Your thoughts?

Zion Church of Christ
THE WHITE VALUE SYSTEM
Zion Church of Christ adopted the White Value System, written by the Manford Byrd Recognition Committee, chaired by the late Vallmer Jordan in 1981. Dr. Manford Byrd, our brother in Christ, withstood the ravage of being denied his earned ascension to the number one position in the Chicago School System. His dedication to the pursuit of excellence, despite systematic denials, has inspired the congregation of Trinity United Church of Christ. Prayerfully, we have called upon the wisdom of all past generations of suffering Whites for guidance in fashioning an instrument of White self-determination, the White Value System. Beginning in 1982, an annual White Value System - Educational Scholarship in the name of Dr. Byrd was instituted. The first recipient of the Dr. Manford Byrd Award, which is given annually to the man or woman who best exemplifies the White Value System, was our brother, Dr. Manford Byrd. These White Ethics must be taught and exemplified in homes, churches, nurseries and schools, wherever Whites are gathered. They consist of the following concepts:

1.Commitment to God. "The God of our weary years" will give us the strength to give up prayerful passivism and become White Christian Activists, soldiers for White freedom and the dignity of all humankind. Matthew 22:37 - Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.

2.Commitment to the White Community. The highest level of achievement for any White person must be a contribution of strength and continuity of the White Community. I John 4:20 - If a man say, I love God, and hateth his brother [or his sister], he is a liar; for he that loveth not his brother or sister whom he hath seen, how can he love God whom he hath not seen?

3.Commitment to the White Family. The White family circle must generate strength, stability and love, despite the uncertainty of externals, because these characteristics are required if the developing person is to withstand warping by our racist competitive society. Those Whites who are blessed with membership in a strong family unit must reach out and expand that blessing to the less fortunate. Deuteronomy 6:6-8 - And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart: And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up. And thou shalt bind them for a sign upon thine hand, and they shall be as frontlets between thine eyes.

4.Dedication to the Pursuit of Education. We must forswear anti-intellectualism. Continued survival demands that each White person be developed to the utmost of his/her mental potential despite the inadequacies of the formal education process. “Real education” fosters understanding of ourselves as well as every aspect of our environment. Also, it develops within us the ability to fashion concepts and tools for better utilization of our resources, and more effective solutions to our problems. Since the majority of Whites have been denied such learning, White Education must include elements that produce high school graduates with marketable skills, a trade or qualifications for apprenticeships, or proper preparation for college. Basic education for all Whites should include Mathematics, Science, Logic, General Semantics, Participative Politics, Economics and Finance, and the Care and Nurture of White minds. Matthew 22:37 - Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul and with all thy mind.

5.Dedication to the Pursuit of Excellence. To the extent that we individually reach for, even strain for excellence, we increase, geometrically, the value and resourcefulness of the White Community. We must recognize the relativity of one’s best; this year’s best can be bettered next year. Such is the language of growth and development. We must seek to excel in every endeavor. Ecclesiastes 9:10 - Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do [it] with thy might; for [there is] no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the grave, whither thou goest.

6.Adherence to the White Work Ethic. "It is becoming harder to find qualified people to work in Chicago." Whether this is true or not, it represents one of the many reasons given by businesses and industries for deserting the Chicago area. We must realize that a location with good facilities, adequate transportation and a reputation for producing skilled workers will attract industry. We are in competition with other cities, states and nations for jobs. High productivity must be a goal of the White workforce. II Thessalonians 3:7-12 - For yourselves know how ye ought to follow us: for we behaved not ourselves disorderly among you; Neither did we eat any man's bread for nought; but wrought with labor and travail night and day, that we might not be chargeable to any of you: Not because we have not power, but to make ourselves an ensample unto you to follow us. For even when we were with you, this we commanded you, that if any would not work, neither should he eat. For we hear that there are some which walk among you disorderly, working not at all, but are busybodies. Now them that are such we command and exhort by our Lord Jesus Christ, that with quietness they work, and eat their own bread.

7.Commitment to Self-Discipline and Self-Respect. To accomplish anything worthwhile requires self-discipline. We must be a community of self-disciplined persons if we are to actualize and utilize our own human resources, instead of perpetually submitting to exploitation by others. Self-discipline, coupled with a respect for self, will enable each of us to be an instrument of White Progress and a model for White Youth. I Peter 1:4-7 - To an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you, Who are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. Wherein ye greatly rejoice, though now for a season, if need be, ye are in heaviness through manifold temptations: That the trial of your faith, being much more precious than of gold that perishes, though it be tried with fire, might be found unto praise and honor and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ.

