Does anyone have any easy/cheap dairy free dinner recipes? I'm having to go dairy free due to my daughter being milk intolerant. We struggle most nights figuring out what to really have for dinner. I know it shouldn't be too hard but the same stuff every week is getting kinda boring, especially since I LOVE dairy! Any ideas would be AWESOME!

Spaghetti bolognese - you don't have to have cheese. We have found a couple of brands of commercial garlic bread that are dairy free or it is easy to make your own. Tacos, again, cheese free. Chilli. Stir fry. We had home made sushi for dinner last night - easy to make everyone their preferred filling without too much extra effort. Dairy free margarine and soy milk work fine in mashed potato and you can't taste the difference.

My boys are fussy and all have different likes but they all tend to eat the above meals.

Hi there,

My oldest son has a dairy allergy so I know all about the difficulties with dinner ideas. One thing my son loves is macaroni and hamburger... you cook up some ground hamburger (1-2 lbs) with onions and salt/pepper... once cooked, you had 2 cans of tomato soup (I use Campbells), then cook some macaroni (I use the Catelli Smart), and mix together. The whole family eats it... it is one of our favourites and I make it at least once a week. My son usually asks for it, so then he can take some in his lunch the next day. There are lots of things out there that you can use that are dairy free... Becel makes a margarine that is dairy free, it's Becel Vegan.. Shake 'n Bake original has no dairy. Hunts thick 'n rich (garlic and basil or original) is dairy free.

Hope these ideas help!

How about Dreamy, Dairy Free, Skinny Mashed Potatoes! I’m using reduced-sodium chicken broth instead! Their delicious flavor is also coming from cooked onions and a little Smart Balance Light. The skinny for 1 serving is 148 calories, 1.9 grams of fat and 4 Weight Watchers POINTS PLUS. http://www.skinnykitchen.com/recipes/dre...

I just posted a potato soup recipe. http://grandmasguidetolife.blogspot.com/...

Most of my recipes are dairy free because we can't have milk. And if a recipe calls for milk I just sub it with rice milk. It is best to eat fresh foods though because processed items have a lot of hidden milk in them since dairy is used as a preservative.

Hey Lisa, I have been dairy-free for a long time. I have quite a few simple recipes on my blog in the recipe section.

http://www.womaninreallife.blogspot.ca/

A lot of them are baked goods, because I love to bake! You can also check out my Wednesday posts where I show highlights of my meals for the week.

Good luck! I'm sure it will seem easy in no time. :)

We have severe dairy and egg allergies at our house. The first six months was hell until I relearned how to cook. Now we're much healthier. Go to the library or your favorite search engine for vegan recipes. You'll find all sorts of tasty stuff that you can add meat to if you wish.

Absolutely! Make an easy Shrimp scampi dinner. All you need is a dry olive oil blend dip mix and mix it with 1 cup of regular olive oil. You can use flavors such as Bruschetta, Puttanesca, Roasted Garlic & Herb, Tuscan, Pesto, or Greek and you have an easy and delicious dinner. Check them out!

We use soy milk as a substitue for milk in alot of recipes and we don't notice the difference. With french toast we add a bit of soy milk to the eggs and cinnamon and it tastes really good.
I have a macaroni and cheese recipe (minus the cheese) made with pureed carrots-
Cook macaroni elbow noodles
In a sauce pan wisk 1 cup of a milk substitue with 3 TBSP of cornstarch until well blended. Add a small 4 oz baby jar carrot puree, 2 TBSP of maragine and 1 tsp of salt. Heat to a boil, stirring frequently. It will thicken up nicely, pour over noodles. For extra flavour, stir in ketchup, mustard and hotdogs or cooked beef. We usually add a bit of ketchup.
We use soy milk with this recipe. Our son really enjoys it and he is not a vegetable eater.

They all do well in recipes, but for drinking straight or with cereal, etc. We all prefer the coconut milk. Check your local health food store. Most carry a half gallon size in the refridgerated section.

Thank you so much for the recipes and sites! I truly appreciate it. I have found a dairy free butter that is really good. Still haven't been brave enough to try the tofu and rice cheese yet. I haven't done too much soy. I only use it in my cereal so far and I'm not a big milk person with my cereal anyways. My husband is reluctant to use soy in recipes because he thinks it will be awful. Maybe I need to try another milk substitute.

Does one "taste" better or more like milk than another?

Check out Hillbillyhousewife.com, she has a lot of great (easy/cheap) recipes and many I noticed were dairy free, or can easily be substituted with rice, almond, or coconut milk. I would avoid the soy milk, as having too much soy in your diet can mess with your estrogen levels.
Tonight I made lentil soup with dumplings, it is on the site listed above. It calls for a 1/2 cup milk in the dumplings. You can eat it without the dumplings or substitute.
We eat quite a bit of fish with rice or quinoa as a side dish, no dairy there. I make egg rolls too, those go over well.

My son is allergic to egg, dairy & peanut, so I know how hard it is to try and come up with meals for a family as well as taking into account dietary restrictions! I have found that I have to make a lot of stuff from scratch, as most packets of sauce, jars etc have milk in them. If a recipe calls for dairy, I often substitute soy milk, or dairy free margarine instead of butter. We will still do stuff like tacos and my son has them without cheese. Vegan cheese can be hard to find, but we made a dairy free lasagne which was quite good. Look at Asian recipes ... Chinese, Japanese, Thai, Vietnamese as they often don't have dairy in them. My kids love sushi, sang choy bow, spring rolls, stir fry etc. Good Luck. PM me if you want some more specific recipes as I could write for hours on here lol!

