I am a mom of three (14, 12, and10). While I was a SAM I still did residential and commercial commissions. I stayed at home until last year when I went back to work teaching Art at a local private school. In addition to teaching my art classes, I also teach fashion design at a local boarding school.
I have been sewing as long as I can remember. Around three, my mother would set me up with her antique hand crank Singer and I would sew along with her. My mom also started taking me to an old fashioned quilting bee when I was in 1st grade. I began taking sewing lessons when I was in 3rd grade. As a child I entered my garments and other creations into the local fairs. As a teenager, I started takng pattern drafting classes and advanced sewing.
As for my current sewing, I haven't done much quilting since my kiddos were young, but I have sewn a ton of apparel. I love the euro designs, vintage inspirations, and plan funky stuff! I do a lot of self drafting so that I can make exactly what I want. When I am using patterns, I stick to vintage, Farbenmix, Studio Tantrum, Ottobre, and Burda. I tend to avoid the "big five" because I want unique items.
I am also a member of Sewing Mamas, which is really a lot of fun! Great moms and lots of inspiration.
Fabric is a beast of its own! I have more than I will probably ever use, but I love every bit of it! I go to the LA garment district a few times a year and LOAD up on great stuff. There is also a small shop about 30 minutes north of me that gets millends from the production houses of high end designers (Gucci, Dolce & Gabanna, Versace, etc...). Best part is, her prices are amazing! Because I teach fashion and send my students to her, I pay a flat $4 per yard!!! I got the most gorgeous Gucci silk the last time and paid $4/yard!!!! This is by far my favorite store and I can dump a ton of money there!
Way too much about me!! I want to hear more about all of you! I would also love to help you with any questions that you may have.
Hugs- Shelly
