My brown sugar wasn't closed properly and now it is all hard! Is there any way to get it soft again?

even if you closed it it would have dried out dear. I never tried the bread thing or the clay disk thing, but I think I will because I had mine stored in an airtight container & it STILL dried out on me. I think Kim & Jennifer have the best advice

You can also put it in the microwave for about 20 sec, then take it out and see how soft it is. If it needs more just repeat. Worked for me. After that, I did put bread in with the container I use to store it.

Just in general, if you live somewhere humid, put something in with the sugar that will absorb the moisture. We used to put rice in our salt shakers to absorb the humidity. If you did that with the brown sugar you'd have to sift it out to use, but it would keep the moisture to the rice. Meg already mentioned bread, and that would help too. Just keep some in there with it and make sure to switch it every once in a while since bread will go bad!

put a slice of apple in it, or a slice of bread, or go get one of those little clay things, soak it in water and place in the container.

Yes. Use a sharp knife and break off only what you need at a time. Put it in a microwave safe container and microwave it for 30 seconds at a time, until it is soft. Or you can put it in a zip bag and place the bag in hot water for a while.
