Diet is a nasty dirty word especially in a childs life. You need to make lifestyle changes in your familys life. You are the parent... if you say we are going for a walk every night for 30 minutes.. then he is going for a walk every night for 30 minutes. If you say... this is NOT a resturant you are eating what I make or starving. He won't miss to many meals before he figures it out. Its your job as a parent to learn what healthy living is and live it, repersent it and enforce it in your familys life. And remember teach by example! I'm not trying to sound cold or forceful but sometimes it just takes a little less butt kissing and cuddling and a little more parenting to make a life changing difference in a childs life.

When my son was 11 we went on Weight Watchers together not only to learn a healthier way of eating, but to help him lose weight when the dr suggested it to help with his Asthma symptoms. Once I learned the system and applied it to our day to day routines, we made it a game...see who could come closest to thier points in a day without going over. I went to the meetings and brought the info home and taught it to him. In the course of 11 months, I lost 40 lbs and he lost 30 lbs. Now that he is out on his own, he has told me many times over that he applies what we learned together, all those years ago, to his daily routine. The thing we liked most about it was that we could eat pretty much whatever we wanted (in moderation) but had to account for everything we put into our mouths. Anything is worth a try, but you need to do it and stick with it :)

This can be really hard, because you want your son to be healthy but nagging him and restricting foods can actually lead to problems down the road. Your son will feel that he is messing up beacuase of his weight, and he might even start feeling out of control and crave foods more. I know, because my mom use to make me diet when I was little because she thought I was fat. Instead of a diet, make a plan to help him get more active and to help him change his eating habits.. My kids get tv time coupons for 6 hours a week. If he eats lunch at school, go over the menu with him and help him pick healthy choices. Don't limit food but instead, adjust what he eats. this website http://web.mit.edu/athletics/sportsmedic... can help you show him what healthy portions look like. Read labels with him and then show him a visual of how much sugar and sodium are in soda, chips, etc. (12 TBS of sugar in one 12 oz glass of soda and 4TBS in a single serving of regular potato chips) Put that in a clear cup and then ask him if he wants to eat it. Most importantly, get him involved in changing his diet. Get out your cookbooks or go to the library and let him get a kids cookbook. Rachael Rays 30 minute meals for kids is great. Let him select a meal, telling him it must have vegatables in it, and let him select a homemade dessert to serve. Take him shopping, let him help prepare the meal, serve it, etc. By involving him all aspects of what he is eating, you will finds that he feels more in control and less likely to overeat.

Kids learn habits... if you are watching a lot of TV then he will do the same. If he has a TV in his bedroom then I suggest you get rid of it and limit his TV time. Turn the stereo on instead and as far as the diet... it is also a learned thing. If you don't eat healthy food or the right portion then he is going to do the same.

I would suggest not giving less food just different stuff. Things that fill him up. Use whole grain things and make the choices of food he has healthier but don;t restrict it. Must be very difficult. So flavoured rice crackers instead of chips, make things like carrot and zucchini cake. There are some great recipes around for substitues.
