I love to go to the dollar store and see what kind of goodies I can find. I have included decks of cards {decorated with favorite cartoon characters}, little books, pencils, stickers and erasers. Anything small and fun that the kids can bust out at the tail end of the party when you're starting to lose steam is a great thing!

I don't like to include lots of lollies as both my kids are young, so I prefer a few bits and pieces that are exciting and age appropriate.

For Miss E's birthday party last year, we made bags with bubble sticks, a balloon (not blown up), party blower, chocolate frog, stickers and hair clips. For the boys, crayons & a small notepad, balloon, bubble stick and a Freddo. For the toddlers a bath squirty toy (we got a mixed pack from a discount store) and a mini board book.

I like to create a favor bar. For my son's second birthday, we did a party themed around a book. I used the book as a guide for what items to have and then let the kids choose what they wanted. Some kids take one of everything but others pick the things they really are drawn to. While I had some leftovers, I used those for my son's birthday treats for school. Or I like to have them do an activity at the party that they can take home with them also. For the same party, I scanned an image from the book, turned it black and white and printed them on my home printer on watercolor paper that you can find at any arts and crafts store. They used watercolor paints to paint their picture and by the end of the party, they were dry enough to take home.

I used buy lots of bits and pieces from the Dollar Store for birthday party goodie bags, but once I had made up 10 - 15 goodies bags I realized that I had ended up spending too much money on a bunch of things that would probably get thrown away.
I now think giving the children an affordable book as a party treat or birthday gift is personal and means more. We are big fans of the Mr. Men & Little Miss book series by Roger Hargreaves, and I like to choose characters that represent each guest; such as Little Miss Giggles, Mr. Bump, Little Miss Sunshine, Mr. Funny etc.
There is also Mr. Birthday and Little Miss Birthday for the birthday boy or girl…perfect!

My kids really look forward to getting their party bags, however they are more interested in quantity over quality! They've had what I consider to be really lovely gifts however they are really looking for sweets, chocolates and something they can play with instantly !
We made these really easy marble pouches as an economic party bag present - they were a big hit !
I've posted photos & 'how to ' on

I've got 3 girls & 1 boy, so we're all over the place with goodie bags. You'd think the oldest (13 & 11) would be over it by now but, no, they & they friends still love 'em. And they love getting...... socks! Crazy, wild patterned socks are always a hit. You can always find some fun options somewhere like Target, doesn't have to be expensive or fancy. Lipgloss or small nailpolishes are good, too. Costumer jewelry for the little ones. And rubber balls or small building kits for the boy.

My kids LOVE goodie bags. But what about moms? I've recently been thinking it would be great to include the gift that keeps on giving in their goodie bags....a small card for MOM that says this, "Dear sweet MOM, thank you so much for bringing (name)_____________ to ______________'s birthday party today. We're so glad you all could join us. To thank you I'd like for you to have these family conversation starters that you can use all year long together with your kids. We really enjoy them. Hope you will too. Here's the link: http://houseofthe4risingsons.blogspot.com/2011/02/conversation-starters.html "

My all time favorite party favor is an iced sugar cookie made to match the theme of the event. Not only do most people love a good cookie :) it is a safe alternative for party guests of varied ages, especially when wee ones are invited!

For my boy-girl twins' farm-themed sixth birthday party, they planted basil seedlings at the farm (to take home) and we handed out reusable snack bags, in keeping with the 'green' theme. Twenty-two different patterns since we invited the whole class & I didn't want to drive the teacher crazy! We loved ours from this Etsy shop: http://www.etsy.com/shop/MojaCreations?ref=top_trail

Love the TickleMe Plant seeds and the TickleMe Plant Party favor. The TickleMe Plant is a crazy fun house plant that 'Moves" its leaves and even lowers its branches when you Tickle It.
The video is worth sharing if you have kids or just love plants.

Stickers! All kids love stickers. It's are especially nice if they are related to the theme of party (trains, cars, Elmo, etc.). They are really inexpensive and the perfect size to stuff in a goodie bag.

I have two -
1) Bubbles - simple and hours of play. My son couldn't have a party this year so I purchased bubbles for each child in his class. I had parents thanking me for the gift for weeks.
2)PJ - let me explain because this one can be pricey - my daughter had a sleepover party with 3 friends, instead of buying "Goodie Bags" I bought each girl matching pj's. The pictures I took were cute and each girl has something that will remind them of the night for at least a year...more if they have a younger sibling.

I love to include traidtional toys in a goodie bag. Either a small car, doll, toy watch, balls, and those toys that remember a simple childhood. Most of those things can be bought at a Dollar Store, or Specialized Toy stores that have those old-fashioned items.

We like to pack a craft kit in our party goodie bag. If there is time,we make a craft gift together and the kiddies take it home with them. Otherwise, we make a sample and show them or let them make whatever they feel like.
Eg: a packet of beads, elastic and a charm
or a paper doll kit we drew and made copies for each child
or a paper weight kit with a pebble, some wire, a glow in the dark star and some stickers
or a flower kit with some seeds, a flower pot, soil in a bag and instructions

If this is for another mom, then my handmade soaps are one excellent item to include! This soap is very moisturizing to your skin. It is also a v-e-r-y hard bar so it will last a long time without becoming mushy, making this a good economic value!
You can purchase these soap bars through the Mae's Soap tab along the top of my blog.

Another item would be a unique flexi clip to help the mom do her hair quickly, easily and with style!
