Hi

Are there any other NZ mums on here who have signed up for the Auckland Marathon in November?

I'm starting my 16 week schedule on Monday and it would be great to communicate with other mums throughout the training.

This will be my 8th Marathon but my first since giving birth in Feb so I'm really not sure how it's gonna go. My PB is 4hrs but am expecting to do around 5.5hrs this time as I don't have the same time to commit to training and am starting from the most unfit I've ever been.

If you're just starting your program for Auckland (or any other marathon around the same time) let me know how you're going.

Hi Karen,

Congratulations on your marathon! So sorry that it was so painful and that you now have an injury!! I've been in your shoes, so I know you're dying to get back running again. Take your time and enjoy PT.

When you're ready, try mixing up your training with biking and/or swimming or something else you may enjoy. I recently learned (after my physical therapist told me I needed more cross training) that I love spinning classes and swimming (WHO KNEW?!). Maybe you will too.

Hope recovery goes fast and smoothly for you!

Best, Sarah

Hi Sarah

It went pretty well thanks. I did 5hrs 5mins and at one point thought I might even sneak in under 5hrs so better than I was expecting. That's the good news. The bad news was that it was the most painful marathon I've ever done and I really would not recommend anyone try it with so little training. I walked the majority of the last 10km and was hurting real bad for most of the 2nd half.

I'm really pleased with my efforts & feel like I took a big step towards getting back to 'normal' even if I didn't quite get there in time.

Since the Marathon I continued training and was making good progress until a coastal running accident put me on crutches for the last month! Am heading right back to square 1 now, another few weeks of crutches to look forward to then 3 - 6 months of physio to get my knee good enough for marathon running again. Oh and, of course, I put back on all the baby weight I lost once already! Aaaarrrrgghhhh!!!!!

All part of life's roller coaster ride I guess .......... : )

Hey Karen,

I haven't been on this board in a long time! How was the Auckland Marathon? How did you do?

For Christmas my hubby gave me the book, "4 Months to a 4-Hour Marathon" by David Kuehlos. It's an easy read and has some great tips.

Best, Sarah

Hi

Well, 16weeks went pretty quick and the Auckland Marathon is on Sunday. The training has been really up and down, some good weeks followed by some terrible weeks when I've only hit the road once.

I'm still at least 4kg (9lbs) heavier than my ideal running weight and am running 11min miles rather than my usual 8min miles so I am far from back to 'normal'.

Still hoping for a 5.5hr finish but will be pleased to make it to the end in any time to be honest.

Wish me luck, I think I'm gonna need it!