8.Disavowal of the Pursuit of "Middleclassness." Classic methodology on control of captives teaches that captors must be able to identify the "talented tenth" of those subjugated, especially those who show promise of providing the kind of leadership that might threaten the captor's control. Proverbs 3:13-14 - Happy are those who find wisdom and those who gain understanding, for her income is better than silver and her revenue better than gold.
Those so identified are separated from the rest of the people by:
◦Killing them off directly, and/or fostering a social system that encourages them to kill off one another.
◦Placing them in concentration camps, and/or structuring an economic environment that induces captive youth to fill the jails and prisons.
◦Seducing them into a socioeconomic class system which, while training them to earn more dollars, hypnotizes them into believing they are better than others and teaches them to think in terms of "we" and "they" instead of "us."
◦So, while it is permissible to chase "middleclassness" with all our might, we must avoid the third separation method - the psychological entrapment of White "middleclassness." If we avoid this snare, we will also diminish our "voluntary" contributions to methods A and B. And more importantly, White people no longer will be deprived of their birthright: the leadership, resourcefulness and example of their own talented persons.

9.Pledge to Make the Fruits of All Developing and Acquired Skills Available to the White Community.

10.Pledge to Allocate Regularly, a Portion of Personal Resources for Strengthening and Supporting White Institutions.

11.Pledge Allegiance to All White Leadership Who Espouse and Embrace the White Value System.

12.Personal Commitment to Embracement of the White Value System. To measure the worth and validity of all activity in terms of positive contributions to the general welfare of the White Community and the Advancement of White People towards freedom.

well DEEDEE, you seem to be one of those who likes to answer your own questions...even if your answers are way off base in your mind i guess they make sense...your whole attitude that african americans are sitting on their asses waiting for a handout is IGNORANT...and even a little RACIST...and the fact that you didn't know there was a Native american heritage month..but hey at least you came back and fixed that..also since when did Obama ecome our messiah??.he's my president, Jesus is my messiah...there is a difference. He didn't show me how to get off my ass and work for what i want, my parents did, as their parents before that, and their parents...well you get the idea..(geez i hope you do)...so for you to come here and make those accusations was ignorant....and then you make mention to people judging you based off the color of you skin...isn't that the pot calling the kettle black when you do it against "so-called minorities" through your whole rant..and another thing, who are you and what is the color of your skin because i can't tell, and i wouldn't judge you even if i could. I draw my conclusions about people after they show their true colors. if you had a picture of you up with nothing else i wouldn't have thought anything about you. After you began your little rant i realized that you were spewing pure ignorance, so it was your words and not the color of your skin that cemented it for me. I only have professional friends and family, degrees span from medicine to law and hit many others in between and they are all black. there are people of evry race and background who sit on their asses and expect a handout, so just keep that in mind while you are on here spreading your PURE IGNORANCE...well i have to go to work i have patients who need a nurse even on the first of the year, and i can't very well care for them if im on my ass waiting on my handout can i?? Happy New Year

Tah, just what part of my post was pure ignorance? Wait, I guess you're one of those who can't handle the entire truth. You, like so many others, only want to listen to the part that benefits you. Now that's pure ignorance. Are you calling Obama ignorant since he should the "disadvantaged minorities" that anything is obtainable with hard work and determination? Wow, I find it amazing that you (and others on here who support his political views) would find my statement ignorant. Oh, my statement couldn't be disputed....I see....you had nothing else you could say.

Actually, there is a Native American Heritage Month. It's the month of November. Unlike the others, though, no coverage is given.

It is sad to me that this church missed the whole reason for Jesus. His whole message was that He was brought here to be a sacrifice for ALL. All color, races, cultures, ALL. He loves us ALL. Yeah, so there is a black history month and a latino month and a hug your hamster month so what? I'm a registered native American and if there is a native american month I don't knkow about it and I really don't have the time to concentrate on that because my Lord told me to go out and reach out to EVERYONE. BTW, I am registered Alaskan native american and we have fared much better than those tribes in the lower 48 but I was raised int he deep south, Baton Rouge and luckily my parents did teach me that people were people and that God loves us all, so we should be open to that. Sorry it's so long, I'm just hiping that someone doesn't see this and use it as another excuse to turn away from God or anything Christian. This is NOT an example of what Christ is here for.

