Potty training was going great, until when pooping the water splashed up and got his butt. Now he refused to poop in the toilet. He has no problem with pee, he just won't poop unless its in a diaper. Has this happened to anyone else? What can I do to get him pooping in the toilet again?

No, please don't take away what he has earned. He just shouldn't get anything as a reward for that experience.

I think Positive reinforcement is preferable to Negative reinforcement. Focus on what he does well, not what he does poorly. That's is just my personal opinion though, different approaches work for different situations/personalities.

On a different note, my son pooped in the toilet today! YAY! That might be because he simply could not hold it any longer when I sat him on the toilet. Regardless, we celebrated him pooping in the toilet! YAY!

My son went and pooped in the potty chair today for the first time. But turned around and potty in his pants later. So I told him he gets a sticker taken away that he got last 2 weeks for pottying ,. So do you thinks thats to cruel? Same thing he got his playdough set for popping should I take it away if he goes in his pants again?

My son had this problem that went on for ages. I was told to make the toilet look fun eg stickers ribbons etc so its does not look so big and scary. Never got round to doing it because one day I ran out of nappies and he really needed to go. After he had done the deed I let him phone family to tell them what a big boy he was. Hope this helps.

Don't anyone feel alone in this. I have been potty training my fourth and final child for a year now. He will ask for an undie when he wants to be a big boy, he pees in the big potty with no problems, has been for a while now, even tells us it is time. However, when it comes to poop, I am ready to tear out my graying hair. He tells me he does not like to sit to poo, that he cannot sit to poo. He doesn't care if it is in a diaper or underwear. Bribary has not worked at all! Rewarding has not worked at all! Encouragment has not worked at all! I have tried all that I and my huge extended family can think of, most of which you guys have posted! I have come to the conclusion that little Mr Stubborn will poop in potty when he is ready and no sooner. He was stubborn about peeing in potty, too, at first! I think this is just a part oh his own little personality that drives me crazy!!!

I am having the same problem w/ my 3 year old. He's been peeing in the potty for over a year, but he hates pooping in the potty. He says he likes to poop in his underwear. We've tried bribery, we've tried rewarding him w/ a stuffed animal...he won't go. He will hold it for 5-6 days. We've finally started giving him Miralax. That just makes a BIGGER mess in his undies. Ugh! It's frustrating!

I bought a little basket and filled it w/ cheap toys, stickers, & candy to let mine choose a toy every time she poops in the potty. We are now on day 5 of potty training and she finally pooped last night on the "big girl" potty and it made a big splashing sound and she was so excited to get to pick a special toy because she pooped on the potty...

I would suggest a little potty because they don't use water.

Great idea! He isn't scaed of the toilet, just didn't like the water splashing his butt. That set us back, but maybe this little trick will get us back on track. Thanks!

I am just getting over the same thing, my son would hold it all day until bed time, cause he was still in night diapers, so I decided that there was just not going to be the option to go in a diaper anymore, so I put a potty in his room, and took him out of night time diapers and he tried to hold it for a couple of days, but I just fed him lots of fruits and fibery foods, and soon he was faced with no other choice but to poop on the potty, he freaked out at first, but once he did it, we made a HUGE deal about it and he got really excited, and I reward him with a new book when he poops, (as he is obsessed with books) and he gets to phone Gramma afterwards too, and so far it's been two weeks, and he has been doing great. Now I get to start training my daughter :s thank god it's my last, lol

We had the same problem. We fixed it by making him sit on the toilet after every meal for about 30 min. And if he wouldn't do that, we would let it go until he would jump around from his "butt hurting" and go stick him on the toilet. If he pooped in his underwear we would make him take a night night or he would get something taken away. We also explained that only babies did that and we also did the bribery thing with candy or ice cream. after about 5 months we got it down. Now he goes all by himself. I hope this helps!

Here is a small idea that may help. Has anyone tried putting paper in the bowl first to eliminate the splashing back up of water on your child's bottom

i asked the same question and my son too will not poop in the toilet. one lady told me that she had her son attempt to clean himself making him believe that she wasnt going to help out anymore and he then from that day pooped in the toilet. i havent tried it yet but that may be the only thing that will work for my son. i have tried everything! your not alone :O) good luck

Bribery worked for me!! I know it's horrible.... but telling my daughter that she could have a piece of candy AND a sticker if she pooped in the potty worked!! Also telling her that babies poop in diapers and she wanted to be a big girl.... right?? Hope this helps! =)
