This may be a stupid question but seriously I get 2 maybe 3 days of decent bananas and end up throwin out at least 3 black bananas out of every bunch I buy. Do I need to store them differently? I just keep them on the counter at room temp. I've tried those green bags and I have the green boxes too but they seem to just keep the outsides yellow while the insides stell get gross and mushy.

I don't know about having them last longer but once they have over-ripened, you can peel them and put them in the freezer to be used in muffins or banana bread or smoothies. That is better than throwing them out.

It's important to never store bananas with apples or tomatoes. They all three put off a gas that speeds up the ripening process, so they tend to go bad quicker.

I also use the green bags, but I do put them in the fridge after I've placed them in the green bag. I also only put them in the green bag once the bananas skin is yellow with a few brown speckles, never while skin is still green. I've found that leaving the open end of the green bags loose instead of tight works better too.

Also, here is a great website on freezing, grilling and cooking bananas http://www.frontporchlivingday2day.com/b... They also have some tips for using banana peels. Hope this all helps.

Louise.....so true, when I have some that are over ripe and am in the mood to bake (not often lol) I use them for banana cookies or i mash them into pancake mix...my kids love banana pancakes.... but I do often throw them out cuz I only get the urge to bake every once in a while.

You should also never throw out the black over ripe bananas...they are the best for banana cake and smoothies.

I'm sure you've all seen the commercials for the green bags. Get them, they really really work. I use them now on all of our fruits and veggies. They're around 10 dollars for a set of the reusable bags. My family used to waste MUCH more than 10 dollars a month on produce gone bad. Try them out you will LOVE them!

It is true about separating the bananas from the stalk, if you do this they will take longer to ripen, also, keep them wrapped tightly in the bag you buy them in, for some reason this seems to help as well.

I thought it sounded weird but it works. Put your bananas in the fridge they last way longer. Once mine hit the point of no return I freeze them in packages of threes for banana bread. But trust it does work to leave them in the fridge.

you can put bananas in the refrigerator and they will ripen slower, but the skin will turn black quicker, so they look bad. you can also freeze bananas and they last forever, just peel them first.

Buy your bananas when they are still a bit green. Also, seperate the bananas when you get home. I know it sounds funny, but it seriously does work. I also keep my bananas in the cupboard, which for some reason seems to keep them longer, but that might just be me. I hope that one of these helps, I know that we go through a lot of bananas here.
