Does anyone know what food I could give my 6.5 month old to help her with her constipation. I know sugar water helps but I'd prefere not to use it as I don't want her to develope a sweet tooth and ruin her teeth whan they come up.

Try Invisible Fibre made by Solal! An awesome product, sorry I never found it sooner! 1t raisins soaked in boiling water & mashed up is also a good remedy. Even a little aloe juice mixed into food or added to drink. All natural & effective.

when my little one was that age (he's 10 months now) and i was first beginning to learn what does/doesn't work for him, i noticed that when i added rice/grain cereal to his fruit puree he wouldn't poop for a few days, and when he did it would be really hard. so i kept the rice cereal at slim to none because every time he ate it, the poor guy would become constipated. i allowed him to drink coconut water, and the hydration benefit immediately helped his poops go from hard to soft, and i was actually really surprised at the immediate effect. its not your typical well-known method, but it worked for us. oh yeah, and i was giving him about 1/8th of a teaspoon of certified organic certified non gmo flax oil every couple of days added to his yam puree. that stuff was good for us, but you have to be aware that it doesn't create an unwanted effect. i keep him on mostly a fruit and veggie diet, and at this point every other day for breakfast some organic probiotic yogurt (started slowly introducing at around 8ish months though) which also seems to work wonders for regulating daily soft poops. i've said this before on another thread, that the amazing thing about coconut water/oil is that it contains lauric acid (among many other beneficial nutrients as well). the only other place in nature besides human breast milk where this can be found is in the coconut products. anyways in my own experience, 95% fresh produce diet (cooked & raw) is the best way to maintain regular soft bowel movements.

Blueberry's are really good for constipation too. I mixed it a little with applesauce for the right consistency and it worked really well.

Bananas, fiber foods, a little Karo syrup in her formula, The sugar doesn't mess with their teeth as long as you give the child plenty of water and keep their mouth clean. also elctrolights such as pediacare help. My child has had this for a long time and these things worked for us.

Instead of just sugar water, have you tried Dark Karo syrup in her water or milk? I know that is still sugar but you should not need to use it that often. You might also see if she has a dairy issue causing the problem. There are many other milks you can get but be sure to ask your Dr. or an allergist. I would feed my daughter, when she was a baby the baby cereal but I always put some baby fruit mixed in it for her and she loved it! Blueberry buckle and Hawaii Delight were her favorites in her rice cereal. She also drank a lot of sweet potato/apple juice . You can also make your own or give her unsweetened apple sauce daily until it gets better. Just a few tsp. a day or mix it in her cereal also. Hope this helps.

Hello

Home made vege juice. Spinach, beetroot etc. Google recipes. They are great for the whole family. Look at what else you feeding baby as the body is reacting to solids you feeding baby. Introduce one solid at a time with the milk as thats the way you can find out what the body is reacting too. Check the milk. Lots of water needs to be given as well. Prune juice but not much.Boil them in water then mash them into a puree.

I bought my own food processor for my little one when she was a baby and got fresh produce from the farmers market. I used to mix broccoli with something sweet like an apple to give my daughter a fiber boost:)

As long as your baby is older than 4 months, then the first thing to try is diluted Apple Juice or Apple-Prune Juice. Buy whichever has the lowest sugar content (and it will still be less sugar than actual sugar-water) and just give her a tiny amount at a time and see if it helps/hurts. Apple Juice is good for constipation (bad for diarrhea) while Apple Pectin itself actually CAUSES constipation because pectin firms up the stools. (Meaning that giving babies apples and applesauce will actually make constipation worse, even though apple juice relieves it).

It's the fructose, Sorbitol, and natural sugars in Apple Juice that loosen stools up and it's a safe method for babies 4 months and up.

But in the meantime, you should consider what she's eating. The mere introduction of solid foods to children can induce constipation, but specifically avoid Bananas, Cereals, Pasta, Rice, Breads, and White Potatoes. Too much Dairy is also a big trigger (yogurt, cheese, and milk).

A diet too low in fiber is often the cause, as well. Add more barley or oatmeal cereals, prunes, peaches, plums, apricots and most vegetables are preferred when baby has constipation.

Also try warm baths (to relax muscles), doing bicycle legs with baby (exercise), and gently rub her belly in a counterclockwise motion. Anything that stimulates bowls without increasing her discomfort and "routine" is a safe move.

I use to mix cereal (baby) with small amounts of prune juice instead of water and then heat it up just a little. She loved it. It also helped her go.

Springboard Ready Set Go! was a great product to get them to go but I added a wholefood supplement Juice Plus which is all fruits and vegetables to my son's diet and it's the only thing that really relieved his contipation.

