Both my daughters had umbilical hernias and the doctor told us to wait till about one year old, still had not healed so they surgically repaired them. It was day surgery only and a small smiley scar under belly button hardly noticeable.

Two of my sister's triplets had them and the doctors didn't do anything about it. Said it would go away. They both just have outie belly buttons now!

My 2 year old has one. I was also told it was no big deal that it should not cause a problem but to keep an eye on it. My oldest son had a hernia and it was fixed when he was 4. But this seems not to be a problem. My concern is when my 2 year old gets older and begins lifting weights and stuff is that going to be a weak area for him. I wonder if it is something that should be fixed now anyway.

My daughter had an umbilical hernia. Pediatrician said that this is quite common, but as she was my fourth baby, I had not seen this before. It protruded about an inch or so. It slowly started going down as she grew. By the time she was a year old, it was normal. She is now 10 and has never had any problems from it.

my son had an umbilical hernia and it went away on its own. from what i head it is pretty common. Just keep an eye on it. It looks funny and you will probably worry more about it that anything, and when you go for your check ups just keep having the doctor check it.

my son had an umbilical hernia, and the doctor said it was no big deal and that he would just grow out of it, which he did when he was about 5 months or so. You can still see it a bit, but not that bad. From what I was told, it basically just looks a bit different, like their bellly button is sticking out

my son had a hernia in his groin and had to be operated on as part of his bowell would slip into his scrotum numerous times a day and we had to put it back in! We had 3-4 months while we waited for diagnosis and a date for surgery where our poor little man was a ball of screaming fury most of the time dosed up on pain medication and very miserable :0( When the consultant examined him he said there possibly be one on the umbilical cord as well but that it would hopefully strengthen up and he would grow out of it in time but he would check up on it at the follow up appointment after surgery which is due in October! I believe the hernias on the umbilcal area are quite common, try a google search for more info :0)