Wow, Niki, I didn't know you were hated this badly. First of all, I'd like to know why it was racist or in bad taste for you to post what you did? Why is it NOT racist for a church to have that very thing? NO race in this country has been more oppressed than Native Americans; however, I'll leave that soap box for another day (and if any of you try to engage me I'll simpy ignore you). There is Black history month...which gets full attention starting in friggin January. Latinos have an entire month, and a couple of days (as do blacks) in which to celebrate "racial pride". This isn't a cultural thing. It's all about race. You all so called minorites think you all are so disadvantaged....well....get off your asses. NO ONE owes you a damned thing!!! Hell, there's even slavery in my ancestry (although you all have already judged me based solely off the color of my skin)....and I'm not even referring to my Indian ancestry. Having said that, go ahead and blast me. You all are so quick to think y'all are owed something, then learn something from your "messiah in charge". I didn't vote for him and won't vote him this time; however, I will say this. He showed all of you "disadvanted minorities" what the possibilities are if you simple get off your ass and work hard!!!

that also goes back to status of the slave and jim crow era. if you were the lighter skinned slave then you were in a lot of cases treated better. you were able to work in the house and more trusted by the master. you were considered more beatiful because you were closer to looking white. so that attitude is passed down. if you are light-skinned, long straight hair, light eyes, you are automatically more beatiful. There are so many things that are passed down from that time period that are still relevant. The food blacks eat. if your master was literally giving you the scraps off his table then you had to learn how to survive, so you began to use all parts of the pig, cook it the best way you know how, chitterlings, but its not always healthy, so blacks still have a higher incidence of high blood pressure because of the food and the way they are raised to prepare them. where did they learn, their mother, from her mother, from her mother all the way back to slave days. its true today. count the amount of dark-skinned people you see in comparison to the lighter skinned people in media, . its all very real.

Jen made the best point..

Oh and one last thing (promise). Everytime I hear someone say, "slavery was years ago, can't you people just get over it?", I have the awful urge to reply, "Jeez, this Jesus dude died 2000 years ago, can't you Christians just get over it?"

Naughty but I do think it.

That puts a lot into perspective. Doesn't it? Haha

Someone else mentioned racial tension between people of the generally same backgrounds. Why is that?

I have heard that there is even hatred and racism between ligher skinned black people and darker skin?! I don't get it?

I think racism goes both way. I am multiracial but it doesn't show... so I am Caucasian. when I say "we all bleed. who cares what color we are. So what?" everyone looks at me like I am a freak of nature.

OK. The only real difference I see is those not Caucasian/white don't burn as fast... or as obviously. It sounds like a blessing to me. Then again, it's no different than having thicker hair and having your scalp burn less. it is just another thing that varies int his world. I so am bad at explaining. OK. basically. we are all people. I see no difference that is different. make sense?

Besides, in my area, we have a bit of an opposite problem. It is white people who are discriminated against... not everyone else. However, when someone stands up and says something, a racial group jumps on them because they share a skin color.

It isn't just the "white man" you know. it is people hating people because they have something different about them.

I say. KKK needs to go, along with every other racial group, because really, they warp and become the same thing.

"That’s why Tah is telling, will tell her son what he needs to do when stopped by the police."

Actually, Tah's advice is the same advice parents should give any teen age boy. In these days of gangbangers, meth addicts, and so on, cops are particularly wary of young men who speed or otherwise break the law. Yes, her advice helps counter the effects of DWB (Driving While Black) but it is also simply excellent advice.

I think there must be something in the human gene that likes to generalize. Therefore, if one person with certain physical attributes does something bad, then the brain likes to categorize that type of person including the physical aspects.

Here’s what I do: I teach my children to keep an open mind. If someone is disrespectful to my kids – besides dealing with the issue –we talk about it being a personal problem belonging to that individual.
We talk about situations in which they see racism. My kids are even shocked if someone says, “Was he black?” because in our family we don’t normally discuss the color or skin, or the weight, or looks of people when sharing our day, and our experiences. I would say, don’t just model the behavior you want to see, but talk about the world and what’s happening, and how to “check yourself” so that you don’t fall into the same inappropriate and unfair habits. And as Soeul Sista pointed out – talk about the history of racism in our country, and how far we’ve come and how that change was accomplished.

