For my oldest daughter's first birthday I made her pancakes for the first time and drizzled syrup all over them, but then I decided that wasn't very memorable because we eat pancakes all the time. I now have a very special (beautiful) happy birthday plate that I now use at every b-day and she gets a huge cupcake (from Rao's Bakery...they really are huge) with a candle in it and I sing to her before she eats it. I figure that eating something that's not really healthy for you for breakfast one day out of the year won't hurt her. She loves it!

A savings bond! It is half the value to buy it and by time it matures it is double what you paid for it!! Can't go wrong on planning a furture for your child ever!!

We were thinking a new car seat. Since you can turn them around at one and 20 lbs.

I know someone who made choc muffins (with a little cocoa powder not real choc) and put grated carrot and zucchini in them to make them healthy. Sounds wierd but they turned out really well and the kids loved them.

If its a summer party I gave my daughter and grandson a sandbox turtle however I used it as their first pool. It was just the right size and if I didn't want to take them in the big pool they were just as happy playing in theirs. Plus it had the top to stop animals from going in it. I think I used it 2 or 3 years before I out sand in it.

This may sound a little strange, however I speak from experience, I would encourage all parents to start their children a college found. Our daughters just graduated and are DEEP IN DEPT. Both girls went to small Universities in other states than where we live so their tuition was higher than if they had been residents of that state. You could put a few board books to go with the monetary gift.

If you are talking about food for a first birthday i suggest you make a carrot cake with a cream cheese icing. Very yummy! and fairly healthy

And other foods that would include lots of vegies and fruit.

Also find some recipes that have pureed veg & fruit in them as they wont even tell they are being healthy. I have some of these recipes but have not written them online yet sorry.

And as for gifts you can never go wrong with more clothes!!

I honestly have to say that I don't think we gave my son a birthday present on his first birthday. He was getting so many presents from everyone else, that I thought he didn't need it and wouldn't miss it. His birthday is the end of December, so he also just had so many Chanukah presents too. We were also throwing the party. However, when he was born, he got a book that spells out his name and starting at age 3, and he is 3.5 now, he loves it. It is from I see me and I believe the website is www.iseeme.com and that is a memorable gift your child will always have. It is a gift I actually like to give to newborns or for first birthdays now. Whatever you decide, enjoy and happy birthday!

I agree that the 1st birthday gift is of little importance. However, a great gift for a one year old is a little car-type thingy that they can push themselves around on.

honestly, you could spend a million bucks on a gift and they will just play with the box!!! I went to the mall and had a special book with my son as the main character (you could make one yourself too!) and at 19 months, this is his fav book ever! He wants to read it all day and it is always the last book before bed!

we thought that for our firsts we are going to get them something memorable cause they dont really know whats going on. we are going to buy them a star or a tree or something like that that you get a certificate for and they keep forever.