Heather - It is me who is having to go dairy free because it bothers her since I'm BF. Sorry for the delay! I'm not too picky.

Dee- Thank you for the recipes. I appreciate it. Finding dairy free items has not been as difficult as I thought it would be. I have a friend who's son is dairy free, so she's been helpful as well. I've switched to soy milk and need to make a visit to our "organic" section within one of our grocery stores. We've just been making it work but I can tell my husband is getting frustrated...I'm blessed with a husband who LOVES to cook so he is typically the one who makes dinner!

A few years ago, my daughter was very ill with Ecoli food poisoning, it was difficult finding recipes at that time that were dairy free. I started a journal as I adapted recipes to fit her diet, as she was not allowed any dairy for nearly a year. We often had guests for dinner, they often complimented on dinner. There are many more non dairy food items now. Most all grocery stores carry a wide variety. There are lots of different veggie cheeses that are wonderful. Rice milk and others can be found across from the cereal aisle, if you can't find things, ask the store manager. Good luck to you. Any of your family recipes can be adapted. Here are some for you. :)

Chicken Broccoli Chowder
2 cups sliced carrots
2 cups water
1 1/2 cups chopped cooked chicken
1 (10 3/4) can condensed chicken broth
1 (10 oz) package frozen chopped broccoli
3/4 tsp salt
1/4 to 1/2 cup chopped onion (your preference)
1/2 cup ground oat flour (recipe below)
2 cups VitaMite 2% Lactose Free or Rice Milk
1 1/2 cup (6 oz) cubed Mozzarella Organic Tofu Cheese or Mozzarella Veggie Cheese
In a 4 qt. saucepan combine carrot, water, chicken, broccoli, onion, salt. Bring to a boil over medium high heat, reduce heat. Cover, simmer about 10 minutes. Increase heat to medium high to a gentle boil and add oat flour, stirring constantly, stir in milk. Reduce to a simmer, stir occasionally about 10 minutes. Remove from heat and stir in tofu cheese or other non dairy cheese choice. Cover and let stand 5 minutes before serving. Additional milk may be added if soup is to thick from standing.
Oat Flour
Place 1 to 1 1/2 cup Quaker Oats uncooked in a blender or food processor
Blend or process for about a minute.
Store in a container with a tight fitting lid, in a cool dry place up to 6 months.
Oat flour can be used for baking, breading, thickening or coating chicken.
* If you use it for baking, substitute up to but not more than 1/3 of the all purpose flour called for with oat flour.

Taste Temptin' Tuna Salad
3/4 cup Toasted Oats (recipe follows)
1 (7 oz) can Tuna in spring water, drained, flaked
1/2 cup sliced, chopped celery
1/2 cup miracle whip or favorite mayonnaise
1/4 cup VitaMite Lactose Free Milk
3 TBsp chopped onion
2 TBsp sweet pickle relish
Combine all ingredients, mixing well. Chill. Add additional mayonnaise before serving. Serve as a salad or a sandwich filling. * Variation : substitute 1 cup chopped cooked chicken or turkey for the tuna.
Toasted Oats
Place 2/3 cups Quaker oats uncooked, in an ungreased 15 1/2 x 10 1/2 jelly roll pan or equivalent sized cookie sheet with sides. Bake in a preheated moderate 350 oven, 15 to 20 minutes, stirring often till just golden. Be careful not to burn.

Old Fashioned Potato Soup
8 cubed potatoes(medium sized), peeled
4 cups 2 % VitaMite Milk or Rice Milk
1/4 tsp pepper
2 tsp salt
1/2 cup all purpose flour
1 TBsp non dairy margarine
1 well beaten egg
3 TBsp 2 % VitaMite Milk or Rice Milk
Boil potatoes in salt water, until tender. Drain; add 4 cups milk to potatoes and heat. Blend in 1/4 tsp pepper and 2 tsp salt. Cut margarine into flour with a pastry blender or fork. Blend well beaten egg and milk. Use only enough milk to make mixture thin enough to drop into hot soup. Drop one teaspoon at a time into the soup, cover and cook approx. 10 min. Makes dumplings. Serve soup hot.

Broccoli Quiche
1 (10") unbaked pastry shell
3/4 to 1 cup grated (combination) 3 slices American Organic tofu cheese and 6 oz. grated Mozzarella style Organic tofu cheese
6 beaten eggs
2 TBsp all purpose flour
2 tsp chicken flavor soup base bouillon
1 cup Rice milk or VitaMite 2% fat free milk
1/8 to 1/4 cup chopped onion
Preheat oven 425 bake shell 8 min.
Remove shell and reduce oven to 350
Mix cheese with flour and bouillon. Add remaining ingredients and mix well. Pour into shell.
Bake 40 to 50 minutes or till set. I insert a knife in the center, when it comes out clean, its done. Let stand 10 minutes before cutting up.

Banana Muffins
1/4 cup brown sugar, packed
1/4 cup chopped walnuts
1 tsp ground cinnamon
1 cup mashed bananas (2-3 medium)

1/2 cup sugar
3 tsp baking powder
1 tsp morton lite salt
1/3 cup chopped walnuts
Preheat oven 350 Grease bottoms only of 15 medium muffin cups or use papers..
Mix brown sugar, 1/4 cup nuts and cinnamon and set aside.
Beat bananas, oil, milk, vanilla and egg. Stir in remaining ingredients, except reserved mixture. Stir till moistened, will be lumpy. Divide batter evenly, sprinkle with streusel topping. Bake 20 minutes or till golden brown. Remove immediately from tins.

Is she picky too? That would be helpful to know. I have alot of good recipes. But we are not very picky...