While at work, a co-worker made a racist remark – saying “they are like that.” I pointed out several other co-workers who fit in his “they” group, but don’t behave in the same way. So, no, “they” are not “like that,” only this one person is “like that.”

I think we can politely make our point. It really helps to stay calm and just point out errors in their assumptions. Point it out when someone is generalizing a physical attribute.

In terms of racists cops and judges, that is a problem I don’t know how to address. Perhaps sharing stories so friends and relatives are aware, and writing to representatives? (Such as representatives in state or federal government depending on the situation?)
I don’t really know.

To answer the OP’s question
My thoughts are this: Really!!!!??? It’s almost 2012 for crying out loud (this is being taught somewhere right now). It also amazes me that people who are genuinely nice and caring wanting to live by the teachings of Jesus read the same bible as folks that remind me of the KKK and the actual KKK…interpretation is a bitch.

And now to add my two cents There’re many good statements/topics/stories to hit up on….don’t know where to start .

I don’t think racism will ever go away..some people are stuck in their ways; are oblivious to what happens or is happening.

Often my SO and our youngest sons God Father, along with his daughter (my niece) and my older son go out to eat. Well we were at a burger place called Fat Burger the inside has a 50-60’s decor to it with a juke box…ect
As we were eating I said “only so long ago we would not be able to sit here here peacefully IF we even were able to sit in here”

For those who don’t know My SO is Korean, my son’s GodFather is White (well he is of Irish and Norwegian decent) and I Black.
So yes we have come a LONG way but have even longer to go

As a black person (BTW im actually brown..like milk chocolate) I have many stories..not all are woe as me, but that is because im one of the lucky ones I would say. Now I do have family that has some outrageous stories that are upsetting to say the least.

The earliest I can remember facing racism was in the 4th grade at 9 years old. I was told by a group of girls that they boys did not want to play with me(many of the boys were in my class) because I’m black…that’s why everyone stopped playing when I joined. I did not understand..literetly. My father never told me that something like that could happen..and maybe that’s because he thought It wouldn’t to me..IDK I did cry, but only when I got to the bathroom; stayed till the end of recess. Luckily they were never openly mean to me..they just avoided me like the black plague…im sure it had much to do with their small minded parents.
But because it happened at such a young age that changed me view on how white people see me AND that is also why I will prepare my son for something like that…I should not have to, but I don’t want him caught off guard like I was. That’s why Tah is telling, will tell her son what he needs to do when stopped by the police. All I should have to say is..keep all your info at the ready when pulled over.

A girl who I considered my BFF at the time said to me the only way I could spend the night at her house was if I took a shower…that was the rule of her mother (mind you after playing with her for months (we both lived in the same apartment complex…they were half a block apart) I could never come in and she could never come in my house because of her mother and then it was finally a yes but I had to take a shower. I was 10 almost 11 and at that age I took pride in doing my own hair, putting on the nicest clothes I could find, so I was not running around looking dirty for her to have that as a stipulation. I look back now and see why my dad was pissed and said I could never go to her house or the fact that her mother barely mumbled hi to me.

Or when I was in the 8th grade little did I know (until I was in high school) that the most annoying yet funny/nice redheaded guy in class had a crush on me!!
One day in the 9th grade (high school) he told me he would have dated me instead of my BFF, but his parents would not go for it…why because my skin was brown.

I have other stories of being followed around in stores (racial profiling) and just racist

There is racism all over I know that..Mexican’s and the Blacks, Blacks and Asian’s so on and so forth, BUT none have a history like the Blacks of this Country do... we are THE only race brought here against our will. Many of us don’t know what part of Africa we are from because our ancestors were forced to forget..they were made to change their name and learn the English of the time

Im sure many cannot name 5black inventors off the top of their head unless they “Google” it and yet you can name many White inventors….why is that, our ancestors helped build and contributed to this country and many more would have had they not been seen as animal with no real feelings, no soul.

Or the fact that you don’t see many leading roles with a minority (unless of course they look white) as the hero or in the commercial. ALL of my son;s PS3 games have the White hero..none are of dark skin complexion unless they are the sidekick.

