What age did you introduce your baby to the swimming pool?
My babies both went to the pool before 2 months. To teach them it is best to start early, because their breathing reflexes disappear after only a few months.
6 months for both of mine. I wanted them to be comfortable around the water, but safe. My daughter is 2.5 and is doing very well, she enjoys the water, but also knows to be safe around it. She knows to always wait for mommy or daddy before going in any water.
My son just started lessons. He is more or less getting used to the sensation of being in water. He was a bit weary the first time, but he just had his fourth lesson, and is doing extremely well.
Parent child lessons are more about teaching the parent at first than the child. I know I can now be safe in the water while holding my child.
I strongly disagree with the AAP saying to wait until 4 years. By then they are deathly afraid of water. For their entire lives their parents are telling them no don't go near water it is dangerous, you could die. Then suddenly plop they are in the water. It is scary, and I feel it traumatizes the child.
Mine at 6 mos too. but my pediatrician advised me not to submerge the head to avoid ear and airway infections:)
I started taking my daughter into the pool at 6 months old and she took infant swim lessons at 13 months old. We plan to do them again each winter (indoors at the YMCA) to keep her familiar and active with the water and to pass some of the time during those cold, boring months :)
