Slow cooker pulled pork...

I am looking for a pulled pork recipe that doesn't require a whole bottle of BBQ sauce as hubby and I find it too sickly sweet...

Has anyone tried with 1/2 BBQ sauce and 1/2 tomato sauce or another type?

Any and all input greatly appreciated!

I have gotten to where I don't use barbecue sauce when I make my pulled pork. I use more of a Carolina style recipe, but then you can put some barbecue sauce on the sandwich when you eat it so that you can regulate how much you use.

Here is the recipe I use:

For dry rub

* 3 tablespoons coarsely ground black pepper
* 3 tablespoons (packed) dark brown sugar
* 3 tablespoons paprika
* 2 tablespoons coarse salt
* 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper


* 2 untrimmed boneless pork shoulder halves (also known as Boston butt; about 6 pounds total)
**adjust as needed for your family, as well as preferred cut**

For mop (sauce in the slow cooker)

* 1 cup apple cider vinegar
* 1/2 cup water
* 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
* 1 tablespoon coarsely ground black pepper
* 1 tablespoon coarse salt
* 2 teaspoons vegetable oil

I also add onions while the meat is cooking. I had a small pork roast and a small beef roast in my freezer and had family coming over for dinner so I put both meats in the slow cooker with the above recipe and let them both cook together. It turned out really good and everyone had a choice of pulled beef or pulled pork. I used the two fork method for pulling it apart but left it in the slow cooker to stay juicy.

I also use a homemade barbecue sauce that really compliments the flavor of the pork, I rarely buy bottled sauce anymore.

My mom does half bbq sauce half salsa in the slow cooker with the pork.... she swears by it.

A friend of mine loves this recipe:

Ingredients for pulled pork
• 1 tbsp butter
• 2 pd boneless pork roast
• 1 tbsp cajun seasoning
• 1 medium onion, chopped
• 4 cloves garlic, crushed (or 2 tsp jarred crushed or minced garlic)
• 4 cups water
• 1 tbsp liquid smoke

Directions for pulled pork
1. Cut roast into large (2 inch square) chunks, season generously with cajun seasoning
2. Melt butter in large skillet and brown pork on all sides. Place pork in slow cooker.
3. Add onions and garlic to the skillet and cook until they are soft. Add the water and scrape up all the brown bits on the sides and bottom of the pan. Add the liquid smoke to the water.
4. Pour everything from the pan into the slow cooker on top of the pork.
5. Cook on high for 6 hours; low for 8 hours, or until pork falls apart when pierced and can be shredded easily with two forks.
6. Remove pork from slow cooker, shred with two forks and replace back into slow cooker to keep moist and warm.
