I was in the same position not too long ago. I found the BEST website www.bakerrella.com her ideas are so cool I did the elmo cake pops, They were a huge hit everyone was so intresterd in them I am still getting calls on where I got the Idea. The Best part about the web site is she goes through a step by step instructions. I made the cake and fromed the balls with the sticks in them a week in advance and put them in the greezer, so the day before I just had to dip. Best of Luck, I truly reccomend this ladys ideas she is so clever!!!!

I made cupcakes and arranged them on a tiered cupcake stand so it looked like a cake...we also did the same thing for our wedding cake! Works well, and the cupcake was the perfect size for my daughter to delve into.

It seems everyone has answered about the cake but I am thinking party...We did double duty for our sons by becoming members of the zoo along with these we got enough free admission tickets and parking passes to invite along 10 people and only had to pay for a few others...we had a group of us that went around together and a few who wanted to do their own things with the olders kids so we just met back for lunch at a designated time...made everyone happy we got a great memebership to use all year and had a party that was fun and a learning experience

you could do one with his pic on it that says happy 1 st birthday ( name of child) with balloons etc If you do this you will have to do it a few days before his b day and you take in your favorite pic and the scan it on the cake and yes it edible.the sky is the limit! just think of what little boys do bugs, dirt out door themes so many to list!!

You can make a lego cake..I made one for my sons 2nd birthday! Its really simple. All you use is 2 cake mixes (depending on how big you want it) and a muffin pan and a long pan. I made 2 small sqaure ones as well. I made each one different color to where it looks like We stacked them. I will attach a link next to show you where I got the idea from so you can see a picture. Now keep in mind I did mine different.

If you are a member of a Sam's Club, go there. I just got my daughter's birthday cake there. They have an option of a 5 inch cake surrounded by 10 cupcakes. You can choose themes of non specific stuff like balloons. It was only $9.83. Everyone could have the cupcakes and you could let your little dive into the 5 inch cake for all of the photo ops!

For my daughter's first birthday I made her a cake in the shape of a number 1. Then I had a cake pan to use for the form but it could also be cut out of a regular rectangle cake.

we did banana bread in a 8" round pan ( 2 layers) with buttercream icing and used those marshmallow bananas on top as decoration. It was simple not too sugary and looked cute.

One popular idea that works if there are a lot of kids there is cupcakes (no plates or forks). For boys, I love train cakes. You bake the cake in mini loaf pans and decorate them like train cars. Circus theme is easy, using animal crackers and oreos for wheels.
