I want to make my own sugar decorations for my daughters b-day cake. Butterflies and flowers out of sugar, or edible something :)
I don't have money to buy fondant or gum paste at the store. Home made recipes would be great if you have one, please share!
Also, I was thinking of rolling out some bubble Yum bubble gum and using that like fondant. Do you think this would work?

Thanks for the ideas Whitney. I decided to make some thick royal icing and pipe flowers. I wanted to make the decorations separate because I want to put bright colors, but not make the frosting too dark. Purple, dark pink, orange, teal and yellow. I will try to post a picture of the finished cake. I am making it this Friday night, wish me luck!

Hi Stephanie-
I get not being able to buy decos..this is what I would suggest:
using regular ol' granulated white sugar you can color it with food coloring. It's easy and way cheaper than buying it. I put the sugar in a ziploc baggie with a few drops of food coloring and roll it around to even out the drops and color the sugar. I cut stensils out of paper and lay the paper on the frosting. Then sprinkle the colored sugar on the cut-out. Remove the paper stensil and vola....hearts, flowers, butterflies, whatever.
I wouldn't use bubble gum just because I have not tried it before. You could see how it would work on something smaller..just to see what would happen. I think it would crack or not have to solid look of fondant.
