Tabasco - not too strong, won't make anyone sick or burn - just yucky enough to deem it not so fun to suck a finger, although one of my children did love it...........

I have a four year old who sucks his thumb and do not believe it's a sign of insecurity as he's been doing it since he was 3 mos. old. He was nursed until 11 mos. and has a very close bond with me and my husband. My pediatrician and dentist both said that he will stop when ready and the more that you try to get them to stop the more they will want to do it. I believe pointing it out to them makes it more of a security issue. I try to find things to keep my little guy occupied that keeps his thumb away that he is unaware of. So he's gotten to where he does it mostly on car rides or at nap/bedtime. Just hang in there, I am sure it will stop when she is ready. Have a Blessed week :)

well sucking of thumbs, pacifiers, hair, and in this case her finger, is a sign of an insecurity. I understand your concern for her teeth, but you have until she is 5 for this to be a real concern. Also, to start concentrating on this as a flaw will make it worse. Sometimes peer pressure will end it. Start watching when she does this. Is it out of boredom, is she tired, or is something bothering her? A chld that age is too young to really be able to give a detailed account of what is troubling her, if she even realizes it. Just be patient and try to give her things to do that will divert the use of that hand, without being overbearing or drawing attention to her sucking.