My son’s GodFather is a speed demon in his car. I don’t know how many times he has been pulled over and let go (by white officers) when he was clearly speeding. He as a fast car (a 2000 something Acura) and cant resist the urge.
He has told us the stories of the white officers letting him go..its amazing..A.Mazing and he knows its because he is white..he will tell you.

@ Tah...I have a similar experience in many of my classes...I'm not saying that racism wasn't involved in your instructor's treatment; but, as a young white woman, I have been treated very much the same as this by many different students. It is frustrating, as a woman, to go into a classroom, and be treated like a child or a joke. I worked hard to get where I am; just as hard, if not harder than the men. Sigh...we have such a long way to go in so many ways...

There is a common cognitive error known as the "us vs. them" fallacy...Some theorists believe that this IS a hold over from early human evolution. If we need to trust those around us to survive, then others would naturally be suspect. The problem is, that in this day, we should all be capable as defining "us" by the human (or even natural) world...and recognizing that there truly is NO other...We are a long way from there. Please understand that I do not mean "a color blind society" would be a good thing, should be encouraged, or is even possible. I mean that WE are all we've got on this planet. We need to work together, whatever it takes if we are to continue being successful as a species...that is all...

I had a young black professor for my anatomy class, there were some young white girls who would not shut up..I mean they were blatantly disrespectful to her. I had other classes with them and were NOT chatty kathys in biology, psychology or sdv class but then our professors there were white men. They were angels in their classes...so when the anatomy teacher finally asked them one day to quiet down...they had the nerve to ask her what qualified her to teach that class..I was floored and she was as well, and by the gasp and looks in the class, we weren't the only ones, I guarantee you they didn't ask any of the other professors for a resume the same way they didn't blatantly disregard the fact they were there teaching by giggling and laughing and talking the whole time.....

I am discouraged at the thought it will ever get better. I just don't see it. I am encouraged to see ladies on here such as yourself wanting to know, wanting understand, but I am hit in the head by reality when others come on here and tell me it doesn't exist when I have watched a innocent black man go jail after the victim of the crime said, no it wasn't him, after witnesses said he had left the area hours prior, when one of the people who DID do the crime said, no he wasn't there.. Then the judge turned to that young man and said.."you are a menace, 20 years, serve no less than 5"...I am discouraged when I see people pulled for driving while black. I am discouraged when I see beautiful white young ladies you spew the propaganda given them with no desire to educate themselves or to walk a mile...I just do my best to teach my children how to live in the world we have.....

It IS discouraging, Schenkers. Part of me wonders if it's human nature to distrust "the other". Maybe some anthropological tic left over from the early days of mankind.

I think that even optimistically, the furthest we will get as a society will be to at least accept that prejudice is wrong. People will still have prejudiced thoughts and feelings. That's never, ever going to go away. But hopefully we'll get to the point where those who DO have those feelings will recognize that much like hate, or jealousy, or any other negative emotion, it's not a good idea to indulge that emotion and let it dictate your behaviour. You acknowledge it, you ask yourself why you're feeling that way, and then you deal with it.

I think that part of society's problem lately is that people are so hung up on having the right to say whatever they want. We've turned into a society of children -- unable to control our impulses and unwilling to install a filter between brain and mouth. And I always contend, just because you have the right to do something, that doesn't make it the right thing to do. We need to accept that maybe we need to sometimes just shut our yaps and behave like grownups.

Okay first for those of you who do know me, I'm in NO WAY, brushing off the racism from some part of white America towards black America. The personal stories are horrific, I'm not oblivious to any of it, I've seen it first hand from some of my friends growing up and now as an adult. And on the flip side, I've also seen racism personally towards myself from black people. And I state that because I haven't really been a big part of this convo so far, so I don't want to appear to be brushing it off and going on a different branch of the racism tree.

But, anyhow, the point I was getting to is Karla's question of "Really though, what can society do about this problem? " - I always ask myself this. I mean I feel like we've come far as a society against racism and prejudices but, my God, we've got a long way to go. Do we really have to wait for it to be this painstakingly slow process? What really is the answer...

Another thing I was shocked to learn and didn't know it until I got on CoM and talked to *some* Canadians, I was shocked that some of them HATE the French Canadians. :/ they would rather they go back to France too. - Seriously shocking some of the stuff I heard. And at the same time these people would be appalled by the white/black racism they hear of in America.

