When you need a good laugh, where (besides your own blog) do you turn?
Dave Barry. Or Cops reruns. Those methed-out public nuisance calls? Comedy gold.
Of course, I also turn to my blog roll.
It depends on the exact kind of laugh I need. I have some great friends who can always make me laugh. My kids make me laugh if I let go of any grown up hang-ups. Then there are my standby blogs, most of which are right here on your top 25 list. I count a number of these women among my friends and they can make me laugh no matter what kind of sour mood I might be in.
I seek laughter everywhere, every day. I surround myself with a husband who knows how to make me smile, crazy kids that constantly amuse me, friends who always have a great story to make me snort coffee right out my nose.
Online I follow people whose Tweets are some of the best one-liners around, Facebook posts make me nod my head in insane solidarity, and blog posts have me falling out of my chair literally LMAO.
Life can be tough: This is something I know for sure. So why not make a point each day to laugh when things are awful, seek out joy when you're not feeling it, reach out to others and straight-up ask for them to cheer you with a giggle?
When you make sure the laughs are all around you, you've got a nice cushion of joy when you need it most.
My kids. They are proper bonkers and they always, always make me laugh. And anything written by David Sedaris.
gawd, i hate to admit this, but i can always turn to my dipsh*t husband’s dumb blog for a good laugh. he actually started it in retaliation to mine...he was always complaining that “tulip and thelma” made him look like an a-hole (which he is), so i jokingly dared him to start his own to tell his side of the story. well i never thought he’d have the balls to do it, but he freakin’ did: www.mywifelies.com. the whole point is to make fun of me, but i gotta admit, it’s pretty damn funny. just don’t tell him i said that.
When I need to laugh there are lots of places I can turn. I usually start with the Hubs and my kids. The Hubs is seriously funny and my kids are at the age where they've always got a stupid knock, knock joke for you to hear 100 times. When I'm ready to stick forks in my eyes from the incessant knock, knock jokes, I turn on the TV and watch "The Daily Show" and "The Colbert Report" - those two can make the most serious topic funny. I wish I could do that instead of just rant like a crazy person.
If I'm in the mood to read blogs I like to read my fellow Funny Moms - The Underachiever's Guide to Being a Domestic Goddess and Divine Secrets of a Domestic Diva and queen of us all: The Bloggess.
My favorite funny authors are Tina Fey (of course), Chelsea Handler, Jen Lancaster and Celia Rivenbark - this lady is the funniest and sassiest writer out there. You must check her out. One of her books even has my favorite word in the title "Skank" I get hate mail once a week because I used that word and it wasn't even in the title so I can't imagine how much hate mail she gets.
I have two surefire sources for a good laugh:
1.) I tickle my youngest son (“Bucket Head”). This child is SO ticklish, he will actually crumple into a pile of giggles if I even crook my finger in his direction; and his giggle is truly the single most delicious sound I have ever heard. It is impossible for me to not laugh when he is having a tickle-induced giggle fit.
2) If I need a more adult laugh, I always call or text my brother. He is, without a doubt, one of the funniest people I know in real life. Bonus: I can always count on him to teach me new words and phrases that would make a sailor blush.
I love reading other funny blogs, many of my favorites are listed here on the Top 25 Funny Moms, as well as other funny writers, like Erma Bombeck.
There are really, truly, a number of other Top 25 Funny Mom bloggers I follow regularly. Seeing them laugh about the trials and tribulations of parenting, as well as savoring its sweeter moments, keeps me sane. Beyond the world of the internet, I really depend upon my husband and my kids to help me see the lighter side of things. It's hard to be sour about the mishaps of family life when there is so much humor value built right in! I always say, nothing in life is a waste of time if it makes a good story.
My high school senior picture. (Coincidentally, also where I turn when I need a good cry.)
My baby’s pretty damn funny. She loves to gasp and pretend to be surprised. It slays me. When she’s not available, I can always count on Trading Places, This is Spinal Tap and Airplane. If I’m in control of the DVR, I laugh out loud watching Happy Endings, Parks and Recreation and Arrested Development (re-runs). But if my boyfriend’s watching The Celtics, then you’ll find me in bed with David Sedaris, Nora Ephron or Chelsea Handler.
Other funnies: Joel Stein’s The Awesome Column, Steve Carrel’s tweets, Julie Klausner’s hysterical recaps of The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, Chris Rock’s stand-up and Bill Hader unable to keep a straight face while doing Stefon on SNL.
I also like knock knock jokes.
Chelsea Lately. I never miss an episode.
Other people's jacked-up kids and lives. For once, it's somebody else's "little angel" bathed in snot and desperation
My husband and kids! They never fail to make me laugh =)
As a person who needs to laugh on a daily basis, I have many places that I look for humor. My kids are hysterical (and they often make me hysterical, in every sense of the word). My husband is a real piece of work and when I actually listen to him, he is very funny. As surprising at it may seem, I love to sit behind my computer in my pj's AND I am social- meaning I have REAL LIVE friend! (I know!) Of course, they are all witty and hilarious. And finally, I turn to the League of Funny Bitches to make me snort, guffaw and pee myself a little.
