Napolitano stands by 'extremism' report

By Audrey Hudson, Thursday, April 16, 2009
http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2009...

Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano said she was briefed before the release of a controversial intelligence assessment and that she stands by the report sent to law enforcement that lists veterans as a terrorist risk to the U.S. and defines "rightwing extremism" as including groups opposed to abortion and immigration.

The outcry resulted in a demand from the head of the American Legion to meet with Ms. Napolitano, a request the DHS chief said she would honor next week when she returns to Washington from her current tour of the U.S.-Mexican border.

"The document on right-wing extremism sent last week by this department´s Office of Intelligence and Analysis is one in an ongoing series of assessments to provide situational awareness to state, local and tribal law enforcement agencies on the phenomenon and trends of violent radicalization in the United States," Ms. Napolitano said in a statement.

• Click here to download a PDF of the report.

"I was briefed on the general topic, which is one that struck a nerve as someone personally involved in the Timothy McVeigh prosecution," Ms. Napolitano said.

"Let me be very clear: we monitor the risks of violent extremism taking root here in the United States. We don´t have the luxury of focusing our efforts on one group; we must protect the country from terrorism whether foreign or homegrown, and regardless of the ideology that motivates its violence," Ms. Napolitano said.

"We are on the lookout for criminal and terrorist activity but we do not — nor will we ever — monitor ideology or political beliefs. We take seriously our responsibility to protect the civil rights and liberties of the American people, including subjecting our activities to rigorous oversight from numerous internal and external sources," Ms. Napolitano said.

The nine-page document titled "Rightwing Extremism: Current Economic and Political Climate Fueling Resurgence in Radicalization and Recruitment," has caused an outcry from veterans groups, Republican lawmakers and conservative activists.

"Rightwing extremism," the report defines in a footnote on Page 2, goes beyond religious and racial hate groups and extends to "those that are mainly antigovernment, rejecting federal authority in favor of state or local authority, or rejecting government authority entirely."

"It may include groups and individuals that are dedicated to a single issue, such as opposition to abortion or immigration," said the report, which also listed as suspect gun owners and veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars.

The American Legion on Tuesday criticized the report as unfairly stereotyping veterans.

"I am aware of the letter from American Legion National Commander (David) Rehbein, and my staff has already contacted him to set up a meeting next week once I return from travel. I will tell him face-to-face that we honor veterans at DHS and employ thousands across the department, up to and including the Deputy Secretary," Ms. Napolitano said.

"As the department responsible for protecting the homeland, DHS will continue to work with its state and local partners to prevent and protect against the potential threat to the United States associated with any rise in violent extremist activity," Ms. Napolitano said.

Ha ha! I guess I am a terrorist as well. I was at book club the other day and made mention of what my hubby got me for mother's day..a Smith and Wesson .38 special, and before we knew it we had formed a gun club! Yeah, every month we are going to get together and practice shooting...us and our whole families! Our hubbies are pretty keen on the idea too since they won't be 'left out' as usual..lol Guess I will have a target on my head if Napolitano ever finds out...lol! 2nd Amendment forever!

All I can say is that I was called a terrorist today! I was trying to share the Good news of our Lord and meerly quoting scripture about the Lord's view on homosexuality. The last thing I said was let's just agree to disagree and peace be with you and God bless...and that everything I do is in the name of my Father! I never said anything hateful. The next thing I knew this liberal former friend of mine as of today decides to compare my passion for Christ to the terrorsits on 9-11!!!! I was so taken aback, appalled, hurt...after debating for several days on the hate crime bill and homosexuality I decided to hang up the towel and delete her. I cannot sit back and let people call me a terrorist for wanting to uphold the constitution and the Bible.

P.S. If anyone has any advice on how to argue with a liberal and win...please let me know!

Well I was listening to 96.9 Wtkk and I believe she was Senator-- Something Brown, I can't think of her name, but anyways acording to her we are all Racist the only reason why we didn't vote for Obama is because he is black, No Republican / Conservatives want a black Man in the White House, Gee thats funny I would not mind a Black man in the White House just not that Black Man which by the way he is half White but they never mention that. I don't like Obama , I don't trust him. I wasn't Brainwashed to what he was saying. Also she said that we were having these Tea Parties and we don't even know what the Tea Party stands for. Um yes that is one of the very many things I learnt in History, My Anchestor Fought in the Revolutionary War so I kept right up with that. According to her also we have something in are brains that block the area that supposably make them so intelligent-- If thats the case I wouldn't want to be intellagent if I have to think like them. So I guess I can be called a terrorist as well.

