Hi ladies. This is my first time using circle of moms. I am 26 with two boys, Gabe who just turned 6 and Noah who is about to turn 5. We had our 6 yo (he was 5 at the time of the election) watch the presidential debates and election coverage so he would be aware of how our government selects its leader. It worked well, as we were driving to soccer practice one Saturday in October and he saw a billboard with John McCain on it (my hubbs and I hadn't even seen it until he mentioned it) and says "hey, there's John McCain that man we are going to vote for to be our next President after President Bush!" I was SO proud! He was also aware of President Obama when he was running. I would ask him why we were not sure about voting for him, and he would say "he believes in some things that we don't believe in...but so does John McCain...John McCain just has a smaller list (of things we don't believe in) than Baraak Obama does."

My question to you is...how many of you had young children involved in this historical election? What were their takes on all of it? Do they now know that they lived history in the making?

Quoting Kelly:

In our conservative house, I was quite shocked that my 2 year old recognized only Obama's picture and voice.  Any campaign ad, radio ad etc. she would say "That's  Barack Obama!" I am not sure if this confims that he is the Anti-Christ or if he just had more ads than McCain.  I don't want to see him fail, because that screws all of us, but his first 30 days were not impressive or re-assuring. Anyone else scared to death of what this is doing not only to us but to our children and grandchildren? What is in that KoolAid?????

My 2 year old pointed to the letter "O" today and said "Obama!"  GOOD GRIEF!!  Where he got that association, I do not know because we surely don't have any Obama propoganda laying around the house!

Weird! Laynette, my son who just turned four on Jan. 20th did the same thing! We turned on the news the night Obama won to see and hear a group in Chicago chanting O-ba-ma! Charles, my son, began running in circles chanting the same thing! It was actually kind of scary! He did this for weeks! We just laugh about it and taught him to say John McCain as well!

I knew that I maybe had gotten a little over the top watching Fox News and listening to 3 conservative radio stations, when one all in one day I had visited with my 2nd grader and who he was voting for in the election and why-(he said because Obama will take away our guns), the first grader chiming in about killing unborn babies and ending the day while watching O'Reilly-my 4 year old chanting Barrack Obama.  I guess the name was a neat rhythm for him to say.  At least it sounded like my kids teachers were leaning the right way and trying not to be too vocal on their feelings on the subject.  It also hit home when my 2nd grader checked out a kids website that had been conducting a vote and he exclaimed "Oh Man Obama won."    He also stated just the other day "So when is Obama going to come take away our guns?", so I told him that he wasn't going to come in person to take them away but find other ways like passing laws to make it hard to be able to use them....

All my kids were disappointed in the outcome and didn't want to be a part of the historical part of this but I tried to reinforce to them that they needed to remember this year because they were living history.   Someday they will have to make decisions with their voting based on what is happening this year.

My daughter at the time was in second grade and had a very liberal teacher. She pushed her views on her students and my daughter for a while wanted Obama to win. She didn't understand why mommy and daddy didn't like him so I had to sit her down and explain to her. That Obama and Biden didn't believe in a lot of the things we do and even tho McCain didn't believe everything we do he had a lot more in common with our beliefs. My mom and mother in law also had talks with her explaining why they were voting for McCain. She is a very smart child and now she fully understands and voted for McCain in her school mock election too. We are so proud of her for not listening to the majority and listening to her own ideas and morals.

HI! I'm new here too. I'm in a little different situation because I live in a relatively conservative state, and I don't socialize too much with people who don't think like me. ON FB, though, I have reconnected with friends from college. I was a music student, so you can imagine where their political loyalties lie. But we haven't gotten into an political discussions. Everyone seems to be sensible enough to stick to the things we have in common. Thankfully I had a boyfriend in grad school who was conservative and we watched and listened to Rush (yes this was at the time that he had a tv show), so I got kind of grounded and didn't get the "head full of mush" that he talks about. Anyway, as far as this election goes, my kids came home from school trying to talk about Obama positively and I told them I didn't like him. When they asked why, I explained to them (as well as you can explain to a 7 and 5 year old) what it was about his policies that didn't agree with our system of values (BTW we are Catholic, and not fake ones like the Kennedys or Biden LOL!). Well about a week later my son came home and told me that he had voted for McCain in the school election and actually got into an argument about it with one of his friends. And my daughter told her teacher that Obama was bad because he "kills babies". I tried to explain to her that he doesn't actually do it but he enacts laws to enable it and that's just as bad. I guess you just have to work with their level of understanding.

We will just say that my 13 yr old son is furious he has this massive debt already hanging over his head and he hasn't even worked his first job!

I had been aware of some ideas being forced upon my kids about Obama as well.  We live in a red state and it was surprising how much headache they got from kids at school when they said they would have voted for McCain - the lesser of the two evils.  My candidate was Mitt Romney.  We could sure use his business sense now!  Because of all that has gone on in the schools here, I am taking my kids out of traditional school and enrolling them in the vitual academy and high school for the state.  Some teachers are in the tank with Obama, and I don't think they should be able to penalize our kids for thinking differently and upholding moral values.  Isn't that what teaching is supposed to do?  Teach our kids to think???  Sheesh!

Well my 14 year old autistic son proclaimed to his history class that he could not vote for a liar, so he could not vote for Obama, hehe. When we were trick or treating at Halloween, he told my daughter to skip the houses with Obama signs. He looked at this election like it was a ball game or something, hehe. He is very competitive in that way. We had to explain to him that there are people that believe in things that we don't as well as others that do. My daughter saw through all of Obama's lies as well. Her elementary school is very blue collar so she was only one of a few that voted McCain in her class mock election. She is only 11 and already gets it.

I had my 13 year old (12 at the time) and 7 year old (6 at the time) watch the debates with me.

I have to tell you, I was picking up on some hard core indoctrination from my kids, both said they wanted Obama to win. When questioned as to why, my daughter - the younger one said "because he's black" and my son said "because it's time for the people who have everything to quit standing in the way of the people who have nothing"

I was shocked, well not by my son's response, that is the general position at his dad's house...but we did explain to him how the statement he gave made absolutely no sense. My daughter's opinion originated at school......
