My children's pediatrician recently told me that redheads have weak immune systems.

I have never heard of this before i myself was never sick as a child and my oldest redhead NEVER gets sick but my youngest girl catches everything. I would love to hear everyone opinion over this

I am a redhead (actually auburn red) talk about RARE. Red runs in the women of the family. From my maternal grandmother, mother, to my sister and I. My mother and I have had more illnesses individually than my sister and grandmother combined.

At 3 I was diagnosed with Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis (JRA) the pain and stiffness in my hands continued until my late teens. The only other 2 I have ever met that had JRA were also red heads. At 12 I had pneumonia, and the Shingles (at that time I was told I would not have it again), not sure which came first. I had my second bout of Shingles at 40. I am now 43 and getting over Shingles bout #5.

Learning more about the Shingles than anyone outside the medical field should know, I have had the breakout along multiple root nerves pointing to having a lower immune system. Easily ruling out the possibility of HIV, I told the Dr. about the JRA and that explained it enough for him not to be concerned.

Now I feel really special ;)

Hi, I am a redhead. I have always been strong as an ox with what seemed like a strong immune system...until recently. But I don't believe that being a redhead has a thing to do with my current issues. Rather, stress, the typical american diet, and being a former chain smoker (smoking by the by supressess the immunue system)

My opinion, since that's all I can claim to be qualified to give) is that external things like diet, stress, etc contribute to a run down immune system.

I have candida now. It's going to take a llllong time to recover, but I look at it this way. It's reversable.

No weak immune for this redhead. I crashed my system with abuse. I suppose that's good news for you, OP!

Have a great 2011!

Something else I heard from a doctor is that Red Heads tend to have higher intelligence (spell check please :P.
it is based on the theory of copper or somthing to that fact in our bodies I may not be remembering that correctly but im pretty sure it was copper.
As you can tell by my spelling and lack of memory in trying to recall shows
that I have missed the boat on this one....hee hee...
anyway, my two nephews are almost genius, my mother is one of the most intelligent women I know despite the fact she only went to the 8th grade, and believe it or not I have tested extremely high on testing. I tested much higher than my education level.
I wish I had asked him where this study was but I didnt and it was a long time ago
I dont go to him anymore.
Whatever the case I do think Redheads just like any other group respond physicaly based on our genetics, for example we tend to sunburn easily, It seems that every ethnic group has certain tendencys.
though obviously there are exceptions to every rule.

I don't really see what hair color has to do with immune systems..kind of an odd thing for a doctor to say really

its nonsense, its the same myths all the time. I kept being told redheads bleed a lot in labour and my mum, who delivered my baby, said she had never seen such a low bloodloss in nearly 30 years of being a midwife. Prejudices like that get in the way of diagnosing actual problems so you should tell your doctor where to go as they are obviously rather thick.

I have heard that a lot. I am a redhead and I have been sick off and on since I was 2 months old. Mind you once I got pregnant, my immune system got a boost. I used to get sick all the time. However I don't believe that hair colour affects how sick you will be in life.

hhmmmm I dont no I have had a week immune system my entire life I have darker red hair, but my mom and brother who are more strawberry blond are strong as ox's.

you should ask the doctor where he saw the study about that subject that you would like to read more about it.

I've never heard that, although I have heard that fair-skinned, blonde and blue eyes are more prone to certain things like asthma/allergies. It's possible that's true of redheads as well. I think redheads are more prone to skin cancer!