Thank you all for your interesting and helpful comments. My daughter who is 6 months and 2 weeks has had a hard time with bowel movements. Cried most times but she is petite too. Today due to the pushing got hemmorrhoids. I realized that she loves her morning rice cereal and loves rice mushed with veggies as a meal...therefore, after reading all these wonderful advices, I will cut back on the rice cereal and the rice that I add to her veggies....just to give her a break and give her some pear juice mixed with water...she is a big water drinker but I guess.... that doesn't do it for her....and then after a few days will give her mixed grains with maybe prune added or fruits. Thank you again. I never heard her cry this much. It was a first and not fun either!!!

whole milk yo baby yogurt. the pro biotics in the yogurt helped both of my kids with constipation. also make your own rice cereal out of brown rice just use a food processer till its like powder it's filled with fiber. you can do steel cut oats the same way. it's way better than the boxed baby cereals they have no fiber or nutrients. 2 to 4 oz of water will also help. I had the same problem with both of my kids & I hope these ideas help.

Prune baby food, let her have a few sips of water between meals and maybe some apple sauce. But before you do any of these things, please, please, please discuss it with your pediatrician!

my son had the same problem and i ended up taking him to the hospital. that was the only advise they gave me and i have used it every time i needed to. mix it into the bottle.
(only half teaspoon) and that will def. do the trick. good luck!

Are you giving her a lot of rice cereal? It used to give my son quite bad constipation and apparently it is quite common. If you are using a lot of rice cereal, give it a rest until things get back to normal and then only give it if it is mixed with fruit/vegetables. My Maternal & Child Health Nurse also suggested to stay off banana until things settled down as it can be binding in come kids as well. I soaked prunes in hot water and then either added the juice that came of to my son's food or pureed a little up and gave him some. At this age you should not really need to resort to laxatives. Good Luck

magnesium is great for constipation. avoid dairy (commercial) and bananas and grains as this aggravates it. If you are breat feeding you could take the magnesium yourself. Also I would cut those foods out for yourself also and see if that helps.
You would need to consult your doctor on the proper amount. If you give too much it will cause diarhhea, but that is all.

After introducing solids to my babies if they became constipated I would back off the solids a little for a few days and up the breastmilk and that usually would take care of it, you can also give her some pear juice (Gerber makes some) I've been told that it works really well like prunes but is far gentler on a baby's delicate digestive tract. Good luck!

Hello, I just wanted to let you know that pears are a natural laxative. They won't act like prunes and empty you all at once. Pears just do it more smoothly. I have a daughter that is 7 now and we are still dealling with it (due to her disability).

My daughter suffered from constipation. Some say 1/2 tsp of karo syrup in the formula or 1 oz organic apple or pear juice and 1 oz of water. Always dilute the juice for children. Hope she is feeling better. Baby 1st foods prunes is helpful and was her favorite but never really helped her with constipation. The juice was the ONLY thing that still helped.

Squeeze fresh orange juice, and you know what just a few minutes after some spoonful juice he'd go poop right away, even with the days old poop where baby was having a hard time getting it out. Proven and tested for so many times.

instead of sugar you can use lactosis (it´s a healthier form of sugar, and it´s normally contained in milk) and you can mix it into baby milk or tea... we have used also prune juice and apricot juice

I didn't even start to feed my children anything aside from breastmilk until they were at least 6 months old. How about giving her a break from solids until her digestive system can handle them better?

Baby fine milled oatmeal and rice cereals have added iron, so I personally cooked up plain old-fashioned rolled oats with water or milk. I mix in fruit purees such as prunes. My daughter loved the texture and flavor. If she needed extra loosening up, I would mix in extra water to make the oatmeal thinner. Just 1-1:30 min in the microwave would cook the oatmeal perfect. You just have to let it cool down and perhaps add more water because it thickens as it cools.

try prunes...just get the baby food prunes...you can even mix it into her cereal or in her bottle of juice or water. Give her lots of fruits...no bananas tho...bananas help when they have diarrhea though.

If you're nursing, it can be normal for b-fed babies to sometimes have only one bowel movement per week. Cereals that contain iron can cause constipation too. Pureed vegetables are a good idea too. I recommend you check with your pediatrician to rule out any other issues.

She's at the age now where you can start her on your own food. When my children were that age i used to save a little of the veg that I cooked for my husband and myself, not cooked in salt, let it cool and puree it. They loved it. Stewed apples are good for them aswell and mashed banana. When she starts teething try giving her carrot sticks, they're good for her and also help cut the gums to allow the teeth to come through because they are hard.

I hope this helps, my children are 17 and 13 now and it was a good base to start them eating fruit and veg.

You can offer her either apple juice, pear juice or grape juice, all in moderation, and if your worried about her teeth, try prunes, or applesauce. I used the prunes and mixed in another fruit, since they dont really taste good by themselves. Give those a try and see if it helps. Just with the juice, you need to give it to her in small amounts or she will end up with diareaha. Good luck.

Teeny bit of watered down kiwifruit juice works a treat too. We had the same problem with my son when he was just a wee babe. I know 'juice' will probably put you off, but if you get a good one all it really is is pureed kiwifruit.

Everyone tells you not to give them water, but it's okay in most situations to do it anyway. Just skip the sugar - she doesn't need it. I also made my own foods, but prunes were too much of a pain so I just bought them organic and they were her FAVORITE food for months! And they worked!

Have you ever seen those fruit nets you can put fresh fruit in? They are made by Munchkin. I got mine at Target. You can put fresh fruit and veggies in them, they suck and chew on it and don't get the chunks that they can choke on. I'm sure you can just google them as well.
