Potty training special needs children

Does anyone have any tips for potty training a child with a kidney disorder? every couple of month's he seems like he has to start over with his training because he is hospitalized and put on medication to make him drain the fluid out of his system. So now, he readily refuses to even try. We are constantly working with him, while in preschool, or daycare, and of course at home, but he wont try and now he is coming to me after he finishes to tell me to change him. I'm getting frustrated. Ive tried positive rewards, and punishments, however nothing seems to matter to him. Does anyone have any further ideas, I would greatly appreciate another viewpoint.
