Toilet training my son this week

Hello I'm Bron; Aussie single mum of 4. I have toilet trained my two eldest children. My son (now 12) practically toilet trained himself around 2 years old. It took a week and he was out of nappies (using only the old style training pants for sleep time) and only a little while longer before he was 100% toilet trained. In all these years he has only wet the bed twice (once because he was sick and once because he was extremely stressed with a family break-up). MY daughter (6 years) took longer (but that was because we had a lot of tumoil in our lives at that time; i was pregnant and then we moved interstate and then there was a family break-up) so she took a couple of months to be fully toilet trained (around 3 years).

The son that I am toilet training this week is almost 4 and I have had very little success with him. He can use the potty and toilet. He can tell me when he is going to do something and when he has done something but most times he prefers to do it in his nappy/trainers. So after trying a few different methods I purchased an ebook from ebay about toilet training in 3-4 days. I have made plans to stay at home for the next few days. I have stocked up on stickers & treats for rewarding him when he goes to the potty etc. I have stocked up on undies and towels. We have a range of activities planned (mostly indoor as it's raining); craft, reading, letter writing, baking, Wii, a movie and more. We are stocked up on healthy snacks and meals so that we don't have to go into town unless it's an emergency. The ebook says to start him off without clothes or at least without undies but as he has some control I have him in undies and singlet and t-shirt and we will see how he goes. I am using a timer too to remind us both. My daughter will be helping out too (as I also have a 10 week old baby that needs attention).

I'll check back in to reprot our progress. We are making this out to be a fun time too :)

Quoting Darci:

How did your week of potty training go? I am planning to do a similar method starting tomorrow with my son who is almost 2 1/2 years old.

It went fantastic :)

On day 1 he had 2 accidents in total.

On day 2 he had a small dribble in his pants.

Day 3 we went out to town and he was going well until he started mucking up and that distracted him so we had a bad accident (luckily i was prepared). And since then there have been no accidents at all.

When he plays outside he asks if he can have the potty nearby still so I put it somewhere discreetly. He is still wearning sleep pants for nighttime but night has been dry for well over a week (since before we started the extreme training) so I'll be having him sleep without even those soon. I've also stopped putting down towels on the floor, chairs etc because he even stops playing etc to go to the potty or toilet on his own.

The thing that worked best for us was using the timer; as that reminded both of us but by the end of day one he wasn't needing to remind him; he'd go unprompted.

I kept the rewards up for as long as possible and by about the end of the 3rd he wasn't even asking for rewards.

On the third day i bought him another new pack of undies (ben 10) that he chose himself and told him that Ben 10 would cry if he went to the toilet on purpose in his pants so he's been very careful.

He's very proud of himself :) and so am i. MY 6 1/2 year old daughter helped out out a lot too. I'm thinking of adaptaing this method for other issues in the family too.

Good luck and keep us updated with your son's progress.

Progress so far (since 7 am this morning) .... one accident only (usually by now he'd have wet himself a couple of times). He's been to the potty when prompted and on his own. No #2s yet though....
