Ditch the doll? Lawmaker out to outlaw Barbie

West Virginia state delegate says iconic toy overemphasizes beauty to girls

Barbie could get an unwelcome present for her 50th birthday: outlawed in West Virginia.

A state lawmaker proposed a bill Tuesday to ban sales of the iconic Mattel doll and others like her.

The Barbie Ban Bill, proposed by Democratic Delegate Jeff Eldridge (D) Lincoln County, says such toys influence girls to place too much importance on physical beauty, at the expense of their intellectual and emotional development.

"I just hate the image that we give to our kids that if you’re beautiful, you’re beautiful and you don’t have to be smart," Eldridge told West Virginia news station WOWK.

The delegate concedes that the chances of getting the bill passed are slim, but adds that he stands behind it.

"I knew a lot of people were going to joke about it and poke fun at me," Eldridge said. "I couldn’t get anybody to sign on the bill with me but I said I’m still going to introduce it."

A Mattel spokeswoman did not immediately respond to a request for comment Tuesday. The Barbie doll officially turns 50 on March 9, and the toy maker has made big plans this year to mark the anniversary.

Barbie has had her foes over that half-century. Critics say the doll promotes materialism and an unnatural body image.

The bill has been sent to the House Judiciary Committee.

Quoting Katherine:

I hate Bratz too! It's funny because when the Sears catalogue came a couple of years ago at Christmas, I passed over the Bratz page and said "Yuck" in front of my daughter. (They look like hookers) Now, she calls them "yucks" she doesn't even know the real name! She told me that at school some of the girls have backpacks with "yucks" on them! I asked her if she actually called them that in front of the other girls, and she said of course "that's what they're called, isn't it!" I agree, the problem isn't Barbie! It's society in general, starting with the Hollywood idols that everyone worships. You know, they actually made dolls of the Obama girls!

That is too cute!  That actually made me LOL, hehe.  Your daughter is very bright!

My daughter played with Barbie and Bratz. She does not dress like Bratz now (she's 11) nor does she expect to be built like Barbie. In fact, she pretty much dresses like I do. Could it be because I am her role model and not some toy? Gee, who'da thunk it? I don't understand why these government officials/politicians want to control what is on our store shelves and what we buy! This is America and we have a choice!

I think that comes to the parents, I would NEVER buy my daughter something called Bratz. Who buys this crap for their children? Since when is it "cool" to be a brat?

I'd have to say that the bad roll model here is the Democrat himself.

I don't think Barbie is the problem, maybe partly, but come on all they have to do is turn on the TV/Movie everybody is unnaturally skinny. There are very few "normal" sized women anywhere on TV. Not in programs, news casts, etc. If he wants to change childrens perception of beauty he should outlaw Hollywood. Here there's an idea, lets just cut CA off and send them out to see. Then all, well most, of our problems would be solved. :-)

I don't know about anyone else, but my Barbies never stayed "beautiful" for long.  My sisters and I cut their hair, drew on them with pens and markers and played with them until the "bones" came out the bottom of their feet.  I can't recall ever comparing myself - or anyone else - to a Barbie doll.  Like every other little girl (I assume), I just got caught up in the pretend world we created in "playing Barbies."  I doubt this West Virginia lawmaker's opinion has anything to do with his being a Democrat;  more likely it has to do with the fact that he's flaming idiot.

Um then they better go GUT Disney Channel from top to bottom! Hannah, iCarly, Wizards of Waverly....where would they stop? What about High School Musical? What rug did this hillbilly crawl out from under?

They're so controlling....now they want to control what toys our kids play with. You're right Lindsay when you say that if they have self esteem problems it's not from a toy, but from their parents. What would they like a barbie to be fat and look like a boy. Atleast having a doll like barbie might help kids want to look good when they grow up.

I can think of many more things more damaging to a girls self esteem than a doll. Like all those magazines.. some showing not fat people talking about diets, the obsession with makeup, and all the commercials on t.v. with people selling products through sex... if he really wanted to oppose something he should look at those things before a doll..
i mean first.. they make Barbie break up with Ken.. and give her a sister who could easily be her own daughter.. it's just sick how far the rabbit hole goes.

This guy is an idiot. Clearly he’s never actually looked at barbie dolls nowdays. There is a barbie for every different job. Lawyer, dr, vet you can’t be stupid and do all those things. It shows girls that they can be anything they want if you really want to get all deep about a toy.

Im so sick of democrats punishing companies that are doing well and im sick of them making children pansies. It’s a fricking toy stop overthinking it.

If girls have low self esteem from a doll their parents are to blame for not raising them with self esteem in the first place in my opinion.

It also annoys me that he is wasting time introducing a bill like this when he admits himself it won’t pass. Like there aren’t any other issues in this country that need their attention.