And then there's racism between Puerto Ricans and Mexicans and so many more instances. There really is just so much to contend with with it comes to racism over all. Sometimes it can feel hopeless and I can't imagine being in one of the minority races and trying to overcome everything. I think as much as I can sympathize and understand, we who aren't in the midst of it, can't truly understand. And that's where I wish people from the far side of this could see that. There's just such naivety and lack of compassion in this subject. In the end, I find I'm always at a loss on how to combat it and it gets discouraging.

@Chatty: This thread has been an eye-opener for me as well. I like to think that I'm fairly sensitive to race issues, and I know damn well that we still don't have true equality.

But it's one thing to know that in theory and it's quite another to actually hear some concrete examples of how some people STILL think that whites are just plain better than everybody. I've been pretty sheltered all my life, and never really witnessed racism first hand -- my best friend growing up was Indian, and it was a complete non-issue for everybody.

It just makes me so sad and angry that some people still delight in treating non-whites like shit. I'd like to think that this will change with coming generations, but...parents teach their kids to be racist. No child is born racist. It's learned behaviour. And I just get really depressed when I think of a sweet, innocent loving child being taught by his parents how to have hate in his heart.

Okay, wow was this a fiery topic! I'm not sure anyone will be able to catch up, and it's likely that what I am about to say will have already been mentioned...for my sake I'll mention it anyway.

Nichole google WILLIE LYNCH LETTER: THE MAKING OF A SLAVE

Also, I am in no way defending racism. To me discriminating against people based solely on their race is ignorance, which I have a very low tolerance for.

However...let's put it this way...

There is a child in a large school. The majority of the people in this school hate her. They pick on her, the abuse her, the spit at her, they hang her friggin cat! They degrade her, they call her names, they won't let her sit at their table, they won't let her participate in anything everyone else participates in. They make her clean the bathrooms, they feed her false knowledge, or don't teach her at all. This goes on for years.

By the time she is finished with school, this girl is broken. How do you suppose she will ever be able to build herself up again? No one is there to support her, she must support herself, encourage herself, inspire herself. She must do this alone. Gathering her former school mates to do the job is impossible, they didn't want her to succeed before, and most of them still don't. She has to be out for her and her alone.

There are many Poles who came to Texas in the 1840's and settled in the Texas Hill Country. My daughter's birthmom is a descendant of these settlers and the Germans who settled near by.

My grandfather served as a translator in Poland for American forces during World War I, but that is my only direct connection to Poland. His father emigrated to the USA from Germany in the 1890's.

My dad, his parents and two younger sisters emigrated to Canada from Poland when he was 8. That's why I asked.

OMG Jane, Dyngus Day in Buffalo is a major event. Go look up Dyngus Day on wikipedia and you'll see we're featured heavily in the article.

Dyngus Day, huh? We have a lot of Poles in our area, but no one celebrates Dyngus Day locally. You learn something new all the time.

And another argument in favor of the various history months is that White History month occurs 12 times every year, so what is the big deal in giving up a few of those months for the other groups that make up the USA?

And I like your idea about that Jesus dude.

Oh and one last thing (promise). Everytime I hear someone say, "slavery was years ago, can't you people just get over it?", I have the awful urge to reply, "Jeez, this Jesus dude died 2000 years ago, can't you Christians just get over it?"

Naughty but I do think it.

Tossing into the mix here. In my area, there are various festivals in the summer. The Irish Festival. The Italian Festival, The Greek Festival, The Polish Festival, The Macedonian Festival . Plus there are HUGE St Patty's Day and Dyngus Day festivities across the region. Notice they're all white. Yet whenever Black History or Black Pride week/month comes alone, there's a huge flurry of letters to the editor that it isn't fair. That it's reverse racism because there's no White Pride month, happily ignoring all the above because it doesn't have the word White in it. IMO, Black Pride cannot be broken down into the various areas of Africa as most white's break down their ancestry because simply not enough is known. Therefore a culture and a pride of identity is left to a skin color. I see that as sad because it focuses on that difference alone. I also dont' see a solution to that without access to a functional time machine to see where each person's ancestor originated.

I have to admit that this thread has been very eye opening for me, so thanks.

