We use the Safety 1st basic one as well. I had a similar experience to Christina, where I can hear static at all times BUT I can hear in breath and that's comforting.(His monitor i across his room, and he has a big room!)

We never had baby monitors but the house is small so I can hear her when she wakes up.

I have Safety 1st (we had actually gotten a nice one from a friend but I opened my big mouth when she came to drop it off right after I had my son and I told her that I had gotten a cheap one, so she took it back. I'm still kicking myself and my son is almost 2..)



Anyway, we got just the basic Safety 1st monitor.. I really didn't care for that one too much. No matter what channel we had it on (a choice of 2 channels), there was still a lot of buzzing and it didn't work well and the maximum distance, either. A little disappointing in my experience.
