I still had high/really high bp after delivery and was kept in for a week after giving birth so it was at least semi-stable. They gave me 200mg Labetalol (sp?) to take home. After I left I had trouble with it being high for around 1-2 months and then it just went down to normal and it's been fine since as far as I'm aware. :)

Yes, Im no longer on meds, but on any given day I can check and its never lower that 128/90. Usually the diastolic is over 100, so something weird like 130/100 or 120/100, very close together. I told my doctor and he seems to think 128/90 is good. but from what Ive read here even 120/80 is high, so what IS a good BP rate?? My son is 7 months old now and its still going on. When I pregnant it was 120/80, so its actually higher NOW than before! wonder what it was before pregnancy...

Hi Nara, That is high. I have had a lot of issues with my bp and had to stay on meds. Jesse is now 7 1/2 months old. I have to take my bp every morning. They told me if I have 1 day that it spikes but then goes back down the next day not to worry but if it is high 2 or more days in a row to call them. With the meds my bp stays down around 120/84 off of them it climbs pretty quick and is up to 150/100 in 2 days and keeps going.

well, i went to my general practitioner for the first time today(and i absolutly LOVE her! the last one i went to, i didn't like and never went back), and my BP was back up to where it was when i was put on bedrest :( She put me on BP meds- the safest should could find so that i can still nurse. she did say that it can be passed through the milk, but she told me what to look for and to watch kyndall. if all the things she told me look for start happening, we'll come up with another plan to help control my BP...

I know this old, but I haf my son in september and my blood pressure went up to 150/104 at 38 weeks I had swelling in my feet hands and face, they told me after I had him it would go down and was never really diagnosed with anything, after I had him I was on a mag drip and everything and my blood preasure just kept on tge rise, they finally relased me and that was the worst thing they could do I made a appointment with a nurse practioner and my blood pressure was 180/130 I was scarred to death and my vision was blurred I am three months pp now and take 30 mg of procardia once daily and 50 mg of metetoprol tarte twice daily and my blood pressure still runs a little high but controlled as far as I can tell I have never had high blood pressure always normal 120/80 unless I was dealing with my anxiety it ran a little high but not needing meds! Just curiose to see if this will go on forever or pass I am 24 years old and I don't want to have to worrt about it sky rocketing again :-\

Hi Kim, that's great that you like the new gp. That makes it so much easier to go to the doctor when you need to. Sorry to hear about the blood pressure problems. Hopefully they can get it under control for you. It is scary.

Hey Anna, our babies are pretty much the same age then :) I live in Barbados and the medical practitioners here can sometimes be pretty lapsidaisical, so I'll have to pester my doc on my ongoing high BP, thanks for the info!

hmmm...I'm so sorry that so many of you ladies had BP issues after delivery.  My BP was back to normal with meds when I was discharged 3 days after delivery.  I was told to continue on meds.  At my check-up a week later, my BP had bottomed out....80/60 and I was told to go off the meds immediately.  Since then, my BP has stayed unusually low.  It was 92/72 at my last doctor's appointment a couple weeks ago.  I did have HELLP and my BP skyrocketed but everything returned to normal farly quickly!

Aww, I'm sorry you BP is going crazy again. Thats no fun! I hope they find out whats going on and can get it under control soon.

I think I figured out what was causing my headaches-fenugreek. I was taking it so I could boost my milk so I could stockpile for when I returned to work. I looked it up online and found out that headaches could be a side effect. Once I stopped taking it, and it was all out of my system, my headaches stopped.

Sad to say that the blood pressure is on the rise again. Looks like it is time for another medication change. It was back up to 139/99 again this morning. How is everyone else doing?

Thanks Amanda. That was really sweet of you to call and ask about your meds. I just don't feel good taking this stuff. Last weekend my bp dropped a lot lower than it has been and I was really tired and dizzy. At first I was really excited thinking my body was finally going to start being normal again and maybe I wouldn't need the meds but my bp was back to being the normal high number on Monday.

I am going back to the doctor on March 13 and am going to ask to be switched to something else. I have decided that I am either losing my mind or this medication causes memory issues too. I have been having a horrible time forgetting the name of things or calling something the wrong name in the middle of a sentence the past few weeks. It is worse than when I was pregnant.

Hi Anna,

How frustrating and scary to still be dealing with your blood pressure this long after having your son. I was really concerned for you, so I actually called the pharmacy where I had my BP meds filled when I had my son (14 months ago) and got the meds and the dosages. I realize that different BP meds work for different people, but I just thought I'd mention them and maybe you can ask your doctor about them. My BP was still so high after giving birth that I remained in the hospital an additional 7 days while they tried out different BP meds before finding a combination that worked. After they found the right combination, I was only on them for 6 weeks and my BP was back to normal. So, the meds I was on were:

Hydralazine-100mg -1 pill 3x a day

Labetalol- 200mg- 2 pills 2x a day

I hope you find something that works for you & that you get to feeling better real soon.

