A good place to get ideas might be a site called freepatterns.com I look at all kind of web sites, books and things to get ideas.

There are SO many tutorials out there its amazing. I started sewing last Christmas and Ive loved every minute of it. Id say look around at thrift stores and Good Will as they will have cheap sewing machines (also look in the paper and craigslist). As for patterns, I dont use them that much as sometimes they are confusing but alot of people like them! You can pick them (patterns) up at Joannes when they are having a sale for as low as 99 cents each! Or you can search "Quilting tutorial" or "Cloth Diaper Tutorial" or even "free patterns"..Im telling ya, theres soo much out there! :)
I hope that helps, good luck, and please, email me if you have more questions, I LOVE sewing! :)
