My son is 27 months, so just over 2 and still doesn't talk. He seems to be ready to potty train but I have no idea where to start. Of if he's even ready or if I'm jumping the gun. I have an 8 wk old too and kind if suck of diapers.

my son is 4 years old and still doesn't talk. we taught him simple signs to let us know some things like eat and that his diaper is full. he shows interest in learning to potty train and knows what he should do on it but he doesn't tell me he has to go before he goes in his diaper. he knows his own sign to let me know prior to going in his diaper but doesn't let me know. even though he isn't telling me in time i still take him into the bathroom to go even after he went. this way he can puzzle the action and feeling. i also have him join me in the bathroom when i have to go and have him go as well. this way he can go in the potty if he has to as well if he didn't want to tell me. i also give him a cookie or a little more juice than water in his cup for dinner if he tells me or goes potty in the potty.

just have to keep at it.

You can make signs for pee, poop, or potty. I used hand down in front = pee, hand down in back= poop. It worked until my daughter could say the words (at about 15 months). You should mention the speech to the doctor, he could have a hearing problem. But good luck!

Your son is ready to potty train if he is going long periods of time with a dry nappy, or is showing interest in the toilet or does not like having a dirty nappy on.

As for his speech then he needs to be referred to a speech therapist for assessment if he is not talking at all. In the mean time talk to him all the time and play lots of singing games over and over again on a daily basis. He should pick up sounds and words from this and want to join in.

Is his hearing ok. Sometimes children with glue ear or hearing loss have delayed speech. It is worth a mention to the doctor.
