It was my experience, with both my son and daughter, that I had to completely take away the diapers. With my daughter, I had zero success getting her to use the potty. It was just a week or two before her third birthday when I told her "this is your last diaper... you have to starting going pee-pee and poo-poo in the potty". She said "oh, okay". We had a couple of accidents and that was it.
I will note that she woke up with a dry diaper every morning for a long period of time, so I knew her bladder was ready for potty training. I did buy a new pull up diaper that I called "special night time panties" but we only needed them for three nights.
Good luck!