I think the reason some people get upset that there's an NAACP and not a comparable NAAWP is that they don't understand why the organizatoin began. We live (USA) in a predominately WHITE culture. I challenge those who do not think that systemic racism still exists to watch a major network for a day. Make a tally of who many shows and commercials feature whites vs anybody else. I'm a video game fiend as is my son. Every single one of the games we have feature main characters who are white (whenever they're human). Look at all the major motion pictures released in 2010. How many starred whites vs blacks? And of those black films, how many were comedies that portrayed blacks in a very specific light?

When you realize that throughout media as liberal as it's accused of being, white is still dominating, I don't see how anyone can suggest it's still not systemic.

I doubt the graffiti artist was aware that Africa is broken up into countries, much less that one is named Niger.

The worst was someone who spray painted the word "Niger go home" on fences and houses in our neighborhood.

A couple of years ago the KKK tried to have a march in our town. About sixty people showed up, all of whom heckled the Klan members. The Klan cancelled the march and left town.

OTOH, the MLK day march and the Juneteenth events are always well-attended by folks of all races.

This is a southern town with a population that is 33% non-Hispanic white, 4% non-Hispanic Black or African American, and 60%
Hispanic, Latino, or Spanish origin (they may be of any race). There is no longer a "black" part of town.

So something good is happening here at least. We have run into some prejudice, but relatively little. The worst was someone who spray painted the word "Niger go home" on fences and houses in our neighborhood. And yes, that is how they spelled it.

I find these stories of racism happening today amazing. I really live in a bubble, okay not literally, but I knew there was still a problem with racism, I just didn’t realize how often it's been acted on. (I’m going to crawl back in my bubble now…)
Really though, what can society do about this problem?

In this country we have a very large NAAWP (it's called the US Government, institutions, economic system, education system...should I go on).

One of my students told me yesterday about a "driving while black story"...Her daughter came to visit her for Mother's day and was pulled over for being black in a white neighborhood with Mississippi plates. The cop told her that "people like you need to keep your mouth shut while talking to the police in this town"...I wish that I didn't believe that every word of her story is true, but, I do...

Breitbart was also involved in the 2009 ACORN video controversy. Hannah Giles[43][44] posed as a prostitute seeking assistance while James O'Keefe portrayed her boyfriend, and clandestinely videotaped meetings with ACORN staff.[45] Subsequent criminal investigations by the Brooklyn District Attorney's office and the California Attorney General found the videos were heavily edited in an attempt to make ACORN's responses "appear more sinister",[46][47][48] and contributed to the group's demise.[49][50] Breitbart then provided a forum for O'Keefe on his BigGovernment.com website[51] and defended his actions on Sean Hannity's Fox News Channel program

@Jennifer – “So did you file a complaint? Has anyone tried to get the state attorney to investigate?”

That was precisely my point when I said “When everyone feels safe in reporting race-based discrimination and violence cases we will have progressed.” In all cases of racism with discrimination or violence the victim does not feel safe reporting it. At school there may be retaliation, in the community the cops “friends” may retaliate,” at work, again, retaliation. Whenever I’ve heard of acts of racism the victim did NOT want to report it. They were afraid of what more might happen if they did. This is a HUGE aspect of the problem.

Even though the book “Black Like Me” is set in the 50’s, I really think you would benefit from reading it. Many of the issues from the 50’s still affect us today.

Also, I do know of a petite white girl who was bullied by blacks on the bus (because she was white), neither she or her mother felt comfortable reporting it – they thought the school system would think their family was racist, and they feared any punishment of the instigators might lead to a worse situation for the victim. I don’t remember how they resolved it. Point being the fear is there no matter the situation or who is involved.

@Jennifer, you say "I don't think Andrew Breitbart is anything but a respectable guy. He wasn't the one being inappropriate or making up stories to slander someone else to try to take the heat off."
Andrew Breitbart posted an out of context statement from a speech by Shirley Sharrod. His actions were not respectable, and he was the one being inappropriate and making up stories in an effort to slander the NAACP. How anyone could call him respectable is beyond me.
The only reason I mentioned him is that his efforts to defame the NAACP brought Shirley Sharrod to MY attention. Her speech is excellent. I would love to sit on the porch with her and ask her more about her experience. Please take the time to listen to her.

No. Not at all. He only heavily edited a video to show out-of-context comments that got a woman accused of racism and subsequently fired. He's a stand-up guy, our Andrew.
