18 Month Old Afraid of Potty

My son is 18 months old. I've been getting him used to the little potty we have. He is fine sitting on it with his diaper on but as soon as I take it off he cries. After sitting on the potty for a little while he has marks on his bottom. Do I need a different potty? I don't know if it's hurting him or not. He shows signs that he's ready but he's scared of the potty. If I catch him trying to go #2 and put him on the potty he'll hold it until he gets a diaper back on. I'm also thinking about buying him thick toilet training underwear (not training diapers) so he could feel he's wet. Any advice would be helpful.

I've heard that its alot eaiser to train them in the summer. I worry when hes got his clothes off that he will get too cold. My son is 2 next month and every time he pees in the potty, he thinks hes been bad? I try to encourage his as much as poss, even bought him pants with cars on them. No matter how much i remind him he still seems to pee them ! ahhh lol x

Thank you for commenting. I want to train him now because I don't want a three year old in diapers. We are expecting our second baby and I prefer only one in diapers at a time. :) I'm just not sure why he's afraid of the little potty. He plays with it when we are in the bathroom but as soon as I take off his diaper he cries. Maybe it's that he's not used to having his diaper off. As soon as it gets warmer I'll allow him to go without a diaper for a period of time to try to get him used to it. He seems a little attached to his diapers already. We are weaning him off the pacifier right now (second day!) and after that is done with we will be very focused on potty training. We're gonna take him shopping very soon for some big boy undies. :D

I can tell you that having the thick training underwear is a great idea. I bought them for my granddaughter and it made the world of difference in her training. I am her caregiver every day for 11 hours a day, 5 days a week. I had started training her at 18 months and she was doing great after 2 days but her mom didn't want to push her. When she finally started again at the age of three it was much harder to get her going on the potty. The underwear made a big difference since she could feel the wetness.
As for the ring on his bottom, that is not painful. If your hubby sits on the toilet for any length of time you will see a ring on his butt too. There are soft seat rings you can put on the big toilet for him if you are worried about the ring.
Good Luck on the training and don't be afraid to keep it going. It is better to keep it going now than to wait until later. They are VERY TRAINABLE at 18 months.
