How can I improve my 12 year old's self esteem?

My boy is very smart and he knows it. When it comes to approaching his friends, asking them to do things on the week end he is not so sure of himself. He finds an excuse whenever I ask him to call a friend and do something on the weekend. He prefers to stay home and play on his computer.
He doesn't stand up for himself in school when it comes to certain kids and certain professors.
I am very concerned about his behavior.

I am not sure if he's shy or not. He gives me mixed messages. He participates in the school play and he has the leading role. A shy person can't do that. But he is shy when it comes to approaching others. He is not an only child, he has a brother and they have a great relationship and are very close. And he has always been like that.
Concerning smart kids who give themselves more poo that the average person I guess you mean that they expect too much of themselves? With that respect you are totally right. He is too hard on himself and expects the best when he performs.
In general he's not very athletic. I always pushed him to do sports activities. He doesn't like team sports like soccer or basketball because if he's not as good as the others than he prefers not to play.

My son is only 8 but has similar problems - and is highly intelligent. I am sure you ar aware that highly intelligent people give themselves way more poo than the average person. I have no clear answer at present, but I will think on this and post again tomorrow :)

Is he shy? Is he an only child? Is this a new development? (Meaning, was he once more outgoing and now he's not?)