I was on Procardia, Altenolol, and Catapres in the hospital and then down to only the Procardia 2xday. It is bad on the kidneys though so they switched me to Exforge 5/160 last week. My bp has been pretty high the last week and a half. around 140/100. It was 148/109 the other night and I called and had the docto paged since I was dizzy, really warm, had a headache and having eye problems. The increased the dose of Exforge to 10/320.

I was told it is rare but it does happen that women can continue to have high blood pressure after the baby is born. I was told that by the docor while I was in the hospital and again by a different doctor after the baby was born. It is rare but it does happen.

My blood pressure was fine before being pregnant. Here we are 4 1/2 months later and I am still having pb issues so I guess I am one of the rare ones.

can i ask which meds & at what dose you were prescribed for your HBP? i was just diagnosed with HBP after seeing my doctor due to headaches, dizziness & eye issues. my doctor prescribed me Lisinopril at 5mg & i was hoping that i would not need to take them long term, but my doctor said she could not confirm that i would or wouldnt have to. has anyone else taken lisinopril? if so does it seem to cause any problems for you or is it helpful? it also seems like both my OB & my regular physcian do not believe that my current blood pressure issues have anything to with the preeclampsia & HELLP, despite the fact that before my pregnancy i had never had any BP issues & always was well within the range of normal. i cant help but believe the complications with my pregnancy have to do with my current problems. i'm hoping that as my body continues to heal the meds will not be necessary, but i have not been given much hope that such will be the case :(

Unfortunatley the BP issues continue. It has been 4 monthes now and it is still high. This morning it was 129/100, better than last Thursday though. I have been trying to get ahold of the dr office to ask what I should do but keep getting their voicemail. I am thinking that the new bp meds aren't helping the way the should. I finally went ahead and took the Exforge.

With my oldest I had issues with my BP for about a month. They had me take some pills to help it.

well i went today for a BP and hemagloban check because of headaches and i had started bleeding again pretty heavly and they wanted to make sure i wasn't anemic. well, my BP was back down in the normal range and my hemagloban was pretty high so i'm not anemic. the nurse thinks the bleeding is just my first period after delivery. i started BC a week ago and since it introduced new hormones back in, it could have jump started my period.

Kim, I just happened to think, since the headache isn't controlled with medication could it be a spinal headache? Sometimes during an epidural or a spinal block a little bit of spinal fluid leaks out. It could come on right away or even up to 3 or 4 weeks after delivery. It is very painful but can easily be corrected. I remember a friend of mine talking about that and how horrible the pain was.

Quoting Kim:

while i was in the hospital after delivery it went back down, but i think it is back up because i am having horrible headaches-that even norco and vicodin are not curing- and some dizziness. I went about a week after delivery and it was higher than what i was running before the preeclampsia hit, but not in the danger zone. however, i called my doc earlier today and she told me to take it easy and come in on monday for another bp check.

Kim -

It's been a while, but I do remember having bad headaches for a few weeks after Anya was born....due to a still elevated BP.  Be sure to get plenty of rest, your body has been through a lot!  Give yourself plenty of time to recover and don't push yourself too hard!

Oh no, I hope they can do something for you for the headaches. Can you take your bp at home? We bought a computerized one and took it in to the doctor to be sure it was calibrated right and that we were using it correctly. Now I have to take it 2 times a week, first thing in the morning and then whenever I am not feeling right. If the top # is over 140 or the bottom # is over 100 I am supposed to call the doctor right away.

Two weeks ago I went to get my BP checked and it was 150/100 but, last week for my 6 week check up it was back to 120/80. The doctor said that it just took longer than normal to go back down. I'm still taking BP medicine once a day and have an appointment with an internist on Tuesday by referral of my OB just in case. I'm a little bit worried because my father had a stroke when I was 4(because of a head injury) and I grew up with a paralyzed father and I don't want that to happen to my son. Hopefully, my BP will stay at normal and I'm planning on starting an exercise routine, now that I can exercise again.

Jesse will be 4 monthes old next Monday. I am still on bp meds twice a day and that that keeps my bp around 120-130/82-86. The doctor isn't real happy with that. Without the meds it was going back up to 150/100. They want to try switching me over to something new called ExForge but I am really nervous about the side affects listed on their website.

I was on blood pressure meds for 6 weeks after giving birth to my 28 week daughter.  I had HELLP syndrome, but not overly "high" BP.  It went back to normal within this 6-week timeframe.

[deleted account]

My son is almost 18 months old. For about 3 months after I had him I had VERY high blood pressure. It was 140 or 150 over 100 or 110 all of the time. They put me on some blood pressure medication and no one acted that worried about it. Then again, they didn't act worried BEFORE when I was pregnant so don't know.

Even know my blood pressure has still not returned to my pre pregnancy levels of 90/60 but it stays at a normel level of 120/80.
