How many have started the Elf on the Shelf tradition? We got on board this year and it had it's pros and cons. My daughter was terrified of the elf at first and couldn't sleep the first few nights. Santa has written a few letters explaining certain concepts more in depth. He also wrote a letter saying the elf could stay a few more days, but has to be back by New Years. How have your children said goodbye? I know my daughter will be in tears so I want to make the transition as easy as possible. I was also thinking Santa could write a letter allowing the elf to come back on birthdays, holidays, and this year on the day the babies come home. Any thoughts on this?

I know this response is probably too late to help you out but anyway...We did the Elf for the first time this year and my son loved it. He had a lot of fun finding Bernard each morning. We told him from the beginning that when Santa left gifts on Christmas Eve that he'd be taking Bernard back with him but that Bernard would be back next year. We had Bernard write a message to our son on the easel in his room say that J had been a really good boy, that he had fun being his elf and that he'd be back next December.
