My 17 yr old daughter is half black, half white. She is experiencing racism at school. She has always felt very self conscious because we live in a mostly white community. I am consdiering a move and am wondering where I can find an environment of educated cultural diversity.

NYC! I live in a predominantly west indian neighborhood in brooklyn and they are very tolerant because west indians come in all colors and races.
There are also tons of biracial people in manhattan and brooklyn.

Some challenges of living in a mostly white area could be finding hair products or salons that know how to do her hair properly, finding makeup that matches her skin tone, etc. Maybe help her to at least travel to areas that may have beauty products that are suitable for her. I'm only suggesting this because I'm assuming that as a teenager she's getting into her looks.

I have a biracial daughter and I hate to say this but it seems like the best places she fits in (without the stares and sly comments) is in the urban areas. I dont receive too many comments from the "black" community and my daughter is a darker skinned biracial girl. But anytime I go to a predominantly white area alot of older people give negative attention.

I live in a small town in Ga and the experiences have not been good. I'm originally from Florida and I'm trying to move back there. At least in Tampa he does not get funny looks or stares. I hate Georgia. In my opinion, these are some fake religious nuts. They are so racist but yet they are so religious. LOL!

Honestly where ever you go your bound to run into racism. Just look for a place that is more culturally diverse. I live in Medina, Ohio and my kids are one of the few black kids in the class. They are mixed with white and black. The school has a higher population of biracial kids than African-American. Yet we aren't too far from Cleveland, which is widely diverse but the schools aren't that great. Again where ever you go your going to find racism so it's no real place to move to that is going to be equally diverse unless someone decides to create a city just for people who have biracial kids and that isn't going to happen lol.

I have 3 biracial daughters. So far we have expierenced limited racism. There are still times when we are out as a family and people look, mostly older. But for me, I don't care. It's my life. If I allow those people to effect me or my kids, then they win. My oldest is 15. She identifies herself as black. I have NO problem with that. It is her choice. She confronts racism head on if someone has an issue with it. She stands up for herself whenever there is an issue. My other 2 daughters are 12 & 9.....no issues so far. I will tell you the best multi-cultural community is a military community. We are Marine Corps and the military community has all ethnicities within it. It has been amazing for our family for the past 14 yrs.

I live in the deep, deep South. I had been living overseas for a long time when my child was born. We moved home when she was about 18 months. I expected to face some racism, but since I've been here, I've faced none. It seems like every other child I see at the local supermarket is biracial. Still, I know my child will be "typecasted" due to her race. I think I'd like to move to a place where she is unique so that people don't pigeon-hole her. If she stays here, I'm sure assumptions on both sides of the color spectrum will be made about her. But now you say you live in a place where people haven't encountered Blacks or biracials to form stereotypes about, and yet your daughter is being stereotyped and prejudiced against. Where can we go?

When you find a place that is more accepting, let me know and I'd gladly move there.
