes to care for, things to do. Look at all the stuff that has been uncovered about ACORN and it's affiliates and if you turn on your news at 10 or 11 pm....not a word about it. That is what is so maddening about all this. The story is there, why aren't they talking about it? John Conyers, House Judiciary Chairman, of the Congress said at one point he'd investigate ACORN and then later on when asked why he hasn't said, "The powers that be decided against it." He then tried to backtrack and say he was referring to himself as the powers that be...c'mon! We are not that gullible, pal.

People just don't know where to go from here. That's why the tea parties are sprouting up. People are losing all the apathy they once had and they're saying, "Okay, Bush spent and wasted. BO said he wasn't gonna do that, so we voted him in and now it's still the same." We are getting screwed from both parties and we are beginning to stand up to it.

That's probably the biggest problem I have with this healthcare thing. The libertarian in me really doesn't believe in the nanny state, but then again I know that some people need help. If there was a decent plan and most importantly, IF I COULD TRUST MY GOV'T, I might be able to support something like that. But history shows us that we cannot trust our gov't. Every single program they have ever created has cost more than originally forecasted. Medicare is broke, Medicaid is broke, Social Security is broke. The saying goes- the definition of insanity expecting different results from doing the same thing. What are we thinking??? To even entertain the notion that the gov't can take over such a large sector of our economy and do it correctly and as promised is, well, dumb. It just is.

We need to get our butts in order and fix what is wrong, instead of us controlling them, like our founders intended our country to be, they control us. They get away with far too much. I know this is starting to turn into a manifesto rather than an answer to the OP, but I kinda got carried away. That's my feelings. We are messed up right now and we need to get back on track.

Seriously though, if it truly is that bad.
What is wrong with Americans? I don't care what side of the fence you are on if that is true charges need to be laid. Stop squabbling, stop using the news as a source to get it out (the video posted is a prime example of how NOT to do it) and do something productive. That shit would never fly here, not in a million years would Canadians allow that to happen.

Laura, (am I talking to myself?) Obama gave ACORN 800k of his own money before he was Pres. He has given them another couple mil of tax payer money since, I believe. Plus, he wants to put them in charge of taking the census despite the fact that they can't seem to get non fraudulant info. on voter registration forms. So, if it was just another crazy follower their wouldn't be anything to discuss other than another government agency gone bad, but it isn't just that. There's no recognization of past problems, errors in procedures, basically crimes instead there's here's some more money and responsibility.

With Acorn and Obama it is a two way street of support. He has been on video in 2007 with Acorn telling them that they are going to help him shape America. SEIU is run by the brother of the head of acorn. Obama is also using their help. I know there is corruption on all sides of the aisle, what we would like to accomplish is to have all of this corruption stop. No more special interests, no more pork, etc... If we continue to play the blame game then nothing will get accomplished.

Seems to me a lot of crazy people support people for the wrong reason and it's not their fault who follows them?

And people only blame the government for our economic crisis. It's people showing others how to cheat on their taxes that have added to the disaster that we're in. I hope more people see this video and demand that this nonsense be put to an end. ACORN needs to be brought down and I agree Brenda, it's a front for organized crime.

LOL, she definitely was very close to a 'wardrobe malfunction.'

[deleted account]

Ok, tell me honestly. Is there a reason WHY the other networks did not report this? Hmm..could it be that they are IN THE TANK for the Obama administration?

This is undisputeable. The video is as plain as day. If you can't see that ACORN is a front for organized crime, then I really don't know what to say.

BTW - I love how 'professional' the ACORN employees looked. My word! The large black woman looked close to having a 'wardrobe malfunction'!