I would have loved to see Condoleeza Rice or Ken Blackwell (former attorney general in Ohio) as our president. Ms. Rice is the most intelligent, decent person in Washington right now.  Ken Blackwell was strong man with integrity.
Also, I think that those who made comments about the tea parties are the ones who don't know their history. Taxation without representation, which is exactly what's going on right now.

Even Colan Powell would have been good I beieve

I am only antigovernment when the government is anti-ME. I certainly won't shoot the place up, but that doesn't mean I won't voice my opinion and stop writing my state representatives.

My grandmother, who hasn't held a gun in her life has asked my father to teach her how to shoot. Why? Because she sees this country falling to pieces and she's scared that when the poop hits the fan, it's going to be all she can do to protect herself and her property. DO they consider THAT a threat? Is my GRANDMOTHER, who knits and crochets, and sends my babies sweaters for their birthdays now at risk for being blacklisted as a "rightwing extremist"?

I'm sorry. I'm ranting. I know that I certainly don't know much about the workings of government, and I have a habit of taking things at face value.

Can I join the club? I like the idea of hats and t-shirts... granted I can't wear them since dh is a contractor for the government. Government employees can have Obama stickers all over them but contractors aren't allowed to display their political affiliation, unless of course if it's for Obama. A group of Republican contractors got their hands slapped for wearing McCain buttons to work while the Obama-ites could wear theirs all bloody day!

THAT IS ILLEGAL!!! Freedom of speech is for EVERYONE! Not just the mindless drones who follow the big ZER"O". I heard my local talk radio say isn't it funny we can't torture KNOWN criminals, BUT they can fly a plane into a city to traumatize our citizens all for the sake of a damn photo-op. IF I were a 9/11 survivor of the financial district I'd kick em where it hurts and file a CLASS action law suit for harassment and mental distress! His budget would collapse because he'd have to pay out billions in claims! What an oblivious egomaniac this man is. I shack my head in shame......what must the world think of when they read such stories?

My husband said that this stunt cost us over $300k.  And now they can't even use the pics, because it will make everyone mad.  What a waste!

I really think it's an excuse to control our rights as Americans. It's scary. What I don't understand is that they want to close down Guantanemo Bay because "torture is dispicable", but they support abortion rights. Does this make any sense to anyone?!

I watched a video clip of the "celebration" of Obama's 100 First Days in office, and he was actually mocking the people who participated in the Tea Bag protest. Did he not know that it wasn't just us conservative republicans he was mocking? It was republicans AND democrats. It was American citizens. What scares me the most, is that he doesn't take it seriously.

We are having our freedoms stripped away. Soon, we won't be able to homeschool because it will "undermine the public school system". We won't be able to bear arms because it is considered terrorism. We will be prisoners in a country that was founded on freedom and the pursuit of happiness.

I can understand how you feel. My husband works for a defense contractor. He and his co-workers keep having to go through special training because someone usually voices his/her opinion that offends someone and gets reported to HR for the offense.

I think that these days anyone who states there opinion is called a terrorist. I mean in this day and age, if you wear a headscarf then you are also a terrorist. this is what the world has come to.

And he's still being paid to teach communism in our colleges & universities. It's sickening.

This amazes and horrifies me. I am a 29 y/o Republican SAHM with three small children. I am a member of several Republican and Pro-Life organizations and networks. That makes me a domestic terrorist? Really? What a scary precedent this is setting. Who are they going to target next after veterans and christians?

It's a crime to try to uphold the consitution and love this nation when we have both houses and a president of the Democrat ilk. It's only going to get worse ladies...they will take out talk radio, push harder for speech codes; imagine Prop 8 lash back but worse I can see the radical lefties really becoming completely smarmy in the next few years. oy, we seriously are in trouble!

How scary is this when you stand up for your country and God and they come after you. I feel like a chapter from the "Left Behind" books has become reality.. When good people stand up for their country and expect that country to stand behind the principals of the Constitution when does this become a crime?