I also love to watch people fall down. That probably makes me sadistic and I shouldn't admit that. Whoops.
I would say, hands down, that my eight year old daughter is one of the funniest people I know. ( although, my four year old son is creeping up on her!) She has the ability to make me laugh out loud several times every day, whether intentionally or not. Her sense of 'reality' is slightly skewed at times, so every once in a while she says things that are...unintentionally hysterical.
Twitter. I follow a lot of comedians. They provide endless reading material, better than magazines.
I have a philosophy that I can't go to bed until I've had a good laugh (well...that or a Xanax.) I used to watch M*A*S*H reruns every night before I went to bed but if it's not on I watch "Family Guy" or read "The Onion." I also love to read "People I'd Like To Punch In The Throat." SOOOOOO cathartic! And if I'm just looking for a "quickie" I go to @TheTweetofGod on twitter. "God" is pretty darn funny. Who knew?
If we are talking blogs, there are quite a few on this list that I regularly frequent. However, there are several others that are not included here – most notably, “Snarky in the Suburbs” and “Hyperbole and a Half.”
Generally though, I do not need to look past my own 4 walls to get a laugh – my 4 kids are hilarious. The 10 & 8 year old are funny in their own way, but the real giggles happen during conversations with the 3 and 5 year old.
Something ridiculous and funny happens in my family about every 11 seconds, so I never have to look far for a giggle. When the family's not around, and I spend quality time with my DVR, I laugh alone and out loud at several sitcoms including The New Girl, Modern Family and Bent. And, of course- Jon Stewart. We are in love but he doesn't know it yet. The Divine Secrets of a Domestic Diva and Mommy Wants Vodka are my two go-to blogs that are always good for a laugh.
Obviously *my family* cracks my ass up...they are my heart, my soul, and my inspiration for my blog itself. Not a day goes by that I don't laugh out loud MULTIPLE times with and at them. I am a firm believer that HAPPINESS IS A CHOICE! And dammit, I choose to be happy. :)
My two current favorite go-to blogs that make me laugh-so-hard-I-pee are:
Thoughts from Paris ~ http://thoughtsfromparis.com/
Lighten Up! ~ http://lightenupweber.blogspot.com/
My current favorite TV shows that I find hilarious are:
Seinfeld (gotta go old school here...maybe my favorite sitcom EVER)
Scrubs (ditto - an oldie but goodie!)
Funniest movies I've seen recently (and for me this means within the last few years, sadly):
Tommy Boy (Hahahahaha! Seriously my favorite movie of ALL TIME, though ancient. :)
Funniest/Favorite YouTube clips: (search these bad boys)
Santa is a Gangsta
Toyota Swagger Wagon
D*ck in a Box
That is all.
Typically, I find laughter halfway through a bottle of wine.
Unfortunately there are usually tears by the time I reach the bottom, so that never works out so great.
Ok, that's untrue.
I find the most laughter in my home. My husband and my children crack me up. We have a unique, quite possibly demented sense of humor over here. Now don't tell them I told you, but my family is actually WAY funnier than I.
Truth be told, without them I would have nothing humorous to blog about.
So basically, I steal their shtick and VOILA, I have blog fodder.
See how I went from Yiddish to French within one phrase?
I'm worldly and smart like that.
Other than laughing with (or at) my family, I would have to say that I look for comedy everywhere I go. I seek in out in books, blogs, movies, on t.v and of course, in real life.
Laughter is truly the best medicine...and it's much cheaper than Prozac.
If I need a good laugh, I just ask my two year old son “What are you thinking about?” The things that come out of his two year old brain make me giggle every time.
My husband is hilarious. He's like my straight man. If you read my blog you can see just how cool he is about putting himself out there. Of course he knew what he was in for when he married the Queen of Over-sharing. I post pictures of him sleeping with stuffed animals in his armpits - he's GOT to have a good sense of humor.
I also have some great friends that are game for anything. We get together and asshattery ensues.
There are many blogs in the Top 25 Funny Moms list that I visit regularly. This is one funny group of ladies.
I have an incredible support group made of fellow bloggers and friends on Facebook. No matter what kind of day I'm having, one of these people will be able to relate. Just going to any one of their blogs or Facebook pages will turn whatever mood I was in completely around. It is amazing how not-alone we really are in this crazy world! My husband and close friends are a huge source of comedy in my life - not to mention my three boys. They are good for a laugh or three at the oddest times of the day.
The Best of Kenny Powers from Eastbound and Down. Hysterical.
My husband and I are a little bit behind in the times. We JUST discovered that we can watch out favourite comedies online. I know, I know, don't judge.
Also, working at a radio station is very entertaining. My co workers make me laugh everyday. Mostly, I laugh at them, not with them.
I turn to Seinfeld. Or wine. Or both. Sometimes I look at my old race photos - those are always hideously funny.
