my son is really a sweet boy, but lately has started hitting. not only with hands or fists, but with toys he does not want to share. i started off giving him a swift spank and telling him sternly "we don't hit", then i realized this was hypocritical. now what? he deliberately swung a bat at his 8 month old sister's head this past weekend!

One think that I find helps my son as well as the toddlers that observe at a childcare center is using positive talk. For example|: Instead of saying "We do not hit," you say, "use gentle touches" and move his hand gently on the person or thing that he hit. It will take a lot of repeating yourself and you may sometimes have to tell him... "I will not let you hit your sister" and move him away from his sister until he calms his body and decides to use gentle touches. I hope that this helps...

My son will be 22 months tomorrow and has started hitting too. I think it is just a phase because Bryce is a very sweet boy also.
