Potty training

My almost 4 year old son refuses to poop sitting on the toilet. He will only poop if we let him use a pull up. He says it will hurt if he sits down. Any ideas?

It's hard for kids to poop on the toilet because they sometimes need something to push against. I would either buy a potty chair so he can push against the floor when he poops or there are certain types of step stools that are high enough to push against. Another thing to try would be adding some fiber such as yogurt with fiber or adding grapes/prune juices to his diet to soften his stools a little. My daughter also had a problem with hard stools & couldn't push them out on the toilet.
