Consistant fussiness

Cody is 4 months now, and about everyday, like clock work, he has a 'melt down' around 5 with a lot of crying and fussing. Doesn't seem to matter if he's napping, eating or playing. If he starts fussing bad in the afternoon, look at the clock and it's probably about 5. Anyone else's child do this?? Why would he be doing this, and any suggestions?

My guess (and this goes my someone who I know who had the same problem with their son) is that he is probably being Overstimulated. It was something they had talked to me about since Zoe was always fussy after she was born. They told me that their son, without fail would start screaming around dinner time everyday...for about an hour....then he would be fine. I guess it was just his way of venting.

the arsenic hour is a known researched fact too.. my child NEVER had colic and it was never suggested, but when i was informed about this 'hour' by my health nurse and read the info, i was seeing what was happening every night being written on the screen.
I wouldnt be surprised if a lot of parents in this thread whos children had 'colic' had actually been a victim of this new development

Here is something i was told.. its called the arsenic hour.. most babies do it, and people dont realise why. My daughter did it when she was really young, around 6pm when we were trying to have dinner..

Here is some reading on the research:
The arsenic hour is that time in the early to mid (or sometimes late!) evening when our babies and young children can go from their previously placid, contented selves to crying, unhappy infants seemingly at the flick of a magic switch. It is not known exactly why babies have periods like this, but as so many have them, it may be important to their development.
Some people will describe these unsettled periods as your baby having 'colic'.

if you want to read anymore.. this is where i was told (since i live in australia)

My doctor recommended the 5 "s's". It worked like a charm for my very colicy daughter. Swaddle , sidelying, sway , suck and shhhhh. You haved to shhh louder than she is crying though. Let him nurse or give him a binky. Waddle him tight, lay him belly against your belly and swing him!!!

my 4 month o does the same thing and she is pretty fussy lately through out the day.. Our Doctor says, could be a number of things..teething..Colic..or just plane growing pains. I try to entertain her when she is fussy, distract her a bit with music or toys or a show. or carrying her around helps to. Also we have a rocker/vibration chair that helps alot! you can try massage after a warm bath some times will help relax and calm them down. I just go through everything untill some thing soothes her. Good luck!!

@ brandy have you tried Enfamil AR? That and Zantac helped a lot with the crying and spitting! The only thing that has completely fixed both though is Alimentum. It's pricey but its worth every penny to have a happy baby :)

My daughter does the same thing around 5:30 pm she starts. The only thing that calms her is nursing or sometimes the swing. She won't take a bottle and won't settle down with anyone but me. I'm still not sure what it is other than I think it is a combo of gas and colic. We also struggle with her spitting up so we have made an appointment with a GI Specialist. We are hoping this will help with the colic as well.

Sounds like colic. I've tried Colic Calm, works pretty good, only thing its black and it makes baby's tongue and poo dark, but washes out of clothes.

I've been trying the suggestions, and he's MUCH better. Probably a combination of being tired and discomfort from feeding to horizontal. Thanks for the tips!

sometimes it is just that they are tired. They have sensory overload from the day. We put my daughter to bed around 6 every night because of this and it has really helped

My son loves his playmat and anything with lights/ music. He also seems to like being rotated to different places (playmat, pack and play, swing etc.). Even to fall asleep he lives soft music and something to look at.

@cecilia did you mix the gripe water into the bottle? That's the only way we tried it because the does is so large.

Ava definately doesnt have colic but she does this every afternoon before her evening bottle - I have put it down to the fact that its coming to the end of the day and she's tired. Once she's had her bottle and has cuddles with me she's all good. I just distract her with toys or walk with her aroud the house and talk to her until she calms down.

Isabelle gets like that, the pediatrician said she has "evening colic", which is just basically gas. Some babies aren't colicy as newborns but tend to get colicy after 3 month.Isabelle isn't fussy everyday but the days she is in the early evening. She just needs some extra attention. I swaddle her and bounce her gently on a work out ball.the rocking motion soothes her and helps break up any gas she has. Mylicon gas relief drops help sometimes too but I try not to give it to her. Good luck!

oh, I forgot to add that for some strange reason gripe water did not help my daughter. She hated it for some reason.

I don't know why they always cry at the sane time with colic... And nothing but a moving car helped my daughter. Things she usually loved she hated. He should be outgrowing it soon but I would atleast try the gripe water. Cvs makes a generic. Also, from what I gave read reflux can also cause colic. Is his head raised when he sleeps? Maybe try that too.

I should add that he'd just finished eating a half hour or hour before, and that he eventually soothed himself sucking on his hand (he d/n to thumbs lol) and calmed back down.

Since I started burping him more and keeping him at more of an angle when feeding (just not straight across) he hasn't been fighting at feeding. Do u know why they'd colic at the same time? He woke up from napping yesterday crying. I feel terrible b/c I just left him... I've tried giving him a little more food, rocking him, playing with him (well as much as you can a baby - reading, etc) and nothing works.

I would say colic... My first was awful!! Like you said it was daily... Same time. With her the only thing that helped were car rides. Another thing I have heard works great (but never tried for colic) is colic calm or gripe water... Think they are the same. Gripe water is also great for gas and upset tummies... Better than drops. Before you also mentioned he fights the bottle too right?
